COURSE MAINTENANCE
John Freeman
October is my favorite month for golf course maintenance We will fertilize wall to wall We will have the first application of pre-emerging herbicide applied to every square foot of turf and landscape areas We will monitor daily soil moisture and apply irrigation only when necessary Preventative fungicides will be applied as planned Weekly applications of nutrients and soil bio-stimulants will be made to all our putting surfaces We will slowly remove plant growth regulators from our programs This will be done by cooler soil temperatures and shorter day length
We were finally blessed with a few days of much needed rain in mid-September Soil was flushed and grass began to recover once soil temperatures began to drop from high 90s We are applying fertilizer wall to wall to allow our turf to store up carbohydrates before cooler temperatures and shorted day length shuts down the natural phenomenon Most soil scientists will tell you to fertilize your turf now if you want it to come out strong next spring I agree with this profound statement Make sure your lawn is fertilized as soon as possible to allow for optimum health before it goes dormant
2023 will go down in record books as one of the most severe years in history as far as drought and heat extremes This year, the Texas Gulf Coast was not spared The drought has taken a toll on trees on both courses I have counted over twenty-five trees, pines and hardwoods that will have to be removed this winter Very seldom in our area do we record irrigated soil temperatures at 100 degrees at a depth of 1 inch This year it began in August and continued through the first week of September
Rainstorms always leave our courses in disarray Lightning strikes are dangerous and can blow up an entire tree as it did to an elm tree on the right of path on Member Course #6 It can also lay over an 80-year-old water oak as it did to the left of #16 green on the Member Course It also leaves small limbs, gum balls, pinecones, pine needles and leaves scattered over our three hundred plus acres of turf Cleaning up is time consuming and takes away from normal mowing practices Please be patient with our crew as we work through the storms
Heavy rain always washes out our bunkers Heavy silt deposits are the norm This must be skimmed and removed Sand must be pushed from bottom to top on all slopes Compacted sand must be redistributed and cultivated multiple times to restore for play Please be patient as we get all back in play We always focus first on Member Course, then Tournament Course and finally all practice areas

Pro Tip Golf Tip
Use your hybrid to play a bump & run You should set up similar to putt; stand closer to the ball and grip down on the club You should also hit the ball similar to a putt, keeping a narrow stance and still wrists
This shot is particularly useful when you would be hitting into the grain The hybrid bump & run is much more forgiving and would also work when your ball has come to rest against the collar Lastly, if you are short sided at the bottom of a run-off area, use the hybrid to bump it into the hill

Apple Cinnamon Pancakes with Bourbon Infused Maple Syrup
Ingredients:
1 1/3 Cup All Purpose Flour
1 TBS Baking Powder
2 TBS Granulated Sugar
1 TSP Salt
1 TSP Ground Cinnamon
4 TBS Butter ~ Melted *will need more butter for cooking
1 Cup Buttermilk
1 Egg
2 TBS Vanilla Extract
3 Honey Crisp Apple ~ Peeled, Cored, Diced
2 TBS Salted Butter
2 TBS Brown Sugar
1/2 TSP Cinnamon
Bourbon Infused Maple Syrup
Steps:
In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon and set aside Melt 4 TBS of butter In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract Add in butter and continue to whisk
Slowly mix in the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients With a spatula, stir in 1/2 of your diced apples (reserve the other half for your apple topping)
In a large pan, heat a dab of butter over medium-high heat. When melted, add in a 1/3 or 1/2 cup scoop of batter. Cook until golden brown on the bottom. Batter on top will start to bubble also indicating it’s time to flip. Flip pancake and cook for another minute or until pancake is golden and cooked. Add another dab of butter and repeat process!
To make your cooked cinnamon apple topping, heat a saucepan over medium heat add butter. Mix together the other half of your diced apples, 2 TBS of brown sugar, and 1/2 TSP Cinnamon. Cook for 3-5 minutes until apples are nice and tender
Build your pancake stack, topped with the deliciously warmed cinnamon apples, and drizzle with bourbon aged maple syrup Enjoy!

The Events Department hosted two of our favorite golf events with long-time partners, University of Houston, and NRG Park It is always a pleasure to host the Dave Williams Cougar-Am bringing together boosters, coaches, and players to honor legendary coach Dave Williams We had great Member support of the event kudos to Men’s Coach Jonathan Dismuke and Women’s Coach Lydia Gumm on another successful outing NRG Park hosts one of our longest-running events their annual Customer Appreciation Golf Tournament bringing together industry partners for a day of fun and food Hosting on a Monday to utilize both of our courses, our friends at NRG Park always provide a Mobile Pro Shop for participants This unique offering combined both Nike and Callaway merchandise to give the golfers popular options at the best pricing possible Each player was provided with a pre-loaded merchandise Gift Card and helped themselves to their own hand-picked items Thank you to Savannah Bolden and our golf shop staff for their coordination in magically converting our Terrace into a shopping destination for the day

Seasons have changed, should your eating change too?
The short answer is yes, but what should change?
It’s a Gut Feeling
We all have communities of microbes in our gut called our microbiome. These microbes help us digest food, absorb nutrients and activate the production of neurotransmitters. The gut microbiome, in recent years, is now being considered an organ of the human body.
Timing is Everything
Coming into fall, we can see changes in the climate with the new crops that are ready to harvest as others fade out. Get ready for pumpkin everything! As the food supply changes, our bodies need to change to digest and absorb nutrients from these different foods.
Our gut can detect seasonal changes in preparation to better digest foods of that season. Research suggests that our gut microbiome has evolved to be highly sensitive to environmental factors, including seasonal changes. This also suggests that eating strawberries year-round is not optimal, even if the stores are carrying them
Try These Fall Foods
Apples
Beets
Brussels Sprouts
Eat Seasonal & Eat Local
Cabbage
Cranberries
Figs
Kale Pears
Persimmons
Pomegranate
Pumpkin
Sweet Potato
There are many health benefits associated with eating seasonal foods But don’t forget, foods taste better when they are in season Also, they are more nutrient dense – they do not need to be frozen or require additional processing As always, you can buy local and help support your local farmers
