Kris Yenbamroong - Night + Market x Gonzalo Guzmán - Nopalito Kris and Gonzalo are two chefs from different backgrounds, cultures, and cuisines. Growing up on two different continents would create the assumption that their philosophies about food are widely different, however, the gap between Thai and Mexican culture is bridged as illustrated by the philosophies of these two chefs. Kris is influenced from his time spent in Northern Thailand while Gonzalo is influenced by the humble way of life in his village in Veracruz, Mexico. Both of these chefs aspire to make the cuisine that they grew up with accessible to others. Gonzalo set out with the goal to remember and honor the way things were done when he was growing up, while adding the influence of an ever changing food world. Kris stated, “I didn’t create anything on this menu, I’m presenting recipes as they are found in Thailand.” Both chefs are bringing the flavor of their past to a new life. Night + Market and Nopalito give patrons a taste of what each chef learned from their families, translated into the vibrant American cities they now call home. Even people who have never experienced authenticity like these chefs are able to offer, can start to understand what the culture of their home is like. Kris observed that the way people were naturally eating and drinking and socializing was inherently Thai, it was casual and fun and not precious. The motto of his restaurant is to facilitate drinking and fun-having amongst friends. When these chefs come together to create a fusion of their philosophies, these are the statements that are at the heart of why they both wanted to share their food with the world: Kris takes food he has an intense personal connection to in Thailand and translates those dishes and the party ethos behind them and Gonzalo uses his restaurant to share those recipes that have the deepest impressions on his heart and live on in his memory most intensely since being away from home.
Latitude - bridging the gap.

There are many restaurants in the surrounding area, however they all close at 10pm or 11pm. The bars close at 3am. There is a need for a chill food place that is open late, especially for SCAD students.

Spatial Development
Center kitchen design to represent a central bond fire. People who did not come to the restaurant together will sit next to each other to take part in the cooking of the food. Creating an interactive experience through mingling and possible interaction with the cooking process.
Graphic patterns of the branding will be incorporated into the printed material but also into the space. Combo of bold graphics and a cleaner look to represent the melding of two cultures.
Consider the use of material as a way to create the warm feeling of participating in a bond fire.

Design Statement This pattern is based on my restaurant with a fusion of the dishes of a Thai and Mexican chef meant to celebrate the bridging and melding of cultures. Both cultures are very vibrant and lively and I wanted my graphics to embody the spirit of those cultures mixed with the ethos of my restaurant, “sitting around a bond fire with friends.
