Open space encourages collaboration and flexibility. Spaces allow users to interact in different ways, as well as have access to private space. Transform an existing 1920s-era office building in downtown Oakland into innovative work space to improve access to opportunity, participation and influence to underrepresented communities.
Mindvalley Headquarters IDEAWORKSHOP
Inspired by the jungle gym playscape and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, the Mindvalley Creative Office features a multileveled workspace bathed in polychromatic light that shifts throughout the day. This project features simple but innovative components to counteract a sedentary lifestyle, including standing desks and pull-up bars. Composed of both quiet and contained spaces to suit user needs.
The Wing
The Wing is a growing community of women across the country and globe, gathering together to work, connect, and thrive. The Wing’s mission is the professional, civic, social, and economic advancement of women through community. The Wing currently has 13 locations from London to Chicago to LA. The Wing incorporates co working spaces, cafe areas, places for children, and lactation rooms.
Built by women for everyone, The Riveter is on a mission to change the future of work for women. This means tough conversations, clear actions and key leadership on core diversity, equity, inclusion, and advocacy and civic engagement on local and national issues. We see a world in which equity of opportunity is a reality, not merely a promise, and we strive to work with others who share our ideas. We are inclusive of all.
Gather Seattle is an inclusive community of creatives, designers, makers, foodies, entrepreneurs, and storytellers based in the Pacific Northwest. We use the table as a platform for inspiring creative conversation and building connections. We are a supportive network and a welcoming friend group with a mission to support one another in creative pursuits that enhance the vibrancy of our city. We believe strongly in the importance of making personal connections around the table.
Idea Mapping
What is the discrepancy? What happens between college and work? Higher # of women in higher education
These don't add up Wage Gap
We don't demand what we deserve
Gender Inequality Men choose more lucrative career paths
Low % of female CEOs
Why do we settle? Fear Rejection Intimidation Lack of confidence
Why should we settle for something we don't want to do just to make more money?
Project Proposal
Need?
There has been a gender wage gap in America for decades. Despite being statistically higher educated, women are continuing to be left behind in the workplace. I want to create a place for women to go to get resources that can help them work towards equality and empowerment in their professional lives.
Innovation?
This center would occur in a post college setting, different from typical women's centers. This center will also be open to the public, with men being included too.
Program?
RISE will need to account for its employees as well as visitors, including offices, networking spaces, meeting places, etc.
User?
Women who are seeking resources to pursue their professional goals in an existing workplace or looking to start their own business.
Issues?
Finding what makes women feel comfortable and empowered in a space.
Research?
Statistics on education by gender, company demographics, surveys
Literature Review
The Roots of Workplace Gender Inequality
Mommy guilt- some women are still being held to the tradition of the women staying home and taking care of the family.
Interpersonal Mistreatment of Women in the Workplace Over half of women are subject to behavior mistreatment. Workplace inequity negatively impacts the sense of community. The anticipation of inequality or the act of inequality both contribute to lower numbers of women in certain professions. More likely to be harassed if they have a male supervisor or are in a male dominated organization
Women at Work: Make Yourself Heard
Women think it's too boastful to say "I" when talking about an accomplishment. Women apologize too much. The way someone should speak in authority is attributed to how a man speaks. Power of the informal Show up early Speak up and give others the room to speak Listening is a valuable skill
Girls,
Stop Apologizing
Women as Space/Women in Space: Relocating our Bodies and Rewriting Colors used, materials, patterns and objects spread around-- suggests in a sense that women are one homogeneous clump of pink-lovers Both gender and space are similar in reflecting social norms into the lived experience of the everyday. Women are associated with traits of nurturance, cooperation, subjectivity, emotionalism, and fantasy, while men are associated with objectivity, impersonalization, competition, and rationality Anthropomorphic measurements are based not only on the size and proportions of the male body parts, but specifically on the white European male. This subdues the female body and makes it clear that the space was not designed for her to use. Women find themselves needing more privacy and safety in public spaces.
Architecture of Gender Pink is something that has been
weaponized against women. Pink is absent from traditional corporate work spaces and "is tied into who belongs in the workplace." At The Wing people take up space, sit back in the chairs, and are themselves. Many women who are new moms need to lug their breast pump to and from work. Designing safe and equitable spaces will cause behavior to follow.
Interior Habitats: The Theory of Prospect and Refuge Biophilia- human's innate need to connect with nature. Prospect- open space with opportunity to interact and be seen Refuge- private space A place of refuge in a workplace may be a quiet room to take a phone call. Prospect and refuge theory provides environments that we are preconditioned to prefer based on instinct. The use of prospect and refuge theory can help us create spaces that allow the user to fluctuate the type of social situation they are in. People can be exposed to opportunities to communicate and meet new people in a prospect situation or have the chance for privacy and reflection in a refuge situation. Prospect- meeting rooms, networking spaces, cafe Refuge- lactation room, networking spaces, call rooms, offices

Interview
Beth Walter, Senior Vice President, Jabil Beth was the first woman at Jabil to achieve a vice president role. To support building a gender-balanced future at Jabil and in our communities, Beth has launched a Jabil Joules initiative aimed at educating, mentoring, and encouraging networking among females. This program is now being launched regionally to increase its reach and support for Jabil women. We are at an important junction: millennial influence is helping level the playing field and redefine what work is. She had the right company culture to succeed, not many rules, was able to take things into her own hands. She was not worried about other females until she realized she is the exception not the rule. Knowledge is power. Progress happens one person at a time. Men and women are socially different, women are quieter. Lack of confidence leads to us creating a barrier against ourselves. Diversity and inclusion network, diverse teams make better decisions. Balance of opinion. Create a ripple effect. Hope that you influence one person who will influence another. Not one silver bullet.

Users can claim a seat for the day to conduct their work and have the opportunity to speak to and collaborate with others using the space. Coworking will give many women the opportunity to make connections and learn from those around them.
