This year it is almost 20 years ago that a completely new sire debuted on the nr.1-position of the TPI ranking. His name: O-Bee Manfred Justice. At 2891 gTPI, Ace is the highest ranking son of Blumenfeld Frazzled Brass. Ace is an udder specialist (2.14 UDC) with a production proof of 1324 milk +.12%f +.02%p. Born in December 2019, he already has significant numbers of daughters on the ground. His dam comes from the deep Anna family at Ruann and is the highest ranking daughter of Mr Draco Battle, a Draco son out of a Mogul grand-daughter of Gen-I-Beq Shottle Bombi. ‘The dam of Ace is GP-83 with a VG mammary as a 2-year-old and made 1,300lb fat at 2 years,’ comments Steve Maddox. ‘The next dams are 91, 88, 90, 85, 91 and 90. The three generations behind the dam all have records over 40,000lb and 1,600 of fat.’ Ace daughters should have moderate frames with average stature and size, open rib and correct slope to the rump. The impressive udders should be shallow with very strong attachments, with good udder cleft and teats placed well under the udder. Ace is a good SCS bull (2.78) and has a PL of 4.7. He could be protected for daughter fer tility (-1.2 DPR).

Agree traces back to the Lead Mae family and her long list of high-ranking proven sons includes Alligator, Adagio-P, Archer-P, Applicable and Adorable. ‘Alligator progeny are extremely impressive and are some of the most talked about cows in barns today,’ comments Mike West from Semex. ‘Rear udders are extremely high and wide and breeders are impressed with the combination of well defined ligament and correct teat length and placement. They are very balanced dairy cows that move extremely well on their feet and legs.’ His show-winning heifers include the Junior Champion at last year’s Canadian National, Kingsway A Twix. Alligator’s proof of 3508 LPI includes 1260kg milk +.08%f +.00%p with 14 type, 11 udders and 14 feet & legs. His early sons are now available. Huge worldwide popularity makes it difficult for Alligator to keep up with demand.
Two young bulls getting many positive reviews for their impres sive calves are the maternal brothers OCD Mystic Crush and OCD Thunder Storm. ‘They hail from OCD Delta Missy EX-94, who is one of Jonathan & Alicia Lamb’s favorites at Oakfield Corners,’ comments Kevin Jorgensen from Select Sires. ‘I’ve always been a great admirer of this cow as well because she is a 2nd generation 94-point cow tracing back to the World Dairy Expo Champion Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy. The daugh ters are very eye appealing with terrific frames and beautiful open rib. They are standouts in the heifer pens and we have received many comments from our sales staff and breeders that they really like them. He’s a balanced linear sire and should improve frame traits yet not make them extremely tall. Being a Crushabull son, I would expect him to improve all udder traits.’

Jagger is a high type bull from the Shauna branch of the Rudolph Missy family. He scores 3.76 gPTAT and is higher on daughter fertility than some of the other high type bulls with his -0.6 DPR. He boasts 2.99 UDC and 2.19 FLC and is a high component bull with 93 milk +.17% fat +.09% protein with an overall gTPI of 2705. He is sired by Siemers Hunk, a Hotline from Monterey Hanina. His dam is a VG-88 2yr-old King Doc that traces through a GP Doorsopen x VG-87 Jacey to Ammon-Peachy Planet Shauna EX-92. ‘With his high type and acceptable DPR, breeders used him quite extensively and he now has lots of daughters in barns across the country,’ comments Roger Turner from Jetstream. ‘They are consistent in their pattern of tall, stretchy, leggy, stylish well-balanced heifers and they are now showing up in the show ring this spring and summer as well. Many excel for genomic values that often exceed parent average. We have already selected our first Jagger son to enter our program at Jetstream and anticipate that we will add at least a couple more. They meet our goals of supplying our clients with all-round bulls that combine type, production and health.’

Most of the Kingsway herd is milked through two Lely A5 robots and is housed in a sand-bedded free-stall barn that was added to the end of the existing barn a few years ago. There are still 30 tie-stalls in the older section of the barn where show cows, flush cows and fresh cows are kept. The McMillan’s maintain a very active embryo flush program with 8-10 donors flushed every 6 weeks and quite a few of the resulting embryos go for export. ‘Japan is our biggest market,’ comments Ethan. ‘We always try to have something new and exciting to add to the

Knonaudale Jasmine EX-96 is the other main superstar of the breeding program. She was Grand Champion at Stormont 2014, Northum berland 2017 and the Opportunity Show 2017 as well as 2nd in the Longtime Production class at the Royal 2017. Goldwyn daughter Jasmine is very much the epitome of the kind of cow they like at Kingsway. ‘They don’t have to be the big gest cows in the world to suite us, but they do need to have really good udders and really well balanced frames,’ comments Ethan. Jasmine is out of a Lyster that scored EX-92 in the US and then an 88 Cousteau. Her 5 EX daughters include
Kingsway Terrason Allie EX-95 was the cow that really put the herd on the map. Born in 2002, she is backed by an EX Progress and an EX Tab fol lowed by an 88 Prestar and 2 more generations of EX. She was a notable contender in the show ring during her long career, including twice Reserve Grand at the Ontario Discovery Show, though that was somewhat overshadowed by her success as a brood cow. Her grand-daugh ter Kingsway Sanchez Arangatang EX-95, out of Abra Cadabra, has been the spearhead of the more recent development of this family. Already with 8 EX daughters, she is a 15* brood cow.

‘The very first embryo we exported was from the Dundee daughter of Allie, Abra Cadabra. That resulted in the cow Knowlesmere Goldwyn Abrakaboom who was British National Cham pion in 2016 after winning the UK Dairy Day Show. We had sold Abra Cadabra as a heifer in a sale for C$80,000 and so we owned her in part nership with Trent-Valley and Jason Mell.’

Mudpie was HM Intermediate Champion in Madison for Milk Source and was the mother of the Reginald daughter Knonaudale Orangecrush EX-93 who was shown successfully by Mike & Julie Duckett. The 13 year-old Jasmine continues to be a successful flush cow at Kingsway. ‘Over the years we’ve sold enough heifers and embryos out of these two families that they are spread all round the world. A cool thing is that now when you look at show results from anywhere around the world it’s rare that you can’t find something that doesn’t trace back to either Allie or Jasmine.’

‘Selling your best young heifers every year means that you have to keep a very active breeding program and be constantly finding outstanding new cow families to use for donors. Buying and selling is what we do,’ remarks Ethan. ‘It’s not just show heifers that people come to buy. It’s very rewarding to see breed ers buying animals to take home to develop top cow families too.’ l

flush program to keep buyers coming back for more. Allie and Jasmine might be the backbone of our program but it’s having new options available that creates excitement. We are always looking to buy new emerging cow families and young stars of the breed to continue to attract interest. And it’s important to understand what the buyers needs are. We’ve got nothing against genomics; it’s a great tool that’s having quite an impact. However, the buyers we deal with are looking for reliably proven name bulls in a pedi gree. We are not selling to the genomic segment of the market so we use almost exclusively well proven bulls with just a few genomic sires.’
Hendercroft Windbrook Gummybear EX-95, 4th in the Longtime Production class at last year’s Canadian National, is one brood cow attracting attention. She is maternal sister to the EX-96 Hendercroft Fever Bazooka and is one of 20 EX daughters out of Hendercroft Lheros Gumball EX-96. Another popular donor in the Kingsway breeding program is Kings-Ransom Canteloupes, a VG-89 2-year-old Kingboy out of Kings-Ransom Mogul Cleavage EX-95 whose pedigree traces through a 92 Goldwyn- 93 Champion to an EX Rubens sister to Debutante Rae. Looking to the future there are two impres sive young Alligator heifers out of Ladyrose Caught Your Eye who Kingsway sold to Geno Source. Caught Your Eye is a VG-89 2-year-old Unix out of a Doorman daughter of Rosedale Lexington EX-95 from the Blackrose family.

We have enjoyed the Registered Holstein industry for well over 40 years. Many trophies and Premier Breeder banners. We again have a barnful of young cows, about 80, and pens full of youngstock (100) that encompass our breeding philosophy. Our official BAA in February of this year was 111.1. Our recent special classification of 43 cows added 13 new Very Good 2-year-olds, 7 new Excellents and 9 Excellents raised in score. We have three 3-year-olds that maxed out at EX-92: Willows-Edge Doorman Breezy, Willows-Edge Crush Kenni and Willows-Edge Diamondback Mimicry.
