COACH'SCORNERANDMGAUPDATE

COACH'S CORNER

The sand bunkers at Carolina Trace are full of sand and really looking great! After some of the downpours we had in July, making them look this good, so quickly, demonstrated a great effort from Eric (our superintendent) and his staff! Wow! Nice work! Now, what’s the easiest way to get out of them?

Greenside bunkers:

Widen your stance

Put the ball in the middle of your stance. Hold the entire club (do not choke down)

Hinge your wrists early in the backswing, and feel like you were lifting the club upward, instead of around your body

The downswing should feel like you are casting a fishing pole from the top of the swing

Keep the club face aimed at the target during the follow through instead of turning/rotating your hands

Fairway bunker:

Take a normal stance at the golf ball

Shift this stance toward the target, which would then have your ball positioned more towards the back of your stance.

Choke down 1 inch on the golf club

Look at the front of the golf ball, closest to the target side of the sphere Swing

Best of luck with your sand, bunker play! Although many of us like going to the beach, August should be pretty hot so you might want to stay away from the sand as much as possible!

MGA

Don Imbriale

The Men’s Golf Association (MGA) continues their tournaments and is about halfway through the season

Congratulations to Ron Conti, the winner of our second major of the year – the President’s Cup After an 18-hole stroke play qualifier, Ron bested 3 opponents in match play the following week

Other recent winners include the team of Ron Gasho, Jerry Keith, Ralph Martin, and Tony Palmer in our 123 event, and Lee Connor who won our Flag Tournament.

On Friday August 4, 2023, we have our 4 clubs and a putter event with a shotgun start at 8 AM on Creek.

Our Chicago Points event has been moved from Saturday 8/26/2023 back to Friday 8/25/2023 due to a conflict with the CTCC Club Championship. The MGA Chicago Points event will be a shotgun start at 8 AM on the Lake course

You can still join MGA for our remaining events Dues have been reduced for any new member joining Contact a member of the MGA board for details (Dave Travis, Ron Gasho, Mike Kelly, Rick Eschbach, Don Imbriale) We play in different format events usually with other golfers we might not ordinarily get to play with, then convene in the Jones Pub after each event for beer and soft drinks Entry fee for each event is $10, with $7 being paid back in shop credit to those finishing “in the money ” (40% of entrants)

In addition to golf, tennis, and arts & crafts, some of the other fun activities included free swim, relay races, sprinkler fun and a magician!

Thank you to Diana Stepanik, who chaired 2023 Camp Trace, Megan Simpson, who agreed to chair 2024 Camp Trace, our junior counselors and all the volunteers that made this such a wonderful, safe and special camp

For new club members, this is an excellent opportunity to get to know the people in the community and to have a lot of fun doing so Please consider joining us in this exciting and fun event in 2024 Registration packets will be sent out the end of February 2024, to anyone interested
