GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE Jim Wallace

Greetings Golfers, The course is starting to come alive as a little more moisture moves into the area. We’ve gotten a good fertilizer application down in the fairways and we’ve already seen a positive response so far. We will continue spraying nitrogen around the greens and tees complexes until our rough application next week. Also, next week we will continue with the fairway verticut, as well as tee and collar aerification. We will also select a few spots to begin sodding within the scoring zone.

Bunker sand has been back-ordered since last month. I have been assured that the pit is producing again after several floods, and that we are on a short list for delivery. This is the white sand from Arkansas. Also, regarding raking of the bunkers we are trying other options to protect the bunker edges. Handraking and tamping down the sand edges are 2 possible solutions. However, ultimately, we will need to use the heavier machine with deep tines to stir the sand a couple times per week. Otherwise, we will create a hardpacked layer that I’m sure a few of you played through last week. Hope to see you out there, Jim Wallace

GOLF GOLF ETIQUETTE Justin Engel

Now that we are in the growing season there are some practices we would like to revisit while you and your guests are enjoying the golf course. Here are a few things that while simple will help the experience for both you and your fellow members. It is everyone’s responsibility to do these things to help maintain the course conditions. As a reminder, you are also responsible for your guest’s actions on the golf course. We thank you in advance for your help with these maintenance practices to ensure the golf course remains in the best condition possible. Ball Mark Repair: Did you know that an unrepaired ball mark on a green takes 3 WEEKS to heal!! While a properly repaired ball mark will recover within 2 to 3 days. The practice of repairing ball marks is one of the most important things a membership can do for the greens. The proper way to repair a ball mark is to use your tool and push in from all sides and then tap down with your putter to ensure a smooth surface. Placing your tool under the ball mark and lifting can cause damage to the root structure causing more damage than the ball mark itself. Please try to repair two ball marks on every green.

Cart Traffic: We ask that carts remain on the paths around all tee boxes and greens as well as on all par 3’s. Please also respect returning the carts to the path when you are within 30 yards of the green. This will help ensure the areas around tees and greens stay healthy. Constant traffic in these areas will mat down the grass and even worse, the wear will cause the grass to die. Bunkers / Rake Placement: Please be sure to rake all disturbed areas when you enter and hit a bunker shot. This will ensure that your fellow players will be afforded the same lie that you were presented. Please make sure to not only rake the bunker, but to make the disturbed areas as smooth as possible. This practice will ensure that all players are presented with the opportunity to be able to play a successful shot. The second part of the equation is placement of the rake itself. We do not want to put the whole rake inside the bunker, nor do we want to place the whole rake outside the bunker. We would like for the rake to be placed halfway in and halfway out. Please look at the photos to view proper rake placement versus non. In conclusion, the golf staff would like to thank everyone for their help in keeping these thoughts in mind and helping to maintain the golf course at its highest level. We all take pride as Shadow Hawk being “our” club and we should treat it as such. If there is anything that the golf staff can do to help or any questions that we can answer, please reach out to us at any time.
