CHiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is Italian for light-dark. With origins in the italian renaissance, is used in art to illustrate the strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. It is also a technical term used by artists for the use of contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume in modeling three-dimensional objects and figures. The use of dark subjects dramatically lit by a shaft of light from a single unseen source, was a compositional device developed by Ugo da Carpi, Giovanni Baglione, and Caravaggio.

OPULENCE
As the fortunes of merchants, bankers, and tradespeople improved, they had more than enough money to meet their basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. They began to desire larger, more luxurious homes, fine art for these residences, and extravagant clothing to show off their wealth in public. These desires of the middle class stimulated the economy.

VA N I T Y
One common aspect between the modern day and renaissance periods are that women still invest large amounts of time, money, and physical and emotional energy into their physical being. Women during the Renaissance Period had an interesting way of applying cosmetics. White lead face paint was very popular among the Renaissance women and they used it to paint their faces, neck, and cleavage. A side effect was that the white lead made their hair fall out, which explains why Renaissance women had high foreheads and receding hairlines.

A N AT O M Y
Italian renaissance artists became anatomists by necessity, as they attempted to refine a more lifelike, sculptural portrayal of the human figure. Scientific naturalism allowed artists in the early renaissance to begin to demand that society think of them as more than just skilled manual laborers. They argued that their work, which was based on science and math was a product of their intellect just as much as their hands.

BELIEF
The new ideals of humanism, although more secular in some aspects, developed against a Christian backdrop, especially in the Northern Renaissance. Most of the new art was commissioned by or in dedication to the Church. However, the Renaissance had a profound effect on contemporary theology, particularly in the way people perceived the relationship between man and God.
