New York’s Low Divorce Rates The United Nations Demographic Yearbook Revealed that the U.S. has the fifth highest divorce rate in the world, with 3.4 divorces in every 1,000. Marriage may be one of the happiest occasions for every couple, but it also marks the start of the challenges of living together. After believing that they’ve found their match, however, even the slightest differences could lead to a divorce.

Low Divorce Rate New York holds the third lowest divorce rate in the U.S., with a score of 2.5, along with Iowa and North Dakota, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), National Vital Statistics Report, and U.S. Census. The WSJ based their analysis on the number of divorces and annulments in the state, and divided it according to its population.


Low Rates, Big City The American Community Survey stated that more women are filing for divorce (9.3%) compared to men (6.2%). Despite being one of the biggest cities in the U.S., New York’s low rates are due to the difficulty of filing for a divorce. This is why hiring a lawyer specializing in this area is more preferable than a general practice lawyer.A report by NBC New York also revealed that New Yorkers tend to stay single longer. This is why fewer people per capital are getting married and divorced compared to other states.

Grounds for Divorce

All divorce cases in New York, regardless of the county, is under the State Supreme Court. Couples must file only at its designated offices. The Family Court will be involved, if order support or custody is included in the case, but they can’t grant the divorce itself the ground.
