Each year the theatre department puts on a series of plays, each of which requires a poster as well as one seasonal poster. In this particular season, the theme of female conflict presented itself in each of the plays. Because the plays worked together so well, I wanted to create a design that would show how each female narrative, although independent of the others, plays into the female psyche on the whole. Geometry can be defined as the shapes, lines, and planes that make up relative arrangement of the parts of something. Using geometric shapes and lines, I tied meaning into a specifically posed photograph to represent each play and the season as a whole in a metaphorical way.

Individual experiences of women make up the female psyche. Geometry can be defined as the shapes, lines, and planes that make up relative arrangement of the parts of something. Every geometric shape and position of the model’s body works together to represent the storylines of each play as well as the full season that focuses on stories of female conflict.

IASIS Healthcare rolled out a new program to allow patients better access to their providers, to information about appointments and prescriptions and an overall better ability to stay informed and take action about their own health. All of these things are what make up an individual’s health. Essentially what the patients get is better access and knowledge about their own health. I came up with the concept of staying connected to your health and represented this by showing how IASIS Healthcare’s patient portal is connecting both doctor and patient, minimizing the line between you and your doctor, and creating an outpouring of services and knowledge at your fingertips.

This rollout was personalized for over a dozen hospitals and medical groups for regions nationwide. Imagery, color, languages and materials were personalized to communicate with each individual audience in more meaningful ways.

In a graduate school project, we were given a quote by an artist that was meant to lead to a visual narrative. My quote was by Andrew Wyeth: “I can’t work completely out of my imagination. I must put my foot in a bit of truth; and then I can fly free.” Wyeth’s work has a great deal of raw truth and action. After researching Wyeth’s work and life, I was inspired by his honesty often coming from painful and real-life scenarios. The famous “Christina” is plagued with Polyneuropathy, crawling home through a field. I looked for areas in which truth was of utmost importance, and a process of being real was necessary. Addiction recovery fit the quote perfectly. I was inspired to create a celebration kit and event that would allow people in recovery to celebrate each stage of their successes in a playful but also meaningful way, using the quote assigned as a foundation.

Wyeth painted the famous Christina’s World among other realist works in a time when Andy Warhol, Pop Art, and abstractionists were king. His work has a great deal of raw truth and action. After researching Wyeth’s work and life, I was inspired by his inspiration often coming from painful and real-life scenarios. I attended an N.A. meeting with a friend in the program to gainiinsight into the needs and process of those in addiction recovery. I was able to share ideas straight with the audience to hear feedback from those the project would actually affect.

After learning more aspects of a recovery program from visiting an NA meeting with a friend, I learned that a few of the first steps of the program involved learning that you cannot move forward alone and that finding a foundation in a higher power is important. She also told me that getting to a place of childhood play and happiness was a goal of the program.

Every piece of the kit is representational. The kite itself is a tetrahedron that can be continually added onto throughout the ongoing journey of recovery. The kite is meant to be built, just as you are meant to put work into addiction recovery. The intention is to build the kites together, having each other sign “I can fly free!” or a name to see that teamwork is involved in the recovery process. The spool of thread which represents a foundation, or “putting your foot in a bit of truth” before the kite can fly free, is built to hold the tokens earned through the stages of recovery. The kite is made from simple household items such as straws, tissue paper, and string to make this an easy project for any person in recovery to get involved in. The quote above held in the top lid of each kit’s commemorative box, is intended to be kept as a keepsake and reminder of progress.

“Changing the face of homelessness”

The quote above is a mantra for Home Street Home Ministries, a local non-profit that works to aid the homeless and educate the public on the plight of homelessness. This pro bono project started with an overhaul redesign of their website. While containing a lot of information, the site did not convey the story the group is trying to tell and was cluttered with unnecessary visuals and crowded information, making the message difficult to understand. The first step of this process was identifying the story that needed to be told: it’s easier than you think to fall into homelessness, they’re not that different from the rest of us, there’s something Home Street Home is doing to help, and you can be a part of it. Their tag line and overall mission is centered around understanding the homeless as people. I decided to draw attention to the real people, with real lives and family and let the website generally tell the intended story as the viewer scrolls down the page.

IDENTIFYING ISSUES + IMPROVING EXPERIENCE With the previous website, there were many issues within usability, readability, the ability to find information, and an overall form and function of the site. The site needed to be redesigned from a clean slate. By meeting with the founder of the organization, who on a limited budget had designed the site himself, I was able to identify the goals and needs of the site to incorporate into the new design.

TELLING A STORY The main 2 goals are to educate the public and help the homeless. In order to do both in an engaging way, I wanted to tell the story I was told by the founder to engage viewers in something that is genuinely affecting individuals in a real way. Focusing on the organization’s phrase, “Changing the face of homelessness one face at a time,” I engage the viewer in a step by step story offering calls to action at every opportunity, and making the story personal.

For a graduate school project, I was tasked with redesigning Barcelona’s metro wayfinding system, including a printed map and direction application. The design process began with research of the city’s history, personality, culture, hot spots, cuisine, and overall vibe. Everything from the patterns and colors used, to the shape of the metro lines and map folding system, as well as the logo itself was inspired by the information gathered during this process.

01 02 03 04 05 A MAP THAT TELLS A STORY The roof lines of the Parc Guell inspired the shape of the metro lines. The waves of Casa Milรก, Casa Battlรณ, and the back of La Iguana along with the idea of metro lines inspired the logo. The texture and interior ceiling of the Sagrada Familia inspired the background pattern for the map itself. The fold of the map is called the Miura fold, which is extremely easy to fold and unfold quickly despite its intricate design, making it ideal for tourists, those most likely to be using this metro map. The inspiration for the folding design comes from the pattern of Las Ramblas and overall architectural designs of the city.

All these pieces come together to create a map which represents a vibrant Mediterranean city of water with a lot of personality and artistic heritage.

Based on the brand and design of the new folding map, I designed an accompanying application which allows the user to easily find the same top attractions found in the print version, as well as current location and general directions on all lines of the metro system. To test the needs for this application, I used various wayfinding apps for public transportation and noted what was helpful and what could be improved upon based on ease of use and functionality. Since I have traveled to Barcelona before, I thought about what would have been helpful when I was there, such as walking directions from stops to sites, pop-ups of what site is nearby, and information you may not know as a tourist such as the Ramblas is a full street and not one specific site.

IDENTIFYING ISSUES + IMPROVING EXPERIENCE The user experience starts with an arrow directing where you are now and the closest lines to you at the bottom. Each line coordinates with the printed metro map for ease of use. Upon opening the app, the user automatically has reference to search, add money to their credits that can be used on the phone, directions, adding the stop as a favorite location, inserting an end destination for directions, and seeing all the lines at once. KNOW WHERE YOU ARE KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING Once directions are selected, the user knows at which stop they are located at all times by a blinking circle around the dot representing where they are currently. The line color is reflected as a primary color of the page to make the user experience as easy as possible to know which line they are on at all times.

The IASIS Healthcare company hosts an annual Chairman’s Award Gala to honor employees within the IASIS network from across the country who have shown exemplary service in their work and communities. An event announcement sets the tone for the event, and this invitation and poster needed to exemplify collaboration and high honor. The corporate structure is built upon the intricate inner-workings of teams and the service taken on by individuals. Together this shapes the framework of a company. This type of “above and beyond” service demonstrated by leadership and staff is permeable to the whole network, making it valuable to the company itself, just as the purple dye is shown spreading throughout the intricate folds of the larger system. These visual metaphors are appropriate to this gala that celebrates the importance of the service and dedication of its employees.

Corporations are built on structure but generosity and kindness can permeate that structure when exemplified by members of a team. This is the type of attitude which the Chairman’s Awards seeks to promote and honor. Purple has been used throughout history as a color for kings and those in honored positions.

In addition to the metaphors described above, the design of the poster and invitation allows the information to literally stand out from a flat background and utilizes a color used throughout history to show positions of honor and respect.

Clinic Partnership NEW CLINIC OPENS ON T H E CA M PUS O F PH O ENI X S UNS
The new Multi Specialty Clinic opened on the campus of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury basketball teams, and began a partnership with both the team and the urban Phoenix community. The goal of this campaign was to inform the public that the clinic was opening in the heart of the city and partnering with a well-known and loved team. The campaign included many versions but held an overall modern vibe with imagery of the team’s mascots in the clinic’s doctor coats as well as young professionals with views of the clinic in her glasses reflection. This imagery shows the partnership between the team and the clinic as well as setting it up as a place of convenience and modern technology for young professionals in the city. The scope of this campaign ranged from billboards, train wraps, and signs on buildings, to handouts, digital ads, emails, elevator signs and more.
