ERIK NIEMI STØCKLER DOMESTICATED SCULPTURE
This sculpture was an investigation of the process, and experimentation of different methods and techniques. The concept was to create an object that not only appeals to the visual sense, but to allow the viewer to interact and manipulate the object physically. Through the process of milling and hand-sawing white oak veneers, I was able to bent laminate forms using a vacuum press, and then make contained cuts on the table saw. This process created an object that is very strong as a single entity, but gives the strands the ability to compress and expand when sliding the carved medallions up and down the board. The medallions open and close portions of the strands to give the user the ability to change the amount of light passing through the body of the sculpture.
