WELCOME GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Summer is officially here, and we could sure use a little rain to help cool us down! Our maintenance team has been busy as we completed aerification on both courses in June, on top of trying to keep as much moisture on the golf courses as possible during this dry stretch. The golf courses are playing firm and fast, and we are very pleased with the recovery on the greens so far. Please make sure to stay hydrated while enjoying the Club this summer! We appreciate your continued support hope to see you at the Club soon. Thanks for being a Member, Reese McCall General Manager

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE John Freeman Hot, Hot, Hot, and Dry. June 2022 brings typical effects from La Nina. We are currently experiencing extreme summer temperatures and drought 45 days before normal. Our challenges are maintaining a balance of irrigation cycles and hand watering to keep turf alive. Some areas where the soil is as shallow as 1" on top of clay will burn out. We will maintain viability by extensive supplemental watering in the early morning hours. Spinning sprinklers and using hoses will be necessary for the next three months. We use different soil penetrants to help retain water in the localized dry areas. We are also using large solid tines to aerify these areas to help hold water on the tops of mounds. As of June 16, all fairways on the Member Course have been solid tine aerified. We have completed the front nine fairways on the Tournament Course and will finish off the back nine fairways and turn to Member Course tees and finally the Tournament Course tees. Our crew has done a tremendous job of ensuring all details are perfect for enhancing expected recovery. Overall, we are pleased with summer weed control. We have applied a combination of pre-emerge and post-emerge herbicides to every square inch of the Member Course and will continue making the same application to the Tournament Course. Difficult grassy weeds like dallisgrass, vaseygrass, and bahiagrass are being hand-treated. It usually takes 2-3 applications, 10-14 days apart to eliminate these three weedy grass plants. We are also continuing our work to repair bunker liners and add new sand, specifically addressing the bunkers on Holes # 1, 5, 8, 9, 13,14, and 18 of the Member Course.

GOLF PRO SHOP GOLF RULES & TIPS Bob McHugh Golf Tip of the Month Swing a weighted club to keep the golf muscles loose. Start the club ahead of the impact area and sweep it back to the top of your back swing using your larger muscles, legs, shoulders and chest. Pause at the top-it is good to look in the mirror at this point to not only see how good-looking you are, but also to check that your weight has transferred, your left arm is extended and that you made a good shoulder turn. Now, begin the downswing by transferring your weight to the left side from the ground up. Continue your swing through the impact zone achieving a proper position. (Please note: your weight should be on your left side with hips and shoulders facing your intended target. Repeat this for 10 to 15 minutes a day and you will keep your golf muscles loose. Tips for Improving Pace of Play Choose the Right Tee Players should play from a set of tees best suited to their driving distance. TEE IT FORWARD. Ready Golf When a player is at the ball and ready to play, they should go ahead and play. Think Ahead As you walk or ride up to the next shot, start assessing the situation and get a feel for the shot, wind, and the yardage. Riding in a Cart Drop your partner off at their ball, then ride ahead to yours. Switch drivers if necessary Playing Slow If your group is behind pace and a group playing behind you is playing faster, please let that group play through.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Meet David & Chelsea Overhuls! With July being all about family, fun and community activities, we want to take a moment to recognize Mr. David Overhuls and his wife, Chelsea. The Overhuls joined Golf Club of Houston after moving to Fall Creek in 2014 and love having a Golf Course, practice area, and gym in their backyard. We asked about their most memorable shot or round; David replied, " My most memorable shot was my first (and only) hole in one on number 12 at Walden on Lake Houston & my most memorable round was my first time breaking 70." Chelsea said her most memorable shot was making an eagle during the Couples MemberGuest Tournament. They also spoke about their personal experience at the Club, stating, "Between first steps, parent-child tournaments, and bowl after bowl of macaroni and cheese, we have watched our kids grow up at Golf Club of Houston. We love the golf but enjoy all of the family activities and social events more (Fireworks on the Fairway, Breakfast with Santa, Trunk or Treat, Easter Brunch, etc.)." David and Chelsea do all they can to positively impact the local community. Both volunteer in the children's ministry at Second Baptist Church - North, and David is also the coach for two Texas Heatwave youth soccer teams – 4u boys soccer and 8u girls soccer.

WELLNESS FITNESS Is hydration really that important while I play golf? According to Siobhan Donofrio, the official nutrition consultant for the LPGA…Yes! Fluid loss of as little as 2% of body weight in adults, and 1% in youths, can affect the body and the brain’s ability to function and has a negative impact on play. Golfers of all ages and ability levels need to be adequately hydrated to maintain strength to hit the ball, maintain focus throughout every shot, and have enough energy to finish strong. What should I drink to stay hydrated? Drinking plain water replaces fluid losses, helps to cool the body, and improves blood circulation, which we need to move nutrients and oxygen throughout the body and the brain. On a cool day, when you don’t sweat, you may only need to drink plain water. However, if you sweat a lot playing golf in hot and humid weather, you lose both water and electrolytes (particularly sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium). These electrolytes are important for fluid balance, energy level, and muscle activity. What about sports and energy drinks? Sports and energy drinks contain sugar and/or caffeine which may not be needed by most golfers. If you feel you need a boost of energy, get a snack such as fruit, trail mix, granola bars, whole grain pretzels, peanut butter crackers, or a sandwich. Small to moderate amounts of caffeine may help improve concentration and energy for some golfers, but too much caffeine can be detrimental causing headaches, shakiness, irritability, nausea, and gastrointestinal issues.
