A country that sits at the most northern tip of South America is home to 45.6 million Latin American residents. The land area is approximately 712.5 million square miles. Colombia has become a main fashion center in Latin America. The city of Medellin is Colombia’s main clothing center and accounts for 70 percent of garment production and 38 percent of textile production.
Colombia is becoming a hot new hub for start-up companies. More and more American tech companies, like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft, are starting to open offices in Bogota. Colombia’s tech industry grew 177 percent averaging to about $6.8 billion between 2007 and 2012. Currently, the country is leading in a tech surge. By 2018, the government hopes to have 63 percent of the country connected Online. In the apparel and textile industry, Colombian companies are leading in production of intelligent textiles, like fabrics containing antibacterial, hydrating, anti-odor, and UV-filtration technologies.
S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y Colombia’s recent free trade agreement with the European Union eliminated prior apparel tariffs, making this market more attractive to foreign brands looking to expand. During the past decade, factories also started to offer fullpackage production and sourcing. Also, Colombia’s hand embroidery work are a strong aspect of their apparel and textile industry giving the country a competitive advantage in apparel and accessories production. Other environmental issues occurring in Colombia are deforestation, soil erosion, air pollution, and planting of illicit drug crops.
L A B O R The Constitution and Colombian labor law prohibits employees to earn less than one minimum legal monthly salary. Employers are required to pay day workers at least once a week and monthly/permanent employees at least once a month. Concerning health and industrial security obligations, employers are required to prepare locations and supply working equipment that guarantees the security and health of their employees. For example, employers with more than 10 permanent employees are obliged to implement Health and Industrial Safety Regulations and create an Occupational Health Program and Committee with the approval of the Ministry of Social Protection. Colombia’s Government passed Law 1719 in 2014, which guarantees access to legal services for victims of commercial sexual exploitation and armed conflict; implemented Child Labor Pacts to assist in the formulation of child labor policies and laws and improve coordination between the Ministry of Labor and other government agencies; and launched the Network Against Child Labor campaign to unite 14 businesses in efforts to eliminate child labor in their supply chains.

COUNTRY ANALYSIS
COUNTRY
The sourcing team at Lily White decided to look for suppliers in China due to being the top textile exporter in the world, and having access and a large amount of the materials needed in our swim wear. The team also took into account lead time and cost of shipping by ocean freight. China’s textile industry is declining, because labor costs are rising, which is making it more expensive for companies to do business with the. The main cause of rising costs of labor in China is due to more competitors entering the market, and the profit margin shrinking, factory owners have had to pay their workers more ($650 a month). Another country selected was Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka was chosen because it has a plentiful amount of suppliers for swim wear and/or nylon based products. Based on this reasoning, Lily White decided to conduct further research on Sri Lanka. The last country we looked into was Colombia in South America. Colombia was chosen for many beneficial reasons. For one, it is home to one of the largest growing swim wear manufacturing industries in the world. The manufacturing mills house skilled workers that have years of experience in working with nylon, Lycra, and other spandex fabrics. Another benefit of doing business in Colombia is the short lead time it will take for the products to reach our destination.
SUPPLIERS
China’s top supplier, who will be the most accommodating to Lily White was Kambridge Dress Enterprises. Kambridge Dress Enterprises is best suited for our company due to their experience in swim wear manufacturing, and supplying spandex knit as their main material. Kambridge Dress Enterprises also has an extensive client list including Target. Linea Aqua is definitely the best choice for a supplier from Sri Lanka because of the amount of business they do with the United States, and the specificity of women’s swim wear. The best known supplier in Colombia for swim wear is Textile Lafayette SA. They are housed out of Bogota, Colombia. They have over 72 years of experience in the textile industry. It is a vertically integrated business involving spinning, weaving, and finishing. They have several other offices in Ecuador, Venezuela, Perú, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico. They are known to manufacture performance fabrics.
COST
Cost factors to take into account when doing manufacturing in China include the cost of shipping from China to our destination in Los Angeles, California. The cost will be roughly around $3,000-$4,000 with a lead time of 29-30 days. In terms of cost, there are a lot of different factors to consider when going into business with Sri Lanka. Minimum wage is at a low where skilled laborers are making 55 USD a month. Shipping from Sri Lanka is higher due to the distance between there and Los Angeles. When choosing our country we wanted to choose the most profitable and affordable option. To manufacturer in Colombia, there are several costs one needs to consider. For one, the labor cost is pretty low in the manufacturing sector of Colombia’s economy. Workers receive an average of $250 a month and work full-time. Colombia has many ports and airports for easy freight distribution. Therefore, shipping costs equal up to $883 per TU from the suppliers in Bogota, Colombia to our destination in Los Angeles, California. In conclusion, we believe the low cost to manufacture our product line will work best to leverage profitability for our company.
S T R AT E G Y
C O N C LU S I O N
After researching and analyzing the different countries and suppliers we believe the right move will be to manufacture our products in Colombia. We chose to do business in Colombia, specifically with Textile Lafayette SA, for reasons including highly skilled workers, advanced techniques when dealing with performance fabrics, and low cost quotes. We believe the selected country and supplier matches Lily White’s vision of products that will help care for the environment. Our company decided to partner with Lafayette textile mills in Bogota, Colombia to manufacture our swimsuits. We chose Lafayette for their commitment to sustainability in their workplace and the welfare in their community. The company also stands for preserving the environment and natural resources while doing business, which is one of our key values when looking into a manufacturing company. Lafayette takes part in social projects to help their community build homes for families, puts employees health first, and provides advanced technology to create sustainable textiles. We believe choosing Lafayette will benefit our values as a company.
