RIVER MARKET DEVELOPMENT KANSAS CITY MISSOURI URBAN DESIGN IS AN INTEGRAL PART INTO INTRODUCING NEW BUILDINGS AND DEVELOPMENTS INTO AN URBAN FABRIC THAT ALREADY EXISTS. THIS STUDIO FOCUSED ON THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE RIVER MARKET AREA, WHICH IS IN THE HEART OF KANSAS CITY. FIRST A LARGE, CITY WIDE INVESTIGATION WAS NECESSARY TO BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE CITY FUNCTIONS AS A WHOLE. MOVING INTO SMALLER AND SMALLER SCALES, GIVES THE ABILITY TO IDENTIFY WHAT FACTORS ARE IMPORTANT TO OUR PROPOSED SITE. DESIGNING BUILDINGS THAT INVITE THE CITY CENTER TOWARDS THE RIVER WAS THE MAIN CONCERN FOR THE PROJECT. RIVERS, BODIES OF WATER, ARE THE BIRTH PLACES OF LARGE CITIES AND CIVILIZATIONS. CELEBRATING THE MEETING OF THE KANSAS AND MISSOURI RIVER, HIGHLIGHTS THE HISTORY OF HOW THE CITY WAS FOUNDED, AS WELL AS BRINGS THE CITY BACK TO ITS ROOTS.

LOCATION | AREA ANALYSIS GREATER KANSAS CITY

KANSAS CITY IS BROKEN APART INTO MANY DIFFERENT AREAS, VARYING HIGHLY IN DEVELOPMENT AND THEIR IMPACT TO THE CITY. SURROUNDING THE CORE OF DOWNTOWN, ARE MANY HIGHWAY SYSTEMS THAT INHIBIT THE ABILITY FOR FLUID PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC. THE RIVER MARKET IS ON THE NORTHERN END OF KANSAS CITY. TRADITIONALLY THE PORT AND MAIN HUB OF TRANSPORTATION INTO THE CITY, AS URBAN SPRAWL HAPPENED TOWARDS THE SOUTH OF THE CITY, THE RIVER MARKET BEGAN TO BECOME RUN DOWN AND UNDER-UTILIZED. SLOWLY IN THE PAST THIRTY YEARS, THERE HAS BEEN A RESURGENCE OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS AND ARTIST REHABILITATING THE OLD WAREHOUSES AND FACTORY BUILDINGS. THIS SHOWS MAJOR PROMISE FOR DEVELOPMENT TO START TO HAPPEN IN THE AREA. THE MAIN DATUM OF DOWNTOWN, IS MAIN STREET, WHICH TURNS INTO DELAWARE AS IT CROSSES INTO THE RIVER MARKET.

BUILT FORM BUILDING FOOTPRINTS CITY | RIVER CHANGE NATURAL TOPOGRAPHY

THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT PLAY A ROLE INTO THE DESIGN OF THE NEW DEVELOPMENT. BREAKING DOWN DIFFERENT CONTEXTUAL GRIDS GIVES ORDER AND MEANING TO THE PLACEMENT OF BUILDINGS AND COMMUNITY AREAS. IDENTIFYING WHERE THE HIGHEST DENSITY OF PEOPLE LIVE SHOWS WHERE TO INTRODUCE OPEN GATHERING SPACES AND PLACING THESE SPACES AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS ON THE GRIDS GIVES THEM VIEWS AND AREAS OF INTERACTION WITH THE CITY AND LANDSCAPE. CONNECTING THESE OPEN AREAS WITH THE ENVIRONMENT GIVES ACCESS TO ONE OF THE ONLY PARKS IN DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY, CREATING A NEW ENTRANCE TO THE RIVER. BEING CLOSE TO RIVER ALSO HAS MANY TOPOGRAPHICAL DIFFICULTIES.THE NATURAL TOPOGRAPHY OF THE LAND DROPS 150 FEET FROM THE RIVER MARKET TO THE ACTUAL RIVER. EMBRACING THESE GRADE CHANGES CREATES OPPORTUNITIES TO INTRODUCE MORE ORGANIC/SCULPTURAL FORMS INTO THIS LANDSCAPE. THE FORMS CURVE AND ORIENT THEMSELVES WITH BOTH THE URBAN CONTEXT AND ITS ENVIRONMENT. PEDESTRIANS NOW MOVE SEAMLESSLY FROM THE CITY TO NATURE.

THE INDIVIDUAL BUILDING THAT WAS DEVELOPED, WAS A COLLABORATIVE SPACE WITH THE KANSAS CITY ARTIST COALITION. THIS GAVE THE LOCAL ARTISTS LARGER WORKSPACES, A MORE VERSATILE GALLERY DISPLAY, AND THE ABILITY TO HAVE AN INTERACTION WITH THE COMMUNITY. THE GALLERIES ARE MEANT TO HOLD IMPERMANENT WORK THAT CHANGES FREQUENTLY WITH THE ARTISTS DISCRETION. ALLOWING THE PUBLIC TO MOVE THROUGH THE SPACE FREELY GIVES THE ARTISTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH MANY INDIVIDUALS AND EXPLAIN THEIR INSIDE PERSPECTIVE ON THEIR WORKS WHILE RECEIVING OUTSIDE INPUT, THROUGH OPEN STUDIOS (WITH INCOMPLETE WORKS) AND FINAL GALLERY DISPLAYS. THIS IS A VITAL COMPONENT FOR PROGRESSION AND GROWTH FOR THE ARTIST AS WELL AS THE ART COMMUNITY THAT IS LARGELY PRESENT KANSAS CITY. CAFE ATRIUM | FACING SOUTH

FURNITURE STUDIO LAWRENCE KANSAS FURNITURE BUILDING IS ESSENTIALLY PRACTICING HUMAN SCALED ARCHITECTURE. THIS STUDIO TOOK US THROUGH THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF GOING TO A LUMBER YARD TO PICK OUT ROUGH SAWN LUMBER, MILL EVERYTHING OURSELVES, WHILE USING PRODOMENTLY HAND TOOLS AND WOOD JOINERY TECHNIQUES TO CREATE FUNCTIONING OBJECTS. WE WERE GIVEN TWO PROJECTS FOR THE SEMESTER, A STOOL AND A COFFEE TABLE. CLEAN MID-CENTURY MODERN FORMS ARE MY DESIGN INSPIRATION. UTILIZING SPLINED MORTISE AND TENONS AS WELL AS LAP JOINTS, I WAS ABLE TO CONSTRUCT A FOUR LEGGED STOOL OUT OF PECAN. WANTING TO KEEP A COHESIVE APPEARANCE AND DESIGN, MY TABLE USED A SIMILAR LANGUAGE. FOCUSING ON SMALL DETAILS AND SUBTLETIES THEN BECAME MY FOCUS. MAKING DOWELED LAP JOINTS, BISCUIT JOINTS AND LARGE MORTISE AND TENONS BROUGHT TOGETHER RICH AND DARK GRANADILLO LEGS, WITH A LIGHT AND SOFT POPLAR TOP.

BIKE|BENCH|EXERCISE KANSAS CITY KANSAS DURING MY DESIGN BUILD STUDIO, A COUPLE CLASSMATES AND I DESIGNED AND FABRICATED A PROTOTYPE BIKE RACK THAT CONVERTS TO A BENCH AND THEN A PIECE OF EXERCISE EQUIPMENT. AFTER PRESENTING THE DESIGN AND PRODUCT TO THE BOARD OF PARKS AND RECREATION, FOR KANSAS CITY KANSAS, WE WERE GIVEN A COMMISSION TO DESIGN AND PRODUCE FIVE DIFFERENT “TRAIL ELEMENTS” TO BE PLACED IN THE PARKS IN KANSAS CITY. THE IDEA BEHIND THE DESIGN CAME FROM THE INTERCONNECTIVITY BETWEEN KANSAS CITY KANSAS AND MISSOURI. THE CITY IS SHARED BETWEEN TWO STATES, SO SEAMLESSLY, THAT IT APPEARS TO BE ONE. THE FLUIDITY OF THE FORM IS THE REPRESENTATION OF THAT CONCEPT. A SINGLE LINEAR ELEMENT (STEEL PIPE) IS BENT AT SPECIFIC LOCATIONS TO FORM INTO SPATIAL ELEMENTS THAT WILL BE INTERACTIVE WITH PEDESTRIANS AND THE COMMUNITY. THE PRODUCTION OF THE TRAIL ELEMENTS TOOK MANY TRIAL AND ERRORS. AFTER MANY DIFFERENT ITERATIONS WE WERE ABLE TO COME UP WITH A FINAL FORM AND DIMENSIONS THAT WERE COMFORTABLE AND USEFUL. THERE IS A STANDARD BENCH, THAT IS THE CONSTANT BETWEEN EACH UNIT, AND THEN TWO DIFFERENT BIKE RACKS, AND FIVE DIFFERENT EXERCISE STATIONS. THERE ARE PULL UP, PUSH UP, DIPS, LEG LIFTS AND A PLATFORM, THAT ENCOURAGES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AS YOU MOVE THROUGH THE PARK. THIS IS A PARTICULARLY PROUD PROJECT, DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN CONCEIVED, BUILT AND IMPLEMENTED ENTIRELY BY MY CLASSMATES AND ME. INSTALLATION INTO THE PARKS IS ESTIMATED TO BE ON MARCH 2016.

THE DESIGN WAS BROKEN DOWN INTO THREE ENTITIES. TWO BIKE RACK VARIATIONS, A BENCH DESIGN (WHICH WOULD REMAIN THE CONSTANT) AND FIVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXERCISE EQUIPMENT. THESE CAN BE MIXED AND MATCHED INTO ANY VARIATIONS THAT THE USER REQUESTED. THE IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE PROJECT, AS DESIGNERS, WAS TO KEEP A SIMILAR LANGUAGE THAT WOULD TIE EACH OF THE ELEMENTS TOGETHER. AS FOR FABRICATORS WE WANTED TO LEAVE THE ABILITY TO CUSTOMIZE CERTAIN THINGS TO THE CONSUMER. SINCE THE FORMS ARE ALL COMPOSED OF A SINGLE LINEAR ELEMENT DIMENSIONS CAN BE EASILY CHANGED. MORE BIKE RACKS COULD BE ADDED, A LARGER OR SMALLER BENCH SEAT COULD BE REQUESTED, AND VARIABLE HEIGHT FOR THE EXERCISE PIECES ARE EASILY ACHIEVABLE THROUGH SOME CALCULATION CHANGED.

CINEMATICS ART MUSEUM DALLAS TEXAS THE RATIONAL BEHIND THIS DESIGN IS UTILIZING A LOT OF THE CONTEXT OF DOWNTOWN DALLAS. BEING ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF DOWNTOWN, THERE IS A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE VIEWS FOR THE SKYLINE AND MANY OF THE MAJOR BUILDINGS THAT ARE PRESENT THERE. TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LOCATION (RIGHT NEXT TO THE NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER) CUES WERE TAKEN FROM THE CLEAN FORM OF THE NASHER. THIS BUILDING HAS A SIMPLE FLOOR PLATE DESIGN THAT GAINS COMPLEXITY THROUGH ROTATING THE INDIVIDUAL FLOORS AS YOU PROGRESS THROUGH THE BUILDING. THIS ROTATION STARTS TO CREATE DYNAMIC INTERIOR SPACES, WHERE YOU GO FROM INTIMATE HUMAN SCALED AREAS, TO LARGE GRANDIOSE ATRIUMS THAT CAN HOLD LARGER WORKS. HAVING THESE VARIABLE SPACES MAKES FOR MOMENTS AND GLIMPSES OF THE ART WORK TO COME WHILE STILL ALLOWING FOR VIEWS OF WHERE YOU HAVE JUST COME FROM.

LOCATION | ANALYSIS

SITE IS LOCATED IN THE ARTS DISTRICT OF DOWNTOWN DALLAS TEXAS IN BETWEEN FLORA, OLIVE, PEARL AND THE EXIT RAMP FOR WOODALL RODGERS FREEWAY

IDENTIFY WITH THE CORNER OF FLORA AND OLIVE, WHERE THERE IS THE MOST PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC COMING FROM DOWNTOWN AND THE NASHER SCULPTURE GARDEN. ALIGN WITH FRONT OF SIGHT WHERE FLORA STREET ACTS AS THE MAIN DATUM FOR THE ARTS DISTRICT

ORIENTING THE BUILDING SO IT EMBRACES THE SOUTHERN CORNER OF THE SITE, ACTIVATES THE INTERSECTION AND DRAWS PEOPLE FROM DOWNTOWN

CREATING A HABITABLE SITE WITH A LOT OF GREEN SPACE INVITES PEDESTRIANS TO UTILIZE THE AREA, AND CONTINUES THE STRING OF PARKS THAT ARE ALREADY SURROUNDING THE SITE

LOBBY | TERRACES

AS THE FLOOR PLATES TWIST, THESE LARGE ATRIUM SPACES ALLOW FOR MANY TERRACES THAT GIVE YOU A NEW PERSPECTIVE OF WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN AND WHAT YOU HAVE JUST LOOKED AT. THE TWISTING OF THE SIMPLE L-SHAPED FLOOR PLATES THEN GIVE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR A VERY DYNAMIC CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM. THE GLASS TURNS FROM WALLS INTO CEILINGS INTO FLOORS, THAT REACH OVER YOU AND THEN CUT UNDERNEATH YOU AS YOU PROGRESS THROUGH THE SPACE. ADDING ON AN OPERABLE WOOD LOUVRE SYSTEM CREATES AN EVER CHANGING FORM THAT KEEPS THE SPACE COMFORTABLE, WHILE CASTING DYNAMIC SHADOWS INTO THE SPACE AS WELL AS GIVING TEXTURE AND FLUIDITY TO THE FACADE.

KANSAS CITY CONVENTION CENTER KANSAS CITY MISSOURI THE KANSAS CITY CONVENTION CENTER IS THREE DIFFERENT BUILDINGS THAT COVER FOUR CITY BLOCKS. IT ACTS AS A HUB FOR MANY LARGE EVENTS IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT IS IN LACK OF AN ENTRANCE. THIS PROJECT ASKS FOR A DESIGN OF AN ENTRANCE/GATHERING SPACE FOR THE CONVENTION CENTER THAT WILL ATTRACT PEOPLE TO THE SPACE AND ALLOW FOR COMMUNITY GATHERINGS. PART OF THE WAY THAT MANY SPACES IN URBAN SETTINGS DRAW PEOPLE IN IS BY HAVING A GREEN SPACE THAT IS CONDUCIVE FOR GATHERING AND TO GIVE PEOPLE A PAUSE. THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING LEANS BACK TO MERGE INTO THE LANDSCAPE AND CREATE AN INVITING ENTRANCE THAT IS NOT AS INTRUSIVE AS THE LARGE SKYSCRAPERS AROUND IT. ONCE ENTERING INTO THE BUILDING, ANGULAR CUTS THROUGH THE FLOORS ACT AS A PORTAL THROUGH ALL OF THE SPACES, WHERE YOU CAN VIEW ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE BUILDING AND ALSO ACTS AS THE MAIN CIRCULATION WHERE YOU CAN EXPERIENCE THE TRANSITION OF ELEVATION THROUGH WALKING UP THE WINDING STAIRCASE IN THE CENTER OF THE SPACE. THERE ARE ALWAYS MOMENTS FOR PAUSE WHERE YOU STOP AT THE BALCONIES TO VIEW THE SKYLINE OF KANSAS CITY. THIS COMBINATION OF LANDSCAPE AND DYNAMIC TRANSITIONAL SPACES MAKE FOR AN INTERESTING AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE TO ENTER INTO THE CONVENTION CENTER.

WILCOX MUSEUM LAWRENCE KANSAS THE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS IS IN NEED FOR AN EXHIBITION/ LECTURE HALL SPACE WHERE THEY CAN SHOW AND TEACH ANCIENT ROMAN CULTURE. DELVING INTO THE CULTURAL ASPECTS OF THE ROMAN SCULPTURES, THEY WERE TRADITIONALLY SHOWN IN ORCHARDS WHERE THE SCULPTURES WERE AMONGST THE TREES. FOR THIS DESIGN, THE THREE BOX TRUSS SECTIONS ORIENTED TO ALIGN WITH THE GARDEN PATH, STREET PATH AND THEN THE GROVE ITSELF. THE ALIGNMENT FOR THE PARK ALLOWS FOR THE SCULPTURES TO RETURN BACK TO THERE ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE OF THE TREES IN THE BACKGROUND. HAVING THE BUILDING WRAPPED IN CHANNEL GLASS, THE BUILDING TRANSITIONS FROM SOUTHERN FACING SANDBLASTED CHANNELS TO CLEAR NORTH FACING CHANNEL GLASS MAKES FOR A CONSTANT AMBIENT LIGHT IN THE EXHIBITION SPACE.
