WELCOME GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dry and hot weather continues to be the theme here at BlackHorse, and really the Houston area in general. Many of you are playing in the morning and then posting up in the A/C for the afternoon. I can't say I blame you. July was a fun month golf wise, including Play with the Pro. I had a great time with my group. The purpose of that event was to get our team of golf professionals on the course with the members so that we could get to know each other and I think we achieved that. Play with the Pro returns this month! The latest update on the arrival of our new golf carts is mid to late August. I know all of you are looking forward to that, and we share in that excitement. Yes, the rumors are true! The plan is for those to come with GPS Systems that you can use to check your yardages, keep score, and much more. This is an awesome addition to our new fleet, and something I believe adds to the experience of playing a round here at the club. I thoroughly look forward to shipping our current carts off to their next adventures. If anything changes, I will let you know, but that is the current outlook on new carts. Now is the time to sign up for "The Giddy-Up" Member Guest Tournament in September. This event is going to be a first class country club like experience for you and your guest. As we have been communicating, it will be many steps above any tournament experience you have ever been apart of at this club. It is hard to believe that four years ago, this club had not hosted an official member-guest tournament, and this year we are going to be hosting what is likely to be the best in town. Our team is really looking forward to putting on this event, and I really hope you are a part of it.

MEMBERSHIP MEMBERSHIP UPDATE Neil Sherrod If you have not had a chance to look at the August calendar, I encourage you to take a look. It is exciting for me to think about where our membership was four years ago and to see the strength of it now. Our staff is working diligently to offer more programming throughout the month with a focus on getting our members more involved. The new couples league has been a lot of fun and I know the guys had a good time playing in Play with the Pro! Those programs are back for August as well as some new events, including POWERBALL! I spoke with Graham and it sounds like the members of his last club really enjoyed this when he was there so I know he is excited to bring it to the Horse. I am still really excited about bringing the level we are taking this year's member-guest tournament to. The Giddy-Up at the Horse is going to be an awesome experience for you and your guest.

Our team is starting to sure up some components of the event that we will be announcing in the near future. A few things I can tell you is the gifts that you and your guests get to take home this year are really nice. Our friends at FootJoy and Winston Collection are going to take good care of y'all on that front. The other part of this year's event that I am really looking forward to is The Giddy-Up Awards Ceremony, which will feel much more like a party than an awards banquet. We are working on a few special things for that night, but you and your spouse are going to have a great time that night celebrating a great week of fun. I know Graham also mentions it, but I am really excited about the new range attendant position on the driving range. The vision was centered around providing a better service to all of you and protecting the value of your membership. We are aware that non-members have spent time hitting on the member-only range and this is just one of the things we will be able to improve with this position.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE David Franks Earlier this month, the South course was closed to allow us to do much needed cultural practices. We started off by verticutting (vertical mowing) all greens in two directions. We then aerified greens with 1/2" hollow coring tines, removed the pulled material with a core harvester, and top dressed with 20 plus tons of sand. We used most of the week to work sand into the aerified holes and applied a slow release potassium granular fertilizer to aid overall plant health. The process went very well. While the greens will remain sandy and a little bumpy for this week, I believe they will be rolling well again soon. Other tasks completed during the closure included: verticutting all fairways in two directions followed by a double mowing; tees on 10-18 were aerified with our Shockwave slicer, followed by verticutting in two directions and mowing in four directions. We will attempt to complete the front nine tees in the coming weeks. Cypress Tree Company was out during the closure and raised canopies on trees around South #1 green complex.

Pictured above is the green on South #10 during the most recent aerification. These cores have good nutrients and serves as a great filler for areas around the course. You may have notice some areas where we dumped these cores, which was a deliberate effort to improve those spots. Lastly, we had a contractor out to root prune the South course (pictured left). This is a process where a tractor with slicing attachments slice two trenches 8-10 inches deep along the drip line of trees lining the course. This cuts/prunes these roots that are encroaching into the roughs, tees, fairways, and even greens that steal water and nutrients from the turf. This will be very beneficial to the South Course. Unfortunately, their machine had mechanical issues and only completed holes 1-9. They will be back out this month to complete the back nine. My email address is dfranks@blackhorsegolfclub.com and feel free to contact me with any questions. Thank you for your membership and dedication to BlackHorse Golf Club.

You may or may not have noticed a new welcoming face at the range. The new range attendant position is something we are truly excited about getting started here at BlackHorse. This position gives our staff yet another opportunity to provide a service, while giving us more time to get to know our members better!
