“Connecting Dairymen Coast to Coast”
PO
Siemers Siring Success at WDE
No need to tell you as dairymen, breeders and/or cowpeople: TIME FLIES! I had to check back on something in the year 2012 – only 10 years ago. This is how I ran into an article we published that year in Holstein International. The headline was: “How De-Su Holsteins became King of Genomics”. I was almost thunder-struck! Was this already 10 years ago? For this was an article that I’ll never forget. Not when we did the unforgettable interview with De-Su’s Darin Meyer, and not when we published it: never before did an article create so many reactions. Oh yes: in 2012, genomics was still very new, and almost like a no-go-zone for many dairymen worldwide.
Today, genomics has strongly progressed and is a vital part of the dairy industry. Lately I interviewed a European AI company, and when we spoke about the impact of daughter proven sires, they responded: oh, they hardly have an impact anymore, for only 10% of all our inseminations are done with their semen. Genomic bulls take care of 90%.’ Sure: we know this is not the case in all areas, but it indicates the global progress of genomics. Darin was clear in 2012: ‘I am only using genomic sires.’ Back in 2012, that was a real strong statement. Today, such a statement wouldn’t turn any heads. In only 10 years of time, genomics conquered the dairy business.

HUL SDALE B MACNUT-PP: Browndale: Adagio x Science x Windbrook
At 3198 LPI, MacNut is the highest rated daughter proven PP bull in Canada. Now with over 100 daughters in his proof, he has moved up to +10 for conformation and +14 feet & legs. Here is one of the very best for improving feet & legs, a solid type bull that will remove the horns 100% of the time! This Adagio son is also A2A2. The maternal line of MacNut traces through Science-Windbrook-Denzel-Goldwyn-Lheros. Brad Hulshof purchased the Lheros as his 4H calf and she became the family foundation cow. The Windbrook grand-dam is now EX-93 and is an outstanding brood cow around which the Hulsdale herd is built. ‘I purchased the dam (<Science) of MacNut 4 years ago and am very impressed by her excellent feet and legs and overall balance and dairy strength,’ comments Doug Brown. ‘She is also one of the best temperament cows I have ever worked with. When using MacNut you can expect average sized cows with extremely good feet and legs, and he leaves wider teat placement making him a favorite for robot farms.’ MacNut semen is available in Canada from Browndale or Holdstar, and in the US from Triple Hil Sires.
BRANDT-VIEW DO IT NOW: 515HO00427
AI Total: Doc x Draftking x Heisenberg
Do It Now is the Nr.1 Doc son in the breed. ‘He is backed by a full pedigree that includes a number of bulls that are the very best at what they do,’ points out Jan DeVries. ‘Of course Doc is a great type bull, the dam is by Draftking who brings high components, then a couple of generations further, Uno brings udder health and components, Planet who added milk volume and corrects for straightness of legs, and then Shottle who provides a strong foundation to build on…and then there are several more generations of VG and EX cows.’ Do It Now is a very complete, allround sire with no significant weaknesses. His 2940 gTPI includes 826 milk +.23% fat +.03% protein with 2.59 type, 2.34 UDC and 1.19 F&L. He combines +0.7 fertility, +2.1 mastitis, +1.1 livability and 5.0 productive life. The Do It Now daughters will not be as tall as the Doc’s and he is significantly better for the fertility, SCS and livability traits. ‘He can be used on heifers, is positive on teat length and DPR, and will leave slightly cycled legs that track very straight viewed from behind,’ adds DeVries.

Walhowdon: Prominent Name in New England Holsteins for the Past 70 Years
Walhowdon has been a respected name in Holsteins since the late 1940s: That’s when Wallace Patch and sons Howard and Donald registered a prefix that resulted from merging their three names. However, the Patch family has been farming this land for much longer than that…since 1778!
Text: Doug Savage Photos: Han HopmanWalhowdon has long been regarded as one of the solid breeder herds of the New England region. Located at Lebanon, New Hampshire, close to the Vermont border, Walhowdon is about 2½ hours north of Boston. Just a few miles from the farm is the famous Ivy League school Dartmouth College, one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Walhowdon is now run by Mark & Jadene Patch and their family. The main cow families of the herd all trace back through many generations of Walhowdon breeding to the foundation in the 1950s. A
Wmajor herd sale was held in 2016 to facilitate transitioning of farm ownership, with many of the elite cows dispersed through that sale, though the herd has since been rebuilt ginal bloodlines.

RED STARS
While there are only a few red animals dotted throughout the 90-cow herd they certainly do attract attention. ‘We had three daughters of Windsor-Manor Zdestiny, a red-carrier Destry son out of a 94 Shottle daughter of
Rud Zip,’ explains Mark Patch. ‘He didn’t end up with such a great proof but he sure worked well for us. All three went EX with two of those at 93 and the other at 92 and they are just super cows,’ he continues. ‘The 93-point cows are both really high fat cows too with Trey running 5.9% fat and 3.6% protein on her current record, while Stomp is at 4.7% fat.’ Walhowdon Zdestny Stomp-Red EX-93 is the picture cow with this story. Her pedigree traces back through an 88 Advent-90 Derry-92 Choice-90 Leadman to herd icon Walhowdon Enhancer Mary EX-91. ‘Mary was a cow
that made milk so easily,’ comments Mark. ‘She was a cow that brought a lot of attention to the herd.’ Mary’s top record was 49,440lb milk and she sent a number of sons to AI in the early ‘90s. ‘We’ve had a lot of success over the years breeding good solid high-scoring cows that last for a lot of years but we just don’t seem to be able to get the kind of index numbers that you need to be competitive in this genomic era. We used to sell bulls to AI but genomics has made that a lot more challenging. However, we still sell a number of herd bulls every year.’ Stomp has
Jacot daughters scored EX-90 and 85, as well as an 88 Diamondback and an 85 Ammo. The other cow, Walhowdon Zdestiny Trey-Red EX-93, is from a slightly different branch of the family being out of a Savard from a 92 Talent and then the Derry daughter. Trey is almost 10 years old now and her daughters include a 91 Jacot, an 86 Diamondback and an 86 Doc.
PROVEN SIRES
The herd now has 15 EX cows, including four at EX-93. In addition to Stomp and Trey, there is Walhowdon Shottle Passion and Walhowdon Epic Sunny. The herd also includes an 88-point 2-year-old, Walhowdon Doc Zales, whose EX McCutchen dam is still in the herd. The current BAA is at 108.4. A top producer in the herd at present is Walhowdon Supersire Unit EX-91, whose most recent lactation stood at 365d 42,960lb/19,486kg 4.5% fat 3.1% protein. The Supersire daughter comes from another branch of the family tracing back through a 90 Alexander-87 O-Man-87 BW Marshall-87 Celsius-80 Grand-91 Leadman-91 Blackstar to Enhancer Mary. Unit has 9 daughters sired by Coffee, Helix and Parfect. Her BW Marshall 3rd dam is a full
sister to the bull Walhowdon Marshall Harry, who sold over 870,000 doses of semen for Accelerated Genetics. The O-Man 2nd dam is also the mother of another successful daughter-proven bull from the family, Walhowdon Russell Cobra, a Select Sires bull.
FOUNDATION
Mark explains the herd foundation. ‘When my grandfather, father and uncle made the switch from Jerseys to Holsteins in the late 40s and early 50s, a core group of 10 Holstein bred-heifers was brought down from Ontario. The selection was made by the Holstein Canada Field Rep., and they were shipped to us in a rail car.’ Mark goes on to explain the breeding program. ‘Our farm works towards steady genetic improvement of cows that have a balance between production and type. The areas we are focusing on most are improving milk components through genetics and feed quality and we are gradually shifting our type to produce what we view as functional type. We are working hard to maintain the strength and power throughout while having exceptional udders and functionally correct legs and rumps allowing for a long-lived healthy

cow that will stand the test of time,’ he continues. ‘We do this by carefully selecting the bulls we use in our breeding program and from there we individually mate each cow. We also focus on a few cow families that we find exemplify what we are looking for in the herd and we have focused on these brood cows to consistently produce that kind.’
RESPONSIBILTIES
Walhowdon is very much a family farm with each family member having their own specialty. Mark takes care of the genetics, crops, calf care and feeding cows while his wife Jadene, a veterinarian, handles the vet work, herd health and milking. Their son Will does most of the cropping, field maintenance, machine care and repair work. Daughter Alex does the breeding, repro work, cow health and heifer care, while Mark’s sister Susan handles barn care and the night watch.
MAPLE SUGAR
A renowned product of New England (and Canada) is maple syrup so it is no surprise to discover that Walhowdon has an area of sugar bush too. ‘It’s supplemental income. We are only fairly small with 3,000 taps and we use a pipeline and vacuum system to collect sap from the maple trees in the spring,’ explains Mark. ‘The sap goes through a reverse osmosis system to concentrate it down to 20% and then we use an oil powered boiler to boil it down for the final product. That’s a much more energy-efficient way to do it. We sell some of it retail at the farm but there is quite a lot sold in bulk to a major supplier.’ l
