Our speaker for our May meeting is Jimmy Haire, photographer and historian, whose program centers on Sanford history in general and the Cumnock Mine disaster specifically The Egypt Coal Mine, in what is now Cumnock, was the site of a massive explosion on May 25, 1925 that killed 53 miners A series of events and tragedies at the mine located on Deep River, near Sanford, has convinced people near and far that the mine is jinxed, and entrepreneurs think twice about mining this particular coal, despite the fact that experts have estimated that at least one million tons of good quality coal still lie hidden there Mr Haire will share with us details about the timeline leading up to the event and its aftermath The disaster is part of a display at the Railroad House Museum, which includes a model replica of the town and the coal mine before the explosion Plans are in place to commemorate the event for the 100th anniversary approaching in 2025 This promises to be a compelling presentation, so you won’t want to miss it.

The purpose of the Women’s Club is to “promote friendship and communication among the women of Carolina Trace Country Club and to benefit the local community ” Membership is open to all women of Carolina Trace Country Club and it is never too late to join Annual membership dues are $20 00 If you wish to join, you may deliver your check, payable to “CTCC Women’s Club”, to Billie Zulich at 92 Northridge Trail. COACH'S CORNER

Many amateur golfers are using their sand wedge around the green for 20 foot to 20 yard chips and pitches Let’s take a look at why that might not be the best club selection for anyone that has a handicap higher than 12

Using the same club as the pros is not necessarily the best approach.

Due to the amount of loft that a sand wedge has, precision is necessary for hitting the face of the golf club. Lack of such precision tends to lead to many sculled or thin shots that fly off the other side of the green

A longer swing is necessary to hit the ball with a sand wedge compared to a nine iron Longer swings tend to incorporate wrist hinge, and other unnecessary angles, which lead to less probable success

Periodically, pros will even use a hybrid for chipping from lies with very little grass, almost like a putter, but with a bit more loft.

Speaking of putters, Arnold Palmer taught Jack Nicklaus to use a putter from off of the greens at the British Open (fun fact)

Hence, try using a club that works for you instead of the club that “ you ’ re supposed to use ” there is no such thing

STRAWBERRY SEASON IS HERE

Spring brings fresh strawberries!

We are excited that strawberry season is in full swing We have been blessed to support Barbecue Creek Berry Company this season! They have wonderful strawberries that are perfect for eating right after a quick wash

Some facts about strawberries:

They hold a lot of water which makes them a great snack that will help fill you up and rehydrate you at the same time

They are low in sugar. If you are diabetic, using strawberries as a snack will not spike your blood sugar

They have vitamins and minerals that are essential to daily life

By consuming strawberries from a local source versus a grocery store, you are consuming more nutrients and your consuming the ultimate freshness of the berry

If you have never been picking at a strawberry field, it is definitely something to try You are supporting a local farmer, enjoying the outdoors, and trying something new for yourself and your family

FITNESS UPDATE

Happy May from CTCC Fitness! Exercise increases overall health and well-being, but did you know it has direct correlation to busting stress? Cortisol, widely known as the ‘stress hormone,’ has important roles in our bodies, including regulating blood pressure and blood sugar, helping to control the sleep-wake cycle, supporting your body’s metabolism, and regulating the stress response. However, when cortisol levels are too high in the body, we may experience weight gain, atrophy (muscle loss), weakness or fatigue, high blood pressure or sugar, and ultimately the sensation of stress

Exercise combats these high levels of cortisol and promotes hormone regulation When we are active (playing sports, walking/running, golfing, lifting weights), the ‘happiness hormones’ are released: dopamine and serotonin Serotonin helps enhance the production of dopamine and block the production of cortisol. Consistently moving our bodies promotes a healthy balance of these hormones, which can lead to weight regulation, improved sleep, reduced anxiety or depression, and reduced stress levels The next time you experience stress, try to get yourself moving!
