NEW MEMBERS MEMBERSHIP UPDATE Brian Smith Membership Relations Squish, Squish, Squish. We’ve heard a lot of that this year already as we’ve had one of the wettest Springs on record. As they say, April showers bring May flowers and if you’ve looked around the clubhouse grounds, you’ll see the blooms that were planted this Spring. Our grounds crew has also done an excellent job on repairing and updating the drainage system in bunkers on holes 3, 4 and 6. You’ll also see some new faces in Member Dining and on the course as we've welcomed 10 new members since May 1st. In March CCN welcomed the Cole Family to the club as Social Members and you may see a lot of them this summer as they’re a family of 6. Brett, Lauren and their 4 kids Harper 8, Theo 6, Lucy 5 and Sloane 4 came to CCN as they were looking for a pool close to their home, activities for the kids and place to interact with other members. Lauren grew up in Singapore but her and Brett met while in college at Miami University, a Miami Merger as they said. I know there are plenty of Miami Alumni here at the club so make sure to say hello. Brett works WPAFB as an Engineer and Lauren is a Nurse at Miami Valley Hospital. They were referred to CCN by a friend and member that spoke highly of the club and as a great place to entertain and bring your family. Thanks to the Cole family for joining the CCN Family.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE Kevin Butts Director of Course & Grounds

The golf course is shaping up well for a very busy June and July. Our crews have been out working hard to repair irrigation leaks, finish up some remaining drainage and sod projects and working hard to cleanup the course to make it play well. We have been working on tuning in equipment and getting our mowing frequencies back in shape. We have verti-cut and top-dressed greens aggressively in the last month which has improved the putting surface tremendously and helped improve green speeds We were also able to finish up a deep tine on our fairways which has helped us firm up and dry out our fairways. Mother Nature has lightened up on us as well and we are now able to control moisture on all playing surfaces a little better. We are continuously working to improve playing conditions and plan to keep moving the needle forward at CCN. We are excited here at maintenance to have some great weather to get some projects done and get the course back on track after a tough spring weather season. We hope to see everyone out playing golf and come enjoy CCN!

GOLF GOLF UPDATE

Dave Miller PGA Head Golf Professional

The May rain finally stopped and set us up for a great June where we had numerous golf events. The LGA was in full swing with their daily games and had a 9-Hole Mixer plus a Ladies Guest Day. Our Ladies Team Play Ladies hosted and blew away the other participating private clubs for another dominating victory. The MGA is also off to a great start having their daily games and a record participation in the Men’s Spring Stag. Our Couples 9 & Dine has grown into a full blown fun golf social event, again having more participation than ever before. The PGA Jr League Team coached by our Assistant Golf Professional Alec Velasco is off to a great start and will be in contention again for a big season. The Men’s Thursday Night League will be coming down the stretch, but no worries the fall session will be here soon. The Club Championship is going to be a great event to end the month of June and results will be in the next Newsletter. Thank you to the entire membership for your support and participation in all these events. We will continue to provide you quality golf events that is fun for all golfers. The July golf calendar is packed with more great events. LGA Mixers, The Men’s Invitational, The LGA Member-Member and The Couples 9 & Dine. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT How do you describe Tom Boots? What makes him tick? Is he the first member at CCN? Is he a better golfer than his brother Ted Boots? These are questions I set out to answer on Saturday when Tom agreed to be interviewed for this month's newsletter and Member Spotlight. I guess if we're going to get to know someone we should start at the beginning. Tom grew up with his brother Ted in Anderson Indiana between Indianapolis and Muncie. He attended K-12 in Anderson and then spent 1 year at Purdue University before enlisting and spending 3 years in the Army in Landshut Germany. He was in the 11th Armored Cavalry Tank Division. While visiting Paris he met his first wife Jill waiting in line to see the Eiffel Tower. He held her spot in line like the gentlemen he is while she had to step away. Although unplanned they met up that night while touring Paris and ended up at Moulin Rouge. She was from England and they eventually married and had 2 kids together and were married for 16 years. After the Army Tom went back to Purdue and graduated with a BS in Industrial Economics which lead him to a 41 year career with Merrill Lynch. It was Tom's career with Merrill Lynch that brought him to Dayton. Tom started his membership at CCN in 1990 when his wife Suzanne saw that Jack Nicklaus was building a course in Beavercreek and told him to join the club. He was the 5th member at the time and put down $10,000 in 1990, 1991 and 1992 to join before the club opened officially in 1993. He said they used to only play 5 holes because that's all there was at the time. Tom won the first Club Championship over Bob Miller with a fortuitous bounce off the rocks on the 18th hole which lead to his victory. He was then invited by Lee Rinker, the Pro at CCN at the time, to play in the SODA tournament with Lee which they won in a playoff on the 10th hole. Tom's favorite hole at CCN is number 16 (from the tips) and he's made a hole in one on number 13 at CCN. He's also had a Hole in One on number 2 at NCR South and number 6 at Brookside in Columbus. I asked if he's golfed with anyone famous and he said Lee Rinker and his brother Ted Boots. Ted's golf team won the Big 10 championship 3 times while he was at Purdue. PAGE 6

Tom and his second wife Suzanne have been together 39 years now and the last 7 haven't been easy as Suzanne has a stroke and lost the use of her left side. While I was getting ready to sit down with Tom and told a couple other members what I was doing, everyone of them spoke highly of Tom and how well he's taken care of Suzanne over the last 7 years since the stroke. Kind of fitting as when I asked Tom to tell me one golf story at the end he chose to tell one about his wife, Suzanne. Years ago Suzanne, Devon Danielle, Kathy Curl and Diane Stafford competed in a qualifier at Yankee Trace to play in the Babe Zaharias Tournament at Firestone South. Well they qualified and the qualified by 1 stroke, that 1 stroke? It was Suzanne Boots' Hole in One on the third hole at Yankee Trace which led them to play and compete in the Babe Zaharias Tournament at Firestone South later that year. In the last month I've played golf with Tom, talked with Tom and interviewed him and if you're like me you've found a friend and a great man. Thanks for your 30-plus years with CCN!

FITNESS PRO TIPS & RETAIL UPDATE Alec Velasco Assistant Golf Professional Give your backswing a power boost! As you start the club back, make it a goal to get your hands as far away from your right ear as possible and maintain that width all the way to the top of your backswing. A wider swing arc automatically fuels a faster downswing and eliminates the chopping action that causes pop-up drives and slices. Make sure to stop by the Pro Shop and take a look at the new CCN Headcovers from AM&E Headcovers. Show your CCN pride when you show up to play or maybe Stars and Stripes or the Ohio Flag are what you're looking for? Whatever your style Dave and Alec have what you're looking for.

EVENTS TESTIMONIAL Stacy Black Director of Catering/Events

"I couldn’t have asked for a better team to help make my daughter in law’s baby shower the success that it was. It looks as if Stacy and her team had only one goal in mind and that was to make us feel special. We could not be more thrilled with the way the party went on. Three great qualities of Stacy were, flexibility, personal touch and prompt communications. They had things done precisely the way we wanted. Even though they were working extremely hard, the whole team looked so happy throughout the occasion. Stacy was personally there not only during the planning period but also while the party was taking place, making sure that everything was going on according to schedule. I cannot say enough good things about the way Stacy, her team and CCN have worked hard to make our event a great success." - Ratna K. Palakodeti, MD, FAAFP CCN Member
