BIENVENIDO A BORDO El 2014 ha estado lleno de muchos objetivos cumplidos, y a medida que se acerca fin de año, más nos entusiasma visualizar un emocionante 2015. Este año hemos añadido entre nuestros destinos la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia; actualmente volamos cuatro veces por semana, y la popularidad de esta ruta demanda que aumentemos nuevamente la frecuencia de vuelo. Para finales de este año estaremos volando diariamente. Para continuar satisfaciendo la demanda a este destino, así como a nuestras demás rutas, hemos adquirido tres nuevas aeronaves Fokker 100, de alto desempeño. El primero llegará a principios de diciembre y los otros dos a finales de diciembre e inicios de enero 2015. Como siempre, queremos mejorar nuestro servicio teniendo en mente las necesidades de nuestros clientes. En el marco de estas especiales fechas, aprovecho para agradecerle todo su apoyo durante este año, y le deseamos unas muy Felices Fiestas y un próspero año 2015.

Welcome aboard 2014 is coming to a close, and we look forward to an exciting 2015. This year we added Medellin, Colombia as a destination. We presently fly four times a week to Medellin. The popularity of the route demands that we increase our frequency, and by the end of the year, we will be flying there daily. To keep up with the demands on this destination and all our present routes we have just purchased three more, high performance, Fokker 100s. The first will arrive in early December, and the others will follow at the end of December and early January. Our aim is always to improve our service with our passengers needs in mind. As we approach the Holiday Season, I thank you for all your support and wish you a safe and happy holiday and a prosperous 2015.

Desde hace unos meses, todos los domingos podemos disfrutar de La Ciclovía, un espacio gratuito habilitado desde las 6:00 de la mañana hasta las 12:00 del medio día. Se trata de una ruta bidireccional que inicia en el Centro de Visita de Panamá Viejo y pasa por Vía Israel, Puente de Paitilla, Ave. Balboa y toda la Cinta Costera, hasta el estadio Maracaná. En el futuro se tiene previsto que se extienda hasta el sector de Juan Díaz. Con esta iniciativa se está promoviendo el ejercicio sano, el transporte alternativo y sobre todo la convivencia familiar. Son 38 kilómetros para niños, jóvenes, adultos y personas de la tercera edad. Además se pueden observar personas corriendo, caminando y patinando. Aprovechando el movimiento, a lo largo de la ruta también se encuentran varias zonas para hacer ejercicios aeróbicos, bailar y realizar actividades culturales.

Poco a poco se está creando más espacio para los ciclistas y generando conciencia entre los usuarios sobre las diversas opciones de movilidad.

The bike path is blocked off by cones which offer a safe and friendly atmosphere. The path is guarded by the Municipal Police, Red Cross, SINAPROC, the National Police, ATTT, and the Fire Brigade, all prepared to offer cyclists the best assistance.

Every Sunday for the past few months, we have been able to enjoy the bike path, a free space enabled from 6:00 in the morning until 12:00 noon. The bike path is a bi-directional path that starts at the Visitor’s Center in Panama Viejo and extends through Via Israel, the Paitilla overpass, Balboa Avenue and the whole Cinta Costera, up to the Maracana stadium. In the future, it will extend into the Juan Diaz sector. This initiative aims to promote healthy exercise, alternative transportation and especially familial coexistence. There are 38 kilometers available for children, youth, adults and the elderly. In addition, many people are running, walking and skating. Along the route there are also several areas for aerobics, dance and cultural activities that are making the most of this movement.

At the same time, Balboa Avenue is enabled, so that cars can continue to flow on the right side of the Cinta Costera 3, directed towards the Bridge of Americas.

Early birds can take advantage of the 30 available free bicycles.

In the future, the Mayor of Panama City intends to create a permanent path on Ricardo J. Alfaro Avenue (Tumba Muerto) and on El Cangrejo’s main street (Bella Vista neighborhood). Hopefully, this will create an incentive for more people to use alternative transportation. Little by little, more areas for cyclists are being created, and awareness is being generated about the diverse modes of transportation available.

e trata de las compuertas que funcionarán en las nuevas esclusas del Canal. Hay varias formas de verlas. Una es desde el Centro de Observación de la Ampliación ubicado en Colón, y la otra si tiene la oportunidad de ver el tránsito de una de las ocho compuertas que están siendo transportadas a través de la vía desde el Atlántico hacia el área de construcción de las nuevas esclusas en el Pacífico. Estos gigantes cruzando el Canal pueden ser vistos desde las esclusas de Gatún, el área de Gamboa, Pedro Miguel o el Centro de Visitantes de Miraflores. Todo ese movimiento de gigantes forma parte de importantes avances de la ampliación del Canal. Y es que ya están en Panamá las 16 compuertas que fueron construidas en Italia especialmente para las nuevas esclusas. Las 16 compuertas fueron trasladadas en cuatro embarques a partir de agosto 2013, con el último llegando a Panamá en el mes de noviembre del 2014.

CARACTERÍSTICAS DE LAS COMPUERTAS El último grupo de cuatro compuertas que llegó a Panamá incluyó dos que serán utilizadas en las nuevas esclusas del Atlántico y el otro par para el complejo del Pacífico. Las dos compuertas del Pacífico son las más altas y pesadas del conjunto de 16 unidades, con 33 metros de altura, 10 metros de ancho y 4,232 toneladas de peso. Estas compuertas serán ubicadas en la cámara que conectará las esclusas con el Océano Pacífico. Todas las compuertas tienen la misma longitud de 57.6 metros, sin embargo, varían en su altura, ancho y peso, según su ubicación en las cámaras de cada esclusa. They 16 new lock gates have arrived in Panama Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be surprised if while on a recent visit to the Panama Canal you encounter enormous structures crossing the interoceanic waterway. These are the new lock gates that will function on the new set of Canal locks. There are many ways to view the new lock gates. One way is by going to the Observation and Expansion Center in Colon. Another is by watching them transit the Canal from the Atlantic Coast to the new lock construction site on the Pacific. You can also see these giants transiting the Canal from the Gatun locks, the Gamboa area, Pedro Miguel or the Miraflores Visitorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center. This movement of giants is part of major developments in the Canal expansion. The 16 gates that were custom built in Italy for the new locks have all arrived in Panama. The 16 lock gates were transported in 4 shipments starting in August 2014. The last of these arrived in Panama in November 2014. Lock Gate Characteristics The last set of 4 lock gates that arrived in Panama will be used on the new locks in the Atlantic. A pair will also be used at the Pacific complex. The two lock gates being used on the Pacific side are the tallest and heaviest of the 16. They measure 33 meters high, 10 meters thick and weigh 4,232 tons. These gates will be located in the chamber that connects the locks with the Pacific Ocean. All of the lock gates are the same 57.6 meters long. However, their heights, widths and weights vary depending on their location in the different lock chambers. The lock gates average heights are about 30 meters, or about the size of the Panama Viejo tower. Production of the lock gates for the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks began in October 2011. This task was carried out by Italian subcontractors, Cimolai SpA. The nine locks will operate using a redundant system of revolving lock gates. There will be eight units in each complex. The last eight lock gates will be transported from the Atlantic to the Pacific between October and December this year. The lock gates are being transported across the waterway one at a time on board a barge assisted by two Panama Canal tugboats.

Adrenalina y deportes en Punta Chame

l pasado mes de octubre los amigos de Nitrocity nos extendieron una invitación para conocer sus instalaciones. Para llegar desde la ciudad, debe tomar la carretera Panamericana y desviarse en cuanto vea el cartel de Punta Chame. Comenzamos a adentrarnos por carretera entre la selva, donde destacan los carteles de “cuidemos la fauna”, “siembra un árbol” o “cuida los océanos”. Después de bajar la colina el paisaje va cambiando, hasta llegar al área protegida de los manglares de la bahía de Chame, donde una mezcla de tranquilidad y belleza nos dejó sin aliento. Unos veinticinco minutos después de haber tomado la bifurcación en la Panamericana, vemos el mar y Nitrocity. Aunque éste es un hotel para los amantes de los deportes extremos y la adrenalina, también es ideal para quienes disfrutan de la naturaleza y su entorno. La brisa constante y cálida se hace notar, y según nos comentan es una característica muy propia de Punta Chame. Se siente una gran amplitud; con la marea baja, la playa es inmensa; y con la marea alta, desaparece. Éste es el único sitio en el que podrá practicar a la vez actividades como skimboard, jetski, wakeboard y skateboard, entre otras. También podrá disfrutar de nuevas experiencias, como el “wakeboard cable park”, que consiste en practicar wakeboard dentro de una piscina artificial y remolcado por un

cable en lugar de un bote. En esa misma piscina, y para los menos experimentados, también está la opción del “stand up paddle”, se trata de remar manteniendo el equilibrio en una especie de gigantesca tabla de surf. Del otro lado encontramos una pista para realizar motocross, con sus dunas y charcos de agua; perfecto para desestresarse “a toda máquina”. Al lado, con un gran bullicio de ruedas, se encuentra el skatepark, donde los jóvenes, y los no tan jóvenes, practican sus trucos en las rampas.

Definitivamente, para disfrutar de los deportes extremos cerca del mar, éste es el lugar.

adrenaline and sports in Punta Chame In October, our friends at Nitrocity invited us to visit their installations. To drive there from the city, you take the Panamerican Highway and exit once you reach the sign for Punta Chame. We make our way down the jungle road, which is marked with signs noting "Take care of our Wildlife", "Plant a Tree" and "Take care of our Oceans." After descending the hill, the landscape changes, until we reach the protected mangrove area in Chame Bay. The mixture of tranquility and beauty took our breaths away. About twenty minutes after exiting the Panamerican Highway, we see the sea and Nitrocity. Although this is a hotel geared towards extreme sports and adrenaline junkies, it is also ideal for those who enjoy nature and its surroundings. The constant breeze and warmth is noticeable, and we are informed that it is very characteristic of Punta Chame. There is a great feeling of ampleness; during low tide, the beach is immense; and during high tide, it disappears. This is the only place you can skimboard, jetski, wakeboard and skateboard, among others. You will also enjoy new experiences, like the "cable wakeboard park", which consists of a wakeboard within an artificial pool, towed by a cable instead of a boat. In the same

pool, and for the less experienced, there is also the option of stand up paddle boarding, which consists of standing on a giant surfboard while trying to keep your balance as you paddle it. On the other side we find a motocross track, with its dunes and pools of water; perfect to unwind "full steam". Next, emitting abundant wheel noises, is the skatepark, where you’ll find the young, and not so young, practicing their tricks on ramps. Although Nitrocity’s concept is different, it also boasts a large swimming pool ideal for simply relaxing and enjoying Punta Chame. They have recently created "themed rooms", where sponsors created an environment with their brand and style, resulting in distinct and personalized spaces. Each sponsor determined the decoration and design, which will evolve over time. An example is the Adidas Room which has a ramp on its balcony. There are also Yamaha, Jägermeister, and GoPro Rooms. Camps for children and adolescents are some of the projects planned for 2015. They will get a chance to experience the adrenaline offered by these sports firsthand. There are also plans to expand the paintball area. This is definitely the place to enjoy extreme sports near the ocean.

HISTORY The American Trade Hotel offers luxury anchored in history. The American Trade Developing Company building was established in 1917 by Ramón Arias Feraud, the great-grandfather of one of the current owners. Certain times and places lend themselves to the creation of iconic hotels. A sense of history in movement is developing in the hotel and its surroundings.

The interior design of the American Trade Hotel is rooted in Casco Viejo’s colorful history, reflecting its diverse mix of cultural influences and design, and acknowledging that the building has undergone radical transformations in its unique history.

Combined with the increasing number of people in Panamanian society, Panama's position as a center of international travel is rapidly changing the Casco into one of the main cultural districts in the world.

UN AÑO DESPUES En sus 12 meses de vida el Centro se ha convertido en un referente de la agenda cultural panameña. Cada mes recibe una media de 1,700 visitantes, incluidos numerosos colegios y grupos de estudiantes universitarios. Por sus salas han pasado artistas de la talla del pintor Antón Lamazares, el escultor Manolo Paz, el bailarín y coreógrafo Fernando Hurtado, la compañía de teatro Histrión Teatro, o escritores como Juancho Armas Marcelo, Juan Bonilla, Jesús Marchamalo o Marta Robles. También se ha abierto a la cultura panameña acogiendo la primera exposición póstuma del maestro Alfredo Sinclair “Treinta años de abstracción”, o la obra de artistas panameños que representaron a su país en la BAVIC. “En 2015 continuaremos ofreciendo un espacio para el encuentro entre los creadores de Panamá y España. SU HISTORIA Al día de hoy aún no se ha podido determinar la fecha exacta de construcción de la casa actual; tampoco se conoce su dueño original. No obstante el tipo de decoración pseudorenacentista de la fachada hacia el paseo Esteban Huertas, con sus elaboradas pilastras y floridas ménsulas, sugiere una fecha de construcción entre 1910 y 1920, década en la cual este estilo se difundió con muchas variantes por todo el Casco Antiguo.” Lo que sí consta es que en 1925 se instaló allí la Sección de Arqueología e Historia (posteriormente Etnología e Historia) del Museo Nacional, proyecto de Octavio Méndez Pereira; en ese entonces Secretario de Instrucción Pública. Como institución, el Museo Nacional fue establecido el 27 de junio de ese mismo año; anteriormente solo existía una pequeña exhibición instalada en los predios del Instituto Nacional. Las salas de historia y etnografía tenían una valiosa colección de arte prehispánico que hoy forma parte de los fondos del Museo Antropológico Reina Torres de Arauz. En los años treinta, el Museo Nacional fue trasladado a una nueva sede en La Exposición, y la casa fue cedida a una asociación de supervivientes de la gesta de separación de Colombia en 1903, conocidos como “Soldados de la Independencia”, quienes instalaron allí una pequeña exhibición. En los años noventa, la exhibición fue removida y la casa fue transformada en la sede de la Dirección Nacional del Patrimonio Histórico, hasta su traslado a Albrook. Spain Cultural Center in Panama The Center was established as a meeting place to strengthen cultural bonds of cooperation between the two countries, promoting exchange and mutual understanding and addressing three major dynamics: education and training, a meeting point between Spanish cultural diversity and cultural actors in Panama, and the development of Panama's own cultural events. It occupies the building known as the Casa del Soldado de la Independencia (Home of the Soldier of the Independence). Spain restored the entire building between 2010-2013, in accordance with the architectual elements of iconic Casco Viejo. Throughout the 20th Century, the building housed the National Museum and later served as a meeting place for survivors from the separation from Colombia, known as “Soldados de la Independencia”. The restoration was possible due to the alliance between AECID (The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation), INAC and the Panama-Spain Foundation which brings together the main Spanish companies present in Panama.

The center maintains a philosophy of offering free activities to all people, and use of its library is free.

It was inaugurated on 18th October 2013 by His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias.

The exact date of the current house’s construction has not yet been determined; nor has the original owner been identified. However, the pseudoRenaissance facade decoration toward the Esteban Huertas path, with its elaborate pilasters and flowery brackets, suggests that it was constructed between 1910 and 1920, a decade in which variations of this style spread throughout the Old Quarter. What is certain is that in 1925 the National Museum’s Section of Archaeology and History (later Ethnology and History) was established there, led by Octavio Méndez Pereira, the then Secretary of Public Education. The National Museum was established as an institution on June 27th of that year. Previously, there was only a small display installed at the National Institute. The halls of history and ethnography had a valuable collection of preHispanic art which today is part of the Reina Torres de Arauz Anthropological Museum. In the thirties, the National Museum moved its headquarters to La Exposicion, and the house was sold to an association of survivors with a deed from the Separation of Colombia in 1903. These survivors were known as "Soldiers of Independence". They installed a small exhibit in the building. In the nineties, the exhibit was removed and the house was transformed into the headquarters for the National Directorate of Cultural Heritage. It remained there until its transfer to Albrook.

We celebrate the Christmas spirit with our own traditions, and there is no better place to celebrate than the Light Festival in Medellin. On their website, National Geographic magazine ranks the Light Festival in Medellin as one of the ten most beautiful in the world. This Christmas show can be enjoyed from November 29, 2014 to January 12, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Since 1997, a name identifying the Light Festival’s theme and central concept has been chosen. El Ganador del premio Grammy, Danilo Pérez es uno de los músicos más influyentes y dinámicos de nuestro tiempo. CLAUDIA ACUÑA “Rhythm Of Life es considerado uno de los mejores discos jazz” Cantante chilena de jazz, considerada como la más exitosa artista del jazz chileno de todos los tiempos, reside en Nueva York, EUA. Se destaca principalmente por cantar jazz standards, baladas, y bossa nova, como también poder desarrollar y dar a conocer el folclore de Chile en Estados Unidos y el mundo del jazz. A finales de los años 90' firma con el sello Verve, una de los más prestigiosos sellos discográficos de jazz de todo el mundo, en donde graban figuras como Diana Krall y Natalie Cole.

Miguel Zenón representa a un selecto grupo de músicos que tienen magistralmente equilibrado y mezclado los polos de la innovación y la tradición. Ampliamente considerado como uno de los saxofonistas más creativos e influyentes de su generación, también ha desarrollado una voz única como compositor y conceptualista. Ha concentrado sus esfuerzos en el perfeccionamiento de una fina mezcla entre la música Latinoamericana Folklórica y Jazz.

También se ha dedicado a ofrecer conciertos gratuitos en espacios abiertos en comunas populares como Maipú, Cerro Navia, San Joaquín y Conchalí, acompañada de su cuarteto y como lady crooner de la Conchalí Big Band en su país natal Chile.

CLAUDIA ACUÑA Claudia Acuña is the Chilean jazz singer regarded as the most successful entertainer of Chilean jazz of all time. She lives in New York. She stands out primarily for singing jazz standards, ballads, and bossa nova, as well as developing and disseminate the folklore of Chile in the United States and the world of jazz. In the late 90s she signed with the label Verve, one of the most prestigious jazz labels around the world, where stars such as Diana Krall and Natalie Cole have also recorded. She has also performed free concerts in open spaces in popular and populous districts as Maipú, Cerro Navia, San Joaquin and Conchalf, accompanied by his quartet and as the lady crooner of the Conchali Big Band in his native Chile. He has concentrated his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Latin American folk music and jazz. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he studied classical saxophone at the Free School of Music of Puerto Rico before receiving a degree in Jazz Studies from the Berklee College of Music and a Masters degree in Jazz Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. The list of musicians that Zenon has toured and or recorded with include: The SFJAZZ Collective, Charlie Haden, Fred Hersh, Kenny Werner, David Sanchez, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, The Mingus Big Band, Bobby Hutcherson and Steve Coleman. Según el Instituto Smithsonian, es común encontrar el oso perezoso dos-dedos (Choloepus hoffmani) en la estación seca; mientras que durante la época lluviosa es más fácil encontrar el tres-dedos (Bradypus variegatus). Los osos perezosos están diseñados para vivir en los árboles. Algunos permanecen en el mismo árbol por años y duermen hechos un ovillo, con la cabeza entre sus patas delanteras y sus patas traseras juntas. Sus manos y pies son muy especializados, tienen largas y curvas garras que les permiten colgarse de las ramas con las patas hacia arriba sin esfuerzo. A veces se sientan en el borde de las ramas, donde normalmente comen, duermen, e incluso paren colgados de ellas. Bajan a la tierra a orinar y defecar una vez a la semana. Estos osos normalmente son buenos nadadores y se lanzan directamente desde el bosque tropical o manglar al río y al mar.

ffectionately known as oso perezoso or “lazy bear,” the sloth is perhaps the world’s slowest mammal. Described as “otherworldly” and “muppet-like”, the sloth is one of Panama’s more unusual animals. Two genera, the two-toed and three-toed, are about the size of a small dog; they have short, flat heads, big round eyes, a short snout, long legs, tiny ears and look like they don’t have a neck. The three-toed sloth, which is the more common, has a coarse grey coat, masked eyes, and weighs 8 or 9 pounds. The two-toed sloth has a light gray to blond coat, a more prominent muzzle, reddish eyes and weighs 15 to 18 pounds. According to the Smithsonian Institute, it is common to find the two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmani) in the dry season and, during the rainy season, the three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus). Given the speed at which it moves, each sloth’s life must be respected as an epic journey of historic proportions. Sloths move only when necessary and even then very slowly. They can move at a marginally higher speed if they are in immediate danger from a predator (15 feet per minute), but they burn large amounts of energy doing so. Anyone who has spent time in Panama is likely to have witnessed a sloth making its way across a road in both rural and urban settings. Many have stopped on more than one occasion to ensure the creature’s safe passage from road to jungle. The Corredor Norte in Panama City was the recent site of a significant traffic jam while. Drivers, usually impatient at the smallest delay, generously accepted their delay and watched in wonder while Mr. Sloth inched his way to safety. are also surprisingly good swimmers and sometimes fall directly from the rain forest or mangrove trees into rivers and the ocean. The Cecropia tree's leaves are a main source of food for the mainland sloths, supplemented by other tree’s leaves, fruit and insects. Sloths have very large, specialized, slow-acting stomachs with multiple compartments in which symbiotic bacteria break down the tough leaves. As much as twothirds of a well-fed sloth's body weight consists of the contents of its stomach, and the digestive process can take a month or more to complete. Watch for this magnificent creature of nature as you make your way around the connecting highways of Panama City or as you travel into the interior provinces. He is a sight to behold.

Estos “tesoros” son guardados celosamente y esperados con mucha expectativa en las ocasiones especiales. Desde el arroz con leche cuando nace el primer diente de un bebé, hasta cumpleaños, bodas, y muy es-

pecialmente Navidad y Año Nuevo. Algunas de las más conocidas son “arroz con pollo”, “arroz con guandú”, “arroz con coco”, “roscas de pan” y “ensalada de papa”. Estas recetas varían de provincia en provincia, incluso de casa en casa, pero son igualmente populares en todo Panamá. En esta ocasión, les traemos una deliciosa versión de la famosa ensalada de papa.

E N S A L A D A D E P A P A E S C A P E S INGREDIENTES 5 papas grandes 1 cebolla roja pequeña 4 huevos duros –hervidos- (picados) 2 tallos de apio, (finamente picados) ¼ taza de aceitunas picadas ¾ taza de vinagre de manzana ¾ taza de aceite de oliva 2 cucharaditas de sal 1 cucharadita de orégano seco 1 cucharadita de pimienta negra ½ cucharadita de polvo de ajo

PROCEDIMIENTO Hierva 5 papas limpias en agua con sal hasta que sea fácil “pincharlas” (recuerde no sobre cocinar). Deje enfriar, y luego refrigere. Pique en pequeños cubos. Mezcle aceite, vinagre, sal, orégano, pimienta, y polvo de ajo y marine la papa picada con la mezcla, y deje reposar por al menos una hora en el refrigerador. Añada la cebolla picada, apio, huevos y aceitunas; vuelva a dejarla en el refrigerador durante una hora. Decore con huevo, aceitunas, tallitos de apio y remolacha. Sirve 8 personas

Escapes Potato Salad

Every Panamanian household has its holiday food traditions that usually include sacred family recipes. These treasures are jealously guarded and long looked forward to for special occasions. They are served for many celebrations from rice pudding made for baby’s first tooth, to birthdays, weddings, and especially Christmas and New Years. Among the often present comfort party foods are “Arroz con Pollo,” chicken and rice, “Arroz con Guandu,” rice with pigeon peas, “Arroz con Coco,” coconut rice, “Roscas de Pan,” rings of egg bread and “Ensalada de Papas,” potato salad. These recipes vary from province to province but are popular everywhere. This month, Escapes offers our favorite variation on potato salad. Something a little different and very delicious. Ingredients:

cake: 5 large potatoes 1 small red onion 4 hard boiled eggs, (chopped) 2 celery stalks, (stripped and finely chopped) ¼ cup chopped olives

¾ cup apple cider vinegar ¾ cup olive oil 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon black pepper ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Procedure:

Boil 5 clean potatoes in salted water until easily pierced (do not overcook).

Cool, then refrigerate until cold. Chop into bite sized cubes.

Mix the oil, vinegar, salt, oregano, pepper, and garlic powder and marinate the cubed potatoes with the mixture for at least one hour in the refrigerator.

Add the chopped onion, celery, eggs and olives and return to the refrigerator for an hour. Garnish with egg, olives celery sprigs or beets. Serves 8 98
