COURSE MAINTENANCE

We are preparing the preventative maintenance schedule for the approaching spring and summer season of golf The most important item we have to schedule is the aerification of the greens I know that just the mere mention of the word “aerification” will make most golfers cringe Aerification of the greens is an extremely important cultural practice that helps the overall health of the turf Aerification achieves three important objectives It will reduce soil compaction, it allows air and gas exchange to occur in the soil and it reduces thatch accumulation When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend on are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air Without oxygen, the turf will become weaker and will eventually lead to weak areas covered in algae

The Aerification process creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting In most cases, it’s done by removing ½-inch cores from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water The spaces are then filled with sand that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward Thatch is an accumulation of dead stems, leaf blades and roots A little organic matter makes for a resilient green, but too much invites diseases and insects Aerification and topdressing can prevent thatch buildup Aerification is one of the best ways to reduce an existing thatch layer and prevent one from becoming established Aerification is an integral part of successful golf course management program and I hope that the aerifications scheduled for this year will be viewed as a short-term disruption that has long-term benefits for the course Thank you for your patience with the Agronomy Team as we tackle the upcoming season

Thank you,

Driving Range Etiquette

As we continue to move through the winter and into spring, I would like to bring to everyone ’ s attention to proper divot patterns when using the practice facilities The proper way to hit balls is to form a straight line with your divots leaving a 4 inch space in between lines. Creating a square or using the “random” technique of hitting golf balls from different locations takes the turf significantly longer to recover. Please see the photo below for the proper divot pattern as well as the USGA explanation as to what happens to the turf:

A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. This forces the golf facility to rotate tee stalls most frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee.

A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery.

The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In so doing, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method.
