“Connecting Dairymen Coast to Coast”

Your thoughts please

October! It is now exactly one year ago that we got the opportunity to take over the appreciated Cattle Connec tion magazine from Tom and Sandy Morris. So it is also one year ago we started to add editorial content to this magazine, including an editorial – like this one, always in the same position on the first page. “A Happy Hi to the Readers” was the title of our very first editorial in October 2021, informing all readers about our start as Holstein International team with the Cattle Connection magazine.

Since October 2021 we have been adding editorial material and we would like to say “Thank You” for the many nice comments we have received from you. But: we have so many more plans with Cattle Connection, being read and appreciated by so many dairymen across North America (while dairymen around the world also have dig ital access to it). And before we continue completely by ourselves, we would like to ask you for appreciated input: What would you like to see extra in the Cattle Connec tion? What more would you like or expect us to do?

Please email your comments, wishes or requests to us at: info@cattleconnection.com. Your thoughts and your time are much appreciated, so that we will be able to make correct choices, that you appreciate: Our Goal!

LADYS-MANOR

O VERDO: 200HO12266

Semex: Highjump x Granite x Millington

Overdo is sired by Highjump (Positive son from Habitan) and is out of the great brood cow Ladys-Manor Granite Oohm, a long-time former Nr.1 CTPI cow of the breed and still the highest for cows 4 years and older. Oohm is a Granite grand-daughter of Dorcy Oda, dam of the popular sires Octoberfest and Doorsopen. Oohm has 15 sons and 16 daughters all over 3000 gTPI, including her latest son Ladys-Manor Smoke Owen (3204 gTPI) who was born in May and ranks among the top-5 in the breed. Overdo should sire moderate sized, refined, dairy daughters with the great udders of the cow family. He excels for high compo nents and all health traits including calving-ease. Overdo’s proof is at 3077 gTPI with +532lb milk +.35% fat and +.10% protein with 1.46 gPTAT and 2.12 gUDC. ‘Overdo would be best used over animals that are high for milk yield,’ comments Julien Chabot. ‘We have used Overdo as a sire of sons and he now has 28 sons in the top-200 gTPI, with 14 of those in the top-100.’ Semen is available worldwide. Doug Savage

Jetstream Genetics: Gameday x Legacy x Rolan

At 3045 gTPI, Moka is one of the highest rated bulls with semen available, and this new-release sire tops the Jetstream line-up. ‘Interest has been very strong since his release on proof day, with his gTPI, type, udder composite and high PL, he stands out as a very attractive option available to every one with no contract restrictions,’ comments Roger Turner from Jetstream. The sire of Moka is the very successful sire of sons Gameday, who is sired by Frazzled son Big Al and out of a Blowtorch dam. The maternal line behind Moka traces through Legacy-Rolan-Jedi-Commander to Tiger-Lily Uno Leah VG-87, a finalist in Holstein International’s Global Cow competition. Moka is 1008 NM and combines +860lb milk with +.24% fat and +. 11% protein, with +2.01 gPTAT and 2.01 udders and 5.6 PL with 2.4 livability and 2.2 mastitis. Expect moderate size with angular frames and well attached udders. Protect for short teat length. Moka is A2A2 and qualifies for all export markets.

Sired by the proven sire Delta-Lambda, Eye Candy is out of the reigning All-American Jr.2 from 2021, Ms Ladyrose Caught Your Eye VG-89. Unix daughter Caught Your Eye will likely be out to compete this year as she is fresh again. This is the Blackrose cow family with the three nearest dams to Eye Candy being All-American winners. The second dam is a VG-89 2-year-old Doorman with the third dam being the 95-point Goldwyn daughter Rosedale Lexington. At +3.38 gPTAT and 2.80 gUDC, Eye Candy offers a beautiful linear profile but is not extreme on stature which is appealing to a wide audience. He is +15 conformation in Canada, and is also BB for kappa-casein. ‘Eye Candy also has a Doc free pedigree so he offers pedigree diversity as well,’ comments Kevin Jorgensen. ‘He is amazingly balanced which makes him ideal for our Showcase program. I would protect him slightly on daughter fertility and also on milk volume.’ Eye Candy is +301lb milk +.11% fat and +.05% protein with 2552 gTPI. Backed by three generations of All-Americans, Eye Candy boasts a very special pedigree indeed.

VALIAN T MITCHELL ROLEX: 94HO19988

St Jacobs: Mitchell x King Royal x Monterey

Rolex is a Mitchell son from the Roxy family, his dam being a VG-87 King Royal from an EX-92 Monterey, a VG-86 Mogul and then Morningview Super Roxy EX-90. ‘His dam sold through the county sale as a 10-month-old heifer for very little money as she wasn’t a big show heifer,’ explains Brian Behnke. ‘However, her balanced genomic profile proved that the right genes were present and she produced a tremendous bull.’ Rolex has a well-balanced profile with good type, production and health numbers. He is under 3 on stature with correct rump, legs and teat size and placement. ‘Rolex is a very correct bull in his rump and leg structure. He’s a bull that tracks straight and stands comfortably,’ adds Behnke. ‘He does carry the H2 Haplo type but other than that he’s a very easy bull to use.’ The proof shows +958lb milk with +.05% fat and +.04% protein along with 2.81 gPTAT.

Rolex is available around the world in both conventional and Sexcel semen.

Parfect has been one of the most internationally popular genomic bulls of recent times, and he and his early sons are among the few on the top-200 list with over 2.00 gPTAT. How ever, the shining star with the highest gPTAT on that top-200 is Parfect’s younger brother, Pazzle. His combination of elite gTPI of 3059 with 3.07 gPTAT and 2.92 gUDC makes him a rare find indeed. Pazzle is also positive for DPR, A2A2 and BB for casein, and free of Doc blood, making for a very intrigu ing option. ‘We have used Pazzle as a sire father for both traditional matings and for our Showcase program,’ explains Kevin Jorgensen. ‘I also like the fact that he combines two of Siemers’ best cow families: The Roz family on the top side and the “P” family on the bottom. We are honored to have 5 sons of Siemers Lambda Paris EX-91 in our program, including Pazzle, Parfect and the Hanans sons Peve and Partake.’ Pazzle has +614lb milk with +.24% fat and +.09% protein, and in addition to the high components he also excels for mastitis resistance. Protect for high pins and straight legs.

“Talking to veterinarian Doug Evans and the team at the Udder Comfort™ booth, we got more regimented in our use of Udder Comfort and saw SCC drop from 200,000 to 120,000. We started making sure we sprayed every fresh udder after each milking for the full 3 to 4 days after calving and watched our somatic cell counts respond. We saw SCC on our fresh cows drop right down collectively by 10 to 12 days in milk,” says Kyle Hirt, Mithva Farms, New Woodstock, New York.

“We were already using Udder Comfort for 4 years on swelling in fresh cows and mastitis. We knew it reduced edema faster and better than anything else,” Kyle adds.

Springhill Dairy in Ohio: Powerhouse for a Number of Dairy Breeds

Over the years the Lang family’s Springhill farm has played a prominent role in advancing the genetics of various dairy breeds, especially Holstein and Guernsey. This historic farm has been owned by the Lang family for over 200 years. Here is a look at some exciting projects under way at Springhill.

The Lang family has farmed at Big Prairie, Ohio, for 200 years. Chris is the 7th generation of the family to have owned this land on which Sprin ghill was established in 1819. For much of the 1900s this farm was a stronghold for Guern seys, but in 1974 two Holsteins were added to the herd, one of which became the dam of the great foundation cow Langacres Elevation Hope EX, whose descendants still form the dominant cow family today. By the early 2000s, Springhill had a 450-cow Holstein herd but in 2007 Chris purchased an outstanding Guernsey cow and the influence of that breed has steadily grown again since then. With the sale of the large com mercial herd in 2018, the key breeding animals moved into a smaller compost pack barn with some box-stalls which was built on the original Springhill property. Business partner Dan Basse, who has long been involved with Guernsey’s, joined the ownership of the operation at that time. Today the 80-cow herd is comprised of 25% Holstein, 70% Guernsey and 5% Ayrshire.

THOPE

The current Holstein contingent includes six EX-94-point cows, three of which are from the Hope family. Springhill-OH AW Cicely EX-94 is backed by a 93 Mac and 91 O-Man and is a 10th generation home-bred EX. She has Unix and Delta-Lambda heifers. The second Hope family member is Kingsmill Goldwyn Jewel EX-94, who has daughters by Doorman, Delta-Lambda and Windbrook. The Windbrook is Springhill-OH Wind Jada, who is also scored EX-94 and was Grand Champion of the 2019 Mid-East Summer National and the 2019 Ohio State Fair. Jada has Doorman and Pharo daughters. These cows are still being flushed and form the backbone of the Hope family today. ‘We were very fortunate to get started with such a consistent transmitting family with Hope being just the second Holstein calf born on the farm: That was 1975,’ explains Chris. ‘The family has regularly produced those wide-bodied, dairy frames with well attached udders, very functional cows that are exactly the kind we breed for. Windbrook Jada really is

a good example of what the family does best.’ It was the width of frame and the well attached udders that attracted Chris to purchase two Doorman daughters, both of which have devel oped into 94-point cows. Md-Maple-Lawn Doorm Cory is out of Silvermaple Damion Cam omile EX-95. The other is Fraeland Doorman Bonnie who is out of Fraeland Goldwyn Bonnie EX-95 and then the 2x Australian National Champion Fairvale Jed Bonnie. Purchased from Mike & Julie Duckett in 2021, Bonnie has twice been nominated All-American in milking form. The two Doorman’s are the foundation cows for new families at Springhill.

IVF PROGRAM

The herd is milked through a double-6 parlor. ‘All breeds are mixed together so we select for func tional, healthy cows that can compete in each of the breeds,’ explains Chris. Cows are rotationally grazed from April through till early fall, weather permitting. Calves start out in individual pens but then move into group housing where heif

ers learn to deal with competition. TMR is fed to all animals except for the young calves that get dry hay, grain and milk. Long-time employee Marshall Overholt is the farm manager and has a strong passion for the Guernsey breed. Marshall grew up showing Guernseys and is a driving force in preparing and presenting Springhill cattle at the shows. This has mostly involved Guernseys but also Holsteins. Over the past 12 years Springhill has had over 100 All-American nominations. Marshall’s wife Kayla is also involved at Springhill, handling a lot of the accounting and promotional work. Sprin ghill maintains a busy IVF flush program with embryos from both the Guernsey and Holstein breeds exported to various countries around the world. One example is that the very pop ular Goldwyn Jewel now has Delta-Lambda heifers in Australia.

JAZZY

The foundation cow that reintroduced the Guernsey breed to Springhill was Dix Lee Tiller Joke, purchased for $23,600 at the 2007 Guern sey National Convention Sale. Joke has proven to be an ideal foundation cow with her daughters including Springhill Mentor Jazzy EX-95, Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo in 2017. Joke has had 6 sons that have sired All-Ameri can nominees, with her last son Jaguar being in active service at Select Sires. ‘One honor that Jazzy’s Grand Champion title in Madison quali fied us for is that one of her daughters has been used for the first Mike Hellenbrand scholarship award,’ explains Chris. ‘Mike (City Slickers Farm) was always a great supporter of the youth show so they have established a scholarship in his honor. The first winner was a girl from Wisconsin who was here to pick from Jazzy’s daughters in the spring, and I believe the heifer will be sold at Expo this year. We are proud to be involved with such an award.’

AYRSHIRES

2019 saw the arrival of some Ayrshires at Spring hill adding further color to the herd. A Lochinvar

daughter from the famous Palmyra Berkley Ruth EX-94 was the first purchase and another Pal myra bred cow followed. The contact with Palmyra has continued to grow. ‘We have tried to have a sale every couple of years,’ explains Chris. ‘We are currently organizing the Founda tions of Palmyra and Springhill Sale to be held here at the farm next May, so that will be a very exciting time for everyone here. We will be delighted to host that sale.’

BUCKEYE MILKHOUSE

Another project that is now moving forward is the construction of a processing plant for dairy products that should commence operation later this year. ‘We’ve been planning this venture for quite some time and it’s now finally coming to fruition. It’s going to be called the Buckeye Milkhouse and is located 30 miles north of here,’ explains Chris. ‘The venture is a partnership with another farm. Along with the processing plant it will have an on-site store plus agri-tourism.’ Springhill will not only have innovative market ing of genetics but will now also have a creative way to market the milk too. l

From August to Adler: Travel Along Through Adolf Langhout’s Rich Photo Archive

Since the early 1990’s, Adolf Langhout of A.L.H Genetics has been a regular visitor to North America, searching out top genetics to supply to his many clients in Europe. Adolf has always taken a camera with him on those many trips and has now amassed an extensive archive of pictures of famous Holsteins. Here we share a behind-the-scenes look at many of the famous names of the breed. Time travel, along with Langhout and his camera, and witness the development of the D-R-A August family, among others.

The story goes that after his first American trip, he returned with only cow pictures. According to Adolf Langhout, that is not entirely true. ‘In the beginning, everything left an impression. To be sure, the Holsteins, but I also photographed large trucks, skyscrapers… until the newness faded.’ Decades later, Langhout photographs museums, remarkable architecture, design and interiors of well-managed dairy barns from which customers with building plans can benefit, numerous friends and connections in breeding... and their very best Holsteins includ ing many famous brood cows. Langhout’s photo archive contains numerous images of breeders and Holstein cows that have laid the foundation for today’s Holstein cow.

SUBLIMINAL

For each of the fourteen photographs pre sented, there is a story. In general, Langhout states: ‘In barns, or at shows and sales, I only

Tphotograph the animals that stand out to me. Such as Loyalyn Goldwyn June EX-97 (photo 1). She is the only cow at Ferme Pierre Boulet in Quebec that I photographed during my visit in August 2019.’ Two years later, during the World Dairy Expo 2021, June placed third in the pro duction class, immediately behind Blondin Goldwyn Subliminal EX-97 (photo 2) who was photographed in October at Budjon Farms in Wisconsin. ‘Subliminal really appeals to me as a through-and-through dairy cow. Years ago, I was alerted to her pedigree, the Blondin Skychief Supra family, at the several thousand cow dairy of Cowtown Holsteins in Vermont. The purchase of a few female Subliminal embryos is a guaran tee for a beautiful and productive two-year-old.’

Of Farnear-TBR Aria Adler-RC EX-96, the cow that won the production class during the World Dairy Expo last year, Langhout has several notable pictures in his archive. More about her in a moment.

AUGUST

Cookiecutter, Regancrest, Sandy-Valley, Siemers; on these and many other farms where the Hol stein cow of today has been created, Langhout has photographed influential Holsteins. ‘Earlier you saw, like with the BW Marshall daughters, a few cows with sloppy udders from time to time. That, as well as mediocre udder health, has been entirely bred out of elite herds. At Siemers, for example, among the thousands of ultra-produc tive cows, you rarely see one with a faulty udder.’

Besides the progress of the Holstein breed, we also see the young generations of breeders growing up. ‘Here, in the office at Regancrest in Iowa (photo 3), I am standing beside Brolin Regan. He will be the new Frank Regan, his suc cessful grandfather who stands beside him.’

Langhout enjoys visiting farms in the American Midwest, such as Kamps-Hollow in Wisconsin. There at a later age, Langhout saw Clover-Mist Alisha RC (photo 10), originating from an ALH mating of Prelude and Clover Mist Augy Star RC, an EX-94 Jubilant daughter of D-R-A August

RC EX-96 (photo 9). Thanks to Kamps-Hollow Altitude RC EX-95 (Durham-Alisha/photo 11) and her daughters Apple (12&13) and Goldwyn Aiko RC, the August family would step-by-step develop into one of the most influential Hol stein pedigrees right now. Langhout has several photos of MS Apples Aria-RC EX-92, a powerful Destry daughter of Apple from whom he has imported nearly 200 embryos already. Even more photogenic is Aria daughter Farnear-TBR Aria Adler-RC EX-96, the McCutchen who in October won the production class at the World Dairy Expo ahead of June and Subliminal. Lang hout photographed Adler various times: For example, on April 29, 2019 (photo 14), the day that Adler scored EX-95 at Farnear Holsteins in Iowa. That day Langhout was photographed with Adler and her owners, the Simon and Rauen families: Families where Langhout is con sidered “one of the family”. For Langhout, after three decades of travel, photos of famous Hol steins are increasingly taking on the character of family portraits. l
