GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE

May is here, and so is the sunshine! After a fairly rough winter, we have enjoyed warmer temperatures and more sunlight in the past couple of weeks which has allowed the golf courses to begin to pop John and the rest of the Agronomy Team have been working hard to prepare for the growing season in the summertime conditions

We finished up a busy April with our one-day Member Guest and the grand opening of the brand-new Member only Golf Shop We are continuing to finish up some smaller projects and details from our clubhouse refresh, but we are ecstatic with how everything has turned out and I hope that you will be able to enjoy the club all summer long I want to thank everyone who took the time to complete our recent food and beverage survey I am excited about the positive changes that Alex, Chef Moses, and the rest of the Culinary Team are working on implementing very soon

Thank you for being a Member.

COURSE MAINTENANCE

In April, Golf Course Maintenance becomes extremely busy and aggressive with Agronomic practices Winter weeds are entering the final stages of their life cycle Summer weeds are continuing to germinate Our team has been working diligently to ensure we have post emerge herbicides where needed We are also on a mission to apply multiple light applications of pre-emerge herbicide to our entire property Our goal is to be weed-free from January to December Overall, we have been moderately successful The number one winter weed in the whole world is Poa Annua (annual bluegrass) We have kept it out of putting surfaces and, in most short, grass In some areas, rough grass could be better The poa germinated in thatch and has survived without having any root structure in the soil We will get aggressive with aerification and thatch removal as soon as possible

Winter has not been kind to putting surfaces in our area Many of my friends in the industry are experiencing the same challenges I am We are working daily to enhance the recovery of both Tif-Eagle and Mini-Verde We are increasing the frequency and rates of nutrients and bio-stimulants Additional practices to improve oxygen and water movement are also critical to recovery We are micromanaging these practices We are sodding areas where necessary As of April 20, we still need warmer nights and consistent sunlight to enhance overall course conditions

The carbon fertilizer is doing what it always does Salts are being buffered, and tees and fairways are much healthier Recovery is coming along nicely I was disappointed with the manufacturer of the Viatrac 3-3-3 They decided to produce a pellet instead of a crumble, and it took over a week to melt down vs a couple of days with the crumble I let the manufacturer know that the product would not be used again in the pellet form

We are still in line for bunker sand for both courses The manufacturers in Arkansas and California have yet to give a delivery date as of mid-April We hope to be notified of a date soon and will keep you updated once we receive more information

I want to extend a big "Thank you" to Mark Bond He modified six wood duck boxes in our storage area and has installed them in the swamps and back side of lakes on the Tournament Course Watching the Wood duck population grow in our water features will be nice Every bluebird box is occupied, and the Martin houses are fully occupied Thanks again to Mark for this nice touch

Employee Spotlight Get to know Efren Cardenas

Efren has been with Golf Club of Houston for twenty years. He began his career at the Club as a cook in the kitchen. For five years, he was able to take care of our Members every time they came in to dine. After spending those early years in the kitchen, he was promoted into the Men's Locker Room, where he has continued to provide excellent service to our Members. Efren is not only a dedicated employee, but he is also very detailed. During the years of the Shell Houston Open, Efren made sure to know all of the players' preferences when they would come into the Locker Room. The same level of detail he provided the PGA Players, he continues to provide our Members. He takes pride in learning all he can about our Members to make their visit to the Club a Remarkable experience. Efren is also a proud father to an adult son. He loves the game of golf and is a great golfer. Thank you, Efren, for your years of dedication to our Members and happy twenty years!

ARROWFIT

Would you like to improve your posture and spinal health?

Consider a Strength Training Exercise Program.

It is estimated that for every inch the head moves forward from its natural position, an additional 10-12 pounds of pressure is added to the spine. Meaning, that if someone is slouching with their head 2-3 inches forward from its natural position, it could add 20-36 pounds of pressure to their spine.

Over time, this can lead to strain and discomfort in the neck while leading to more severe issues such as spinal degeneration and herniated discs

Strength training exercises that target the neck extensors and flexors can help strengthen the muscles that support good neck posture Stronger muscles can help maintain proper alignment and reduce the risk of neck pain and stiffness

Improving strength in the back and core can also help improve overall posture and neck posture When the muscles in these areas are stronger and more balanced, it can support proper alignment and reduce strain on the neck muscles.

Stress and tension can contribute to poor neck posture. Strength training can help reduce stress and tension throughout the body, leading to improved neck posture.

Improving range of motion: Strength training exercises that involve stretching and mobility work can help improve the range of motion in the neck and reduce stiffness. Strength training exercises can also make it easier to maintain good neck posture throughout the day.

Incorporating a strength training exercise program that targets the neck and other related muscle groups can effectively improve neck posture and reduce the risk of related pain and discomfort.

Have questions about your posture or strength training? Reach out to the ArrowFit training team to learn more.
