WELCOME GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE It is hard to believe that May is already here. The first four months of 2022 have brought some exciting times for Golf Club of Houston. We are excited in the direction that we are headed with several updates to better serve our Members. Construction at ArrowFit, our new fitness center, is going well and all new state of the art fitness equipment has been ordered. We are pleased to welcome Alicia Ritzenthaler to the team as our new Membership Engagement Coordinator to better serve and communicate with our Members. We are currently receiving bids to begin the Clubhouse refresh that we communicated at the beginning of the year and anticipate that project to begin shortly. It is a great time to be at the Club and we thank you for being a Member.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE John Freeman

We have begun the process of reclaiming some of the green surface on #18 Member Course. Check out the pictures from the early 2000s compared to now. We’ll mow the grass at lower and lower heights throughout the weekend and continue our cultivation practices through next week. Hopefully, we’ll be able to add some new pin locations in May if the turf transitions how we want it. You’ll start seeing similar markings on tees, approaches, and fairways in the coming weeks as we look to reestablish mow lines on areas that have been altered by the mowers over the last year.

Superintendent advice for the week: Struggling with weeds? Try raising the mowing height of your lawn mower to the highest setting. This will put the least amount of physical stress on your grass and help it outcompete weeds for sunlight. In closing, we are sending out a TEXAS SIZED thank you to our former Director of Agronomy, Brian Buckner, for his time at the Golf Club of Houston and wishing him the best of luck moving forward at Bentwater Country Club.

GOLF PRO SHOP GOLF RULES & TIPS Bob McHugh Golf Tips of the Month For better course management (and to speed up play), swing mechanics, putting stroke and short game techniques are often the focus of honing a golfer’s game. While these are important aspects to the game, many players forget that golf ultimately requires good course management in addition to a strong skill set. Get the Ball on the Ground Near the Putting Green Putt when you can, chip when you can not putt, pitch the ball only if you have to. Tee the Ball Up on the Correct Side of the Tee Box A right-handed player who fades the ball (left to right ball flight) should tee the ball up on the far-right side of the tee box. This will open the fairway, creating a larger area to play your tee shot. A player who plays a draw (right to left ball flight) would benefit from playing from the left side of the tee box. If You Are in Trouble, Get Out When you find yourself in trouble, the smartest play is often the safest one. We’ve all tried to be the hero by trying that spectacular shot through the trees to make a miraculous birdie or par. Often, your ball ends up hitting the tree and winds up in an even worse position. Instead of trying an impossible shot, play the ball in a way that will help you recover, saving more strokes during your round. Don’t Always Hit the Driver Too many golfers automatically grab the driver on a par 4 or 5, which may not always be the best decision for their game. Instead, I recommend playing the hole backwards. Try picturing your shot into the green and work forward to that point. For example, if you are not going to go for the green on a par 5 in two strokes, hit a club off the tee that makes it easier to lay up to a preferred yardage for hitting into the green. Even the best players in the world have bad days. Learning how to properly manage those bad days will help keep your scores in balance, and your experience positive. All players are required to pair up in golf carts!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT At Golf Club of Houston, we would like to begin our beautiful Spring season by recognizing and offering a warm welcome to the newest additions to our membership family. Dave and Lucy Krueger welcomed their second daughter, Avery Helene, on December 29. In addition to baby Avery, Dave and Lucy are also proud parents to big sister Kennedy, two and half years old. Congratulations to the family! Sarah Branfman and Steve Bond welcomed their first child, Theodore, on March 14. Theodore is beginning his golf lifestyle already and is rocking the golf-style look at his young age. We are excited to greet him on his first visit to the club. Congratulations to the family! Thank you to both families for sharing the beautiful pictures!
