WELCOME A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER On April 28th from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM The First Tee of Tucson will be in the lower parking lot collecting donations of old golf equipment. This is a great opportunity to complete a little spring cleaning while assisting a very good organization. Please donate any used club, balls, shoes, gloves, and gently worn clothing. If you are unable to make it to the Club that day, feel free to bring any donations to the bag room prior to the 28th. Within the next few weeks we will begin to resod some of the bunkers edges on The North course where the sod did not establish well. This project will take approximately three weeks and will consist of stripping away dead sod, preparing the edge for new sod, and replacing with new Bermuda sod. Please do not enter or exit bunkers through newly sodded areas. We apologize for any inconvenience. Be on the lookout as we are planning some great Member golf and social events for this summer and early fall. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any input or questions. GOLF AT THE GALLERY COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE Noah Gessler
Aerification May is the time of the year when we begin aerifying the golf courses. Aerification is simply making holes in the turf surface and soil, either with a solid tine or the actual removal of small portions of the turf and soil with a hollow tine. Both of these processes are an important part of healthy turfgrass, no matter what part of the course. Key reasons for aerification are: To reduce compaction – creating air space and removing cores allows for soil to be loosened To improve water infiltration into the soil – creating channels for water to easily enter the soil To remove thatch – thatch is a layer of old plant material that builds up over time and can act to inhibit necessary processes To facilitating gas exchange between the soil and atmosphere – plant roots need oxygen and other gases need to escape to the atmosphere To encourage root growth – roots will grow where space, oxygen and water is available
The Gallery's Ladies Member-Guest Tournament's theme this year was Around the World in 18 Holes!
The overall goal is improving the health of the turfgrass and not upsetting golfers. All of these things help create healthier turf. Even an aggressive core aerification may only remove 10 – 12% of the surface, although it looks like quite a bit more. Fore greens we are targeting 20-25% removal per year and we only have two optimal times to aerify bentgrass, spring and fall. This is when the plant is able to easily recover. DOVE MOUNTAIN UPDATE Matt Nuechterlein
We had a very busy month of April at Dove with us hosting both the Men's Member-Guest & the Ladies Club Championship. As our season winds down, we have much to look forward to in the future. We are continuing to grow our Membership in a rapid fashion, which in turn means more and more fun events at the Club. In the month of May, we will aerify all 27 holes of the golf course and rotate the closures of Saguaro, Tortolita, and Wild Burro. This process is very important for the recovery and overall health of our green complexes. This process along with some chemical agents will allow us to subside the POA Annua encroachment on our Bent grass greens. Our new Superintendent - Nathan Gloyd, has been with us a little over 6 weeks and is anxious to put his imprints on the golf course and improving the overall conditions prior to this Fall. Nathan brings a tremendous amount of irrigation experience as well as great leadership to our Maintenance crew.

GOLF AT THE GOLF CLUB AT DOVE MOUNTAIN GOLF UPDATE Jake Hermes
April is typically our last month of the season with our major Member events at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. This year we hosted our Ladies Club Championship and our Men's Member Guest "The Shootout" during the first two weekends of the month. Both events were well attended and both events provided plenty of great golf and drama! Your 2022 Ladies Club Champion is Marian Carter, after she defeated Runner-Up Sarah Michelson 5&3 in their Championship match. Your 2022 Ladies Net Club Champion is Tammy Hutchison, after she defeated Runner-Up Priscila Park 3&2 in their championship match. Congratulations to all four ladies on a great 3 days of golf! Our 2022 Men's Member/Guest was the highest attended event in our history with 35 teams vying for the title! The event consisted of 5 matches within your flight taking place over three days and resulting in a 13-team shootout to decide the Champion. Your 2022 Men's Member/Guest Champions are Ed and Adam Fisher, who outlasted Bob Unthank and Ken Marinelli on the final hole to take the crown! Brian Thompson and Matt Quinn took 3rd place in this year's event. Below are the 6 flight winners from this year. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT This month's Member Spotlight is one of our newest Members, Johnny Fiore! Johnny joined both Clubs for the variety of playing 63 holes of golf and the Young Executive Membership opportunity. Johnny had always been a baseball player, but in his freshman year of high school, his knees and hips were in terrible shape. He wanted to play sports but knew his body couldn’t handle baseball, so the only other sport available during the same season was golf. Thus began his golf career! He then went on to be MVP for 3 years in a row. Fiore received scholarships to both Pima Community College and Pitt-Bradford in Pennsylvania, where he picked up the individual medal as he led the Panthers to the 2018 AMCC Championship, the program's first since 2002. Fiore uses the Clubs’ 12 practice areas to work toward his goal in becoming a Tour Pro. Way to go Johnny!

FOOD & BEVERAGE RECIPE OF THE MONTH: SONORAN SPICED CHICKEN WINGS Executive Chef John Wooters, The Gallery Grille Ingredients: 12 whole chicken wings (about 2-1/2 pounds) 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup cornmeal 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 1-1/2 teaspoons pepper 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1.Cut chicken wings into 3 sections; discard wing tip section. In a large bowl or shallow dish, combine the flour, cornmeal, cumin, salt, pepper and cayenne. Add the chicken wings, a few at a time. Turn to coat. 2. Transfer to a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 25-27 minutes on each side or until juices run clear and coating is set. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!
