Curriculum Vitae (CV)

erwin karthana Bachelor of Architecture (S.Ars), Universitas Udayana

Hi,

I am Erwin. I fell in love with architecture since my first time studying architecture on campus. Thenceforth, I have been passionate about exploring the world of architecture by joining competitions, seminars, workshops, reading books or articles, and learning things related to architecture, such as how to put ideas into a design, how to think critically, how to see things in many perspectives, and so on. During and after completing my studies, I had several working experiences as drafter and junior architect. In particular, I was involved in my recent work experience as junior architect, its is “Misool Airport” project in Misool Island, Raja Ampat, West Papua. There is a motto that I believe is "Do the best and let God do the rest". I hope that I can learn more about architecture and go through the process of pursuing my dream to becoming an architect.

NATAH Contemporary Art Center Architecture Final Project / Thesis

Bali is known for its arts, culture, traditions and strong values. This “Contemporary Art Center in Gianyar, Bali” is designed to respond to the development of contemporary art in Bali by becoming a space for the society to do contemporary art creativity and also balinese cultural activities. However, in line with the development of the contemporary art, the society (especially the young generation) are now starting to leave the culture and values that exist in Bali. Therefore, as a contribution to preserving Balinese local wisdom, a traditional Balinese architectural concept called "natah” is used in this design, which is interpreted in a contemporary style.

BALINESE LOCAL WISDOM

The population of the younger generation is starting to lose awareness of the preservation of Balinese local wisdom and cultural activities.

Implementing Balinese local wisdom concept to the design in a contemporary way CONTEMPORARY B A L I N E S E ARCHITECTURE

Gianyar is known as “The City of Arts” in Bali

Balinese Traditional Architecture as a local wisdom

The balinese people in ancient times often do their daily activities outside the building space named “natah”. The activities such as temporary reception room, agricultural drying room, religious ceremony, children's play room, planting room, etc. Besides as a space for activities, natah also has a natural function as a space for air circulation and sunlight to create comfortable space in the building.

Why “Natah” ? Mountain

Natah has a very important meaning for the life of the Balinese people, because natah is a reflection of the social life of the community, both socio-spiritual, socio-economic, and sociocultural. What makes “natah” interesting is because it’s empty space (not a building), but it is full of meaning, besides being physically multipurpose

However, due to the increase of population density in Bali, Balinese people nowadays are starting to forget about natah as a necessary space, for reasons of limited space, space efficiency, and so on. Therefore, this project can be an embrio of awareness for the community about the importance of natah as a based on ordering space, and the beneficial in both philosophically, functionally, and ecology as harmony with tropical climate.

Kampung Jawa Riverside Center (3rd Prize Winner) Gaung Bandung 2018 “Sayembara Tanpa Batas” by Institut Teknologi Bandung

In Denpasar Bali, there are several transition zones which have an impact on the emergence of inequality both spatially, socially and economically. One of the transition zones that has all three issues is Kampung Jawa. Kampung Jawa is a small settlement that has been known by the Balinese people, especially Denpasar as a center for buying and selling goats. As the name suggests, Kampung Jawa or "Javanese Village" is inhabited by a majority of people who are descendants from the Javanese region who settled in Denpasar from the past until now. Kampung Jawa has been known as a slum and also the center of the goat trade in Denpasar. Kampung Jawa Riverside Center is a project that make an inclusive space in access to the transition zone that reviving the village’s potential and redesign it to be a collaborative public space that contains some function such as goat market, productive garden, fishing park, pujasera (foodcourt), and community space.

Every living things need a space for shelter. Birds with their nests, and humans with their homes. SANCTUARY comes as an interpretation of the need for a safe space to ensconce, and relaxation for both humans and the birds. This SANCTUARY Waterfront BirdWatching Platform is designed as a shelter for visitors to enjoy the natural wet-land panorama in Nansha Bird Park, and also as a camouflage for visitors, so they would not visible by the birds, and the birds would not feel threatened by the presence of visitors (people).

MASSING CONCEPT

The concept that we use for this SANCTUARY is by analogizing the flying bird into it's nest. We take the basic shape of the nest itself, which is a circle, to be used as the basic shape of the layout. Then, the bird's wings inspires us for this bamboo installation mass form.

Misool Airport Misool Island, Raja Ampat, West Papua

The Raja Ampat Regency Goverment has designated the tourism and fisheries sectors as leading sectors which are expected to be the main sectors of economic growth and movement in this area. However, Raja Ampat is currently the only leading tourist destination in Indonesia that does not yet have an airport that is suitable for commercial and private aircraft. This condition is one of the main problems faced in encouraging the growth of tourism and other economic activities. The Detailed Engineering Plan for Misool Airport is divided into 3 planning phases based on the land acquisition area. This is done referring to the concept of the “growth pole”. In Phase 1, there are around 30 buildings and facilities were designed and detailed in the DED drawings, such as : Passenger Terminal, Operational Office, Administration Office, Pump House / Water Source Building, Main Gate, GSE & Workshop, Garbage Burning, Two Wheel Park, BMKG Office, Waste Handling Land, Car Parking, BMKG Park, Mosque, Development Land, Official House (Type 36/100 & 45/120), Crisis Center Area, Sports Facilities, Polyclinic, Employee Canteen, Ceremony Ground, Quarantine Office, Main Power House, Guard Post, Mosque, PKP-PK Building, Security Office, Plaza, Monitoring Tower, DPPU Land, Driver Waiting Room Building, Airnav Office, and Cargo Terminal.

Pujungan Villa & Agrotourism Tabanan, Bali

Pujungan Villa and Agrotourism is an agrotourism area located in Tabanan, Bali, which accommodates various activities such as agrotourism, agriculture, jogging, wedding & photoshoot, enjoying view, culinary, staycation, glamping, community gathering, etc. From these activities, there are several building functions designed such as villas, glamping, jogging tracks, lobbies, restaurants, and viewing decks. The concept of agro-tourism in this area is agro-tourism for traditional coffee plantations typical of Tabanan, so clients expect this area not only to have villas for tourists to stay, but also to be an interesting experience for tourists to get to know more about the unique coffee farming process. We also propose an additional facility, namely Glamping, where glamping is one type of lodging that is currently a trend, so that it can attract young people to be able to stay at this facility as well.

Mondel’la Coffee, Eatery, and Bar Denpasar, Bali

Mondel'la Coffee, Eatery, and Bar is a cafe on Jalan Trijata, Denpasar, which is a renovation project with 2 floors. Mondel'a is a cafe that previously stopped operating, but the client wanted to rebrand the cafe. The concept that the client wanted for Mondel'a was a homey hangout place for young people. Arad Design Studio then develops the client's wishes and translates them into design elements that are more attractive than the existing conditions, so that they can help increase their sales. In general, some of the design styles applied to Mondel'la are curved shape elements and the dominance of white color to give the impression of a wider space. In the facade design, we use polycarbonate material plus lighting as a focal point.
