GENERAL MANAGER

We are currently experiencing another scorching summer in southeast Texas, with temperatures frequently surpassing 100 degrees and a high heat index. Despite the heat, we choose to live here, so might as well continue playing golf!

Last week, we hosted a successful Member Mixer and appreciated seeing a different side of our members outside of their typical golf persona. Looking ahead, we are excited to organize more social events throughout the year, starting with trivia night on August 22nd We hope to have a great turnout and a fantastic time

As you may know, our club has been undergoing various improvements, including recent parking lot repairs and resealing Although the project has taken longer than expected, we anticipate that the finished result will be aesthetically pleasing, especially with the addition of bull rock to the new fence area and islands

We are thrilled to introduce the new Scratch Golf League, catering to those interested in straight up golf While most of our events utilize handicaps, we recognize the demand for this type of league based on feedback and conversations

In exciting news, we have rebranded the Member Guest event back to the BlackHorse Derby, scheduled for October 27th - 29th The committee has been hard at work, creating an enticing and enjoyable event that we believe all participants will appreciate, especially with the event's new timing in the fall

COURSE MAINTENANCE

It’s summertime in south Texas. It's hot, but we were blessed with a little rain to end the month off. The courses are doing well despite the weather and our staff has done an amazing job. If you see them, feel free to thank them for all they do. We couldn’t do any of this without them.

July was a busy month for the maintenance team. We were closed for eight days total to perform as many disruptive cultural practices as we could. I am happy to report we were very successful. All greens were vertically mowed to remove thatch (dead turf material), grain (growth pattern/direction of the turf), and organic material (dead turf material deeper in the soil profile) and mowed smooth afterwards. Next, they were aerified with ½ inch hollow coring tines, about 4 inches deep on 2 inch by 2 inch spacing. The pulled cores (which are made of more thatch & organic material) were cleaned from the greens and allowed to breath. We then top dressed all greens and applied and granular potassium product (potassium aids in overall plant health and is usually deficient in the soil) and dragged all this into the holes and watered. A few rolls with our greens rolling unit and they are now on thier way to healing. Outside of the greens, all tees, collars, approaches, and fairways were vertically mowed. There were a few fairways on both courses that got a much more aggressive vertical mow (meaning deeper into the soil profile). They were North 4, 5, 10, 12, 13, & 18 and South 3, 8, 10, 14, & 18. We felt that these holes required a little more removal than the others at this time

Lastly, our Shockwave slicer unit aerified holes on North 1 & 3 and South 11, 16, & 18 We are thankful for the time to perform these practices and your understanding All these steps are necessary in the long term health and performance of the turf The North course is well on its way to healing and the just completed South will be right behind In between the closures, a lot of routine detail work and irrigation repairs were completed

For August we have Dryject aerification This process will be less disruptive and help to firm up our greens and get them in the best shape possible as we approach Club Championship and Member Guest

I will have another monthly maintenance update at the end of next month, so stay tuned My email address is dfranks@blackhorsegolfclub com and feel free to contact me with any questions Thank you for your membership and dedication to Blackhorse Golf Club

The Championship will be contested September 9-10.

What a thrill to compete against Sherry Martin in the ProDown Challenge. Neither of us brought our best game, but the Membership brought it in terms of spectating. Between those of you on the course and those on the back patio, I could feel every eye watching and didn’t deliver my best swings, but did just enough to hold on to my winning ways Sherry nominated Spencer Pyles, so I look forward to making it 10-0! Good luck, Spencer!

This month we have Superintendent’s Revenge This event is one that has been here before and has made a return to the calendar after some years off I am excited to work with David on some fun ideas for this tournament This tournament is Saturday, August 12th at 8 a.m. Click the date on the calendar page to register!

PHOTO OF THE MONTH - AUGUST

Typically, we would award photo of the month to a member that submits a photo taken here at the Club, however, this photo represents the types of personal relationships that this game and this Club help to establish. Nineteen BlackHorse members went on a golf trip and Kyle Homrighaus sent this photo to us afterward. We are glad to have them back and was great to see many of them at the recent Member Mixer!
