No coincidence!

Interesting! In today’s TPI-top-100 (December 2022 summary) we can find 5 bulls that have a type score that is higher than 2.00 PTAT. Not very many, one would think. When we go back 10 years (December 2012), only the top-10 already included 7 bulls over 2.00 PTAT. In the top-25, there were 18 over 2.00. And in the top-100? They were almost countless! (Note: I realize base-adjustments may play a role, but that does not severely impact this situation.)

Now sure: we know that the TPI formula has been changed. In favor of fitness traits, and rightfully so. Since the Holstein breed has put emphasis on vital traits such as Productive Life, Udder Health, Fertility and Stillbirths/Calving Ease, the breed has made great and profitable progress for these traits, making the Holstein breed into a better breed.

But yet: type attracts. Both in small dairies as well as in dairies with thousands of cows. When we speak to dairymen, very few like to let go on important type traits such as udders and feet & legs. Breeding on Productive Life only does not do the job for them. It is not really a coincidence that these very few bulls with type scores over 2.00 PTAT are the ones that are much more popular than many other sires in the top-100. Here are their names: St.Gen Rapid; Claynook Zasberilla (new in top100), Cherry-Lily Luster-P, Aurora Mitchell and Woodcrest King Doc: Yes, all of them bestsellers. And yes, the highest among them (King Doc at 3.19) is the biggest bestseller, despite the fact that he is the lowest of them for TPI. Type: no coincidence.

The type star is sired by Brabantdale Alleyoop (Crushabull-Rambo-McCutchen) and is backed by a branch of the Rudy Missy family. Dazzle was bred by Andy Carter of Greenville, IL. His super-uddered dam BGP Noble Dhrmy VG-87 is from an 87-point Delta out of View-Home Uno Hope EX-92, maternal sister to the bulls Monterey and Powerball-P. Behind that the pedigree runs through Pine-Tree 2149 Robst 4846 VG-87 then Zenith Sheen VG-87, Martha Sheen VG-87 and Missy Martha VG-86 to Rudy Missy EX-92. Expect moderately tall cows with good depth and open, dairy rib. The outstanding udder scores are highlighted by shallow udder depth with over 4.0 for fore attachment and rear udder height. Dazzle carries the aAa code of 234, and in addition to his high scores for daughter fertility he is 2.76 SCS and 2.2 mastitis resistance. Components (-.12% fat and -.01% protein) and short teats (-.67) would be areas to keep in mind when using Dazzle.

He’s the only available red-carrier Lambda son, and he’s polled and +12 conformation! Impact has a special story. Bill & Alicia Killing of Impact Farms at Stratford, Ontario, purchased sexed Lambda embryos from the Global Cow winner Calbrett Kingboy Miranda-P EX-93. This super brood cow already had such sons as Mirand-PP, Max-PP and Redeye-P to her credit, and her Delta-Lambda daughters would be a great boost to a breeding program. However, the Killing’s were greeted with a major surprise when one of the resulting pregnancies produced a bull calf. A few weeks later when genomic results arrived their disappointment turned to delight: The young bull had received all the right genes from either parent – he was polled, red-carrier, A2A2 and BB, along with nice proof numbers including outstanding type at +12 conformation! It was like winning the lottery! Impact’s proof shows 1026kg milk -.01% fat -.02% protein and he excels for temperament, milking speed, hoof health and herdlife while figures are average for the other functional traits. Type numbers include 9 mammary and 11 feet & legs. Daughters should be tall with good depth of body, strong loins and wide rumps. Udders should be well attached with wide rear udders and he should add impressive depth of heel.

DG Charley and his (grand) sons The Meticulously Bred Charley Receives a Dream Successor with Captain

Because of the restrictive sire of sons strategy, the number of sires of sons with numerous sons at several AI organizations is becoming fewer. However, the Supershot son DG Charley was not yet negatively impacted by this. As you can see in the accompanying table, he produced sons for numerous AIs world-wide: Successful sons, to be sure, with one of them worth singling out: Hurtgenlea Richard Charl, who shone due to his own elite achievements but particularly as a sire of the world’s most talked about bull: Genosource Captain with 3214 TPI progeny proven! You realize: that makes Charley a foundation sire of eminent influence and value. Hence our article about the globetrotter Charley.

Celebrated and loathed at the time: Leadfield Columbus. He was a glossy son of Paclamar Bootmaker out of the world’s first “Million Dollar Cow”, Allendairy Glamourous Ivy EX-96. With the appearance of his first milking daughters, Columbus broke through sky high… but the bull was syndicate sampled and thus the risks were high. He was used a lot, but unfortunately… later Columbus would fall through the ice. But, because of his “boosted” start, Columbus still received a number of opportunities. For example, we find his name in the pedigree of super millionaire Planet, but also in one of the world’s most esteemed cow families: Larcrest’s C family. Indeed, the very first Larcrest cow in this family is named Larcrest Loris Colleen and is a daughter of Columbus! She is the 5th dam behind Gold Medal Dam Larcrest Juror Chanel EX-93. In turn, this Chanel is the 5th dam behind

Mogul daughter DG Candide VG-85: the dam of the main character in this ar ticle, DG Charley.

GENOMICS

By the way, Charley’s dam Candide was not a coincidence, Diamond Genetics General Manager Jan de Vries told us in 2022. As such we go back to 2010, when there were a lot of changes being made at his organization, with them shifting to a focus primarily on genomics. In the first year they had missed the DNA sire De-Su Observer and were thus looking for his highest (young) daughters. One of them was Larcrest Cale (from the Chanel line), who was combined with the top DNA sire Mogul. This mating resulted in the mentioned bull dam Candide, as well as a full brother to her, Condor, who was successfully marketed by (the still small at the time) AI Total. Much greater

would be the impact of his full sister Candide, who was flushed as a yearling with Supershot, the top Supersire son who was very popular at the time. ‘A perfect combination,’ comments De Vries, who explained that the genes of Charley fell precisely in place: production and DPR from the paternal side, conformation from the maternal side. Soon after his birth, Charley scored sky high for genomics and thus breeder Diamond Genetics had to make a choice. For De Vries (also a co-owner of AI Total) the decision was quickly made; his AI Total was still too small for the global marketing of an elite bull like Charley, and so they decided to make a sale. Because Charley was high for gTPI, gPLI (UK) and gPFT (Italy), especially ABS Global/Genus was very interested, and thus the bull went to the Genus barn in Ruthin, Great Britain, with the condition that he would be made exclusively available

during the first year for making sons – note there the broad opportunities for Charley as a global sire of sons.

GLOBETROTTER

There, in the British Ruthin, Charley developed into a true globetrotter. Table 1 displays how the 13,173 milking daughters (2,458 farms) are spread over many countries. The number will further increase, explains Hannah Goodwin from the breeding company Genus: ‘Every month, we still ship thousands of doses of Charley. He has become very popular in Africa, with most doses going to countries like Kenya and Uganda. Looking at an overview of shipments, then currently Cyprus, Ukraine, Uganda,

Kenya and Italy are the most prominent clients. His combination of production, fertility, and extreme calving ease makes Charley still very popular to this day.’ In the meantime, Genus has a sufficient inventory of Charley, and for that reason he was culled in September 2022 at seven years and five months of age. This means that the Supershot son was continually in A.I. service for about 6.5 years… and posthumously, thousands of doses of his semen are still being marketed. Today Charley scores 2478 TPI with +0.19 PTAT for conformation. His production figures on the American base: +1321 lb milk

SONS

In modern breeding, it is understood, of course, that seven-year-old sires have (long ago) passed on their breeding tasks to their sons. That is also certainly the case for Charley, who produced numerous sons along with numerous daughters. An extensive overview can be found in Table 2, in which Charley’s sons are ranked according to TPI. In addition, it becomes evident that the highest sons do not always have the most daughters: so far, elite sire Charl has “just”

1,022 daughters, while sons like Crown, Neutron and Nebula have three times as many, but still end up 350 TPI points (or more) lower. The Italian (but Dutch born) Nebula and the Danish Crown are the Charley sons with the most daughters. The TPI top-5 of Charley sons is nearly entirely bred in North America, with the exception of the German bull Summerlake, who was born in The Netherlands. The maternal grandsires of the highest five Charley sons are Yoder, Balisto, Silver, Yoder and AltaSpring respectively. Four of these five are Mogul sons, which means that four of the five highest sons are line bred on Mogul (Charley’s dam is also a Mogul daughter).

CAPTAIN

Of course, the most notable of all sons is the already mentioned Charl, not only because he displays far and away the highest TPI (Summerlake, Nr.2, is 164 points lower), but especially because he is the sire of the highest progeny proven TPI sire that the Holstein breed has ever seen: Genosource Captain with 3214 TPI. As a young DNA sire, Captain was already a leader

for gTPI, and now with his first daughters, Captain has a sky high TPI value. This means that the many Captain sons will also be very valuable to the breed – and their number is still growing. Also in Germany, we find some iconic grandsons of Charley: Crown sons Camus (153 gRZG) and Carenzo (151) are very popular there. Speaking of Germany: in our TPI table, Summerlake may show up as the highest for the German team, but in the RZG ranking, it is still Casino (with 3,114 daughters) who is situated the highest, in a strong second place (153 RZG).

Undisputed: Charley influence is powerfully anchored in global Holstein breeding. l

This is Larcrest Crimson EX-94, granddam of Charley. Crimson’s Observer daughter Larcest Cale was purchased in 2010 by Diamond Genetics with a special goal in mind: to accelerate their genomic program. This worked well, since it resulted in the dominating sire Charley!

Todd Whittier: ‘Breeding Cows that Make Every Farmer Happy.’

“Whittier Farms since 1945” appears on the farm sign at the beginning of Douglas Road near Sutton, in the American state of Massachusetts. More than a kilometer down the road, we arrive at our destination and meet the friendly, elite breeder Todd Whittier. It turns out that the number of milking cows on his farm has now been reduced to 65, while some of the facilities are now occupied by beef cattle (crossbreds of Holstein with Limousin and Angus). The meat from the beef cattle is sold in their own country shop, which is managed by Todd’s brother Wayne and his family.
