BIENVENIDO ABORDO, Con la creciente demanda de nuestro servicio, nos hemos visto en la necesidad de ampliar nuestra flota de aviones en las rutas occidentales a David. Con este propósito, hemos adquirido dos aviones Fokker 100 para mejorar nuestros horarios actuales, y contar con asientos adicionales. El primero de estos jets llegará a principios de junio, esperamos que el proceso de certificación sea rápido y que esté operando a finales de mes. El segundo está programado para el mes de julio. Como siempre, nuestra misión es brindarle el mejor servicio, y seguimos trabajando hacia esa meta. ¡Le deseamos un excelente viaje! y esperamos atenderle pronto nuevamente.
WELCOME ABOARD, On behalf of the entire Air Panama crew, we thank you for the pleasure of serving you. With a growing demand for increased service, we have found it necessary to expand our jet fleet on the western routes to David. Therefore, we have recently purchased two Fokker 100s to enhance our present schedule with additional seats. We will be taking delivery on the first of these aircraft at the beginning of June and expect it to move quickly through the certification process and be on line by the end of the month. The second should arrive in July. As always our mission is to serve you well, and we continue working towards that goal. Have a good flight! We look forward to flying you again soon.

Remnants of ancient civilizations can be found all along the coast and in interesting places like the Escudo de Veraguas. Much of the charm of Isla Colon can be traced to the golden years of the United Fruit Company in the 20th century. The fascinating and mysterious Congo Society of today are the descendants of brave slaves known as Cimmarones who escaped from the Spanish and took refuge in the deep and foreboding jungles.

There was once so much treasure that even today it is conceivable that one could find a silver piece of eight or even a gold doubloon on the beach or hike in the jungle. The first European to recognize this distinctive place was Christopher Columbus. He knew it was special from the moment he sailed into the Chiriqui Lagoon in 1502.

3. Fuerte San Lorenzo Declarada en 1980 como Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, fue una de las más antiguas fortalezas españolas en América. Esta área protegida se encuentra en la desembocadura del río Chagres y cuenta con una poblada selva, ideal para la observación de aves, además de bosques, senderos y arrecifes para practicar kayak.

Y es que el 7 de enero de ese mismo año la grúa Alexander La Valley realizó el primer tránsito interoceánico a través de la vía, mientras realizaba trabajos de rutina, siete meses antes del tránsito inaugural del Ancón.
On January 7th of that same year, a crane boat named Alexander La Valley completed the passage while conducting routine maintenance a full seven months before the inaugural Ancon transit.
Desde entonces el Canal de Panamá ha registrado más de un millón de tránsitos. La histórica marca se alcanzó el 4 de septiembre de 2010 cuando el buque Fortune Plum se convirtió en el tránsito un millón.
Since that time, the Panama Canal has registered over a million transits. The historic millionth transit was reached by the crossing of the Fortune Plum on September 4th, 2010.
Según el tamaño de las embarcaciones, un tránsito toma entre ocho y 10 horas del Atlántico al Pacífico o viceversa. Transit times average between 8 to 10 hours, depending on the size of the vessel. However, the fastest transit in history was made in June of 1979 by a US Navy Pegasus hydrofoil which completed the cross from the Gatun Locks to the Miraflores Locks in 2 hours and 41 minutes.

l 17 de marzo se llevó a cabo en la ciudad de Portobelo, el primer festival de la Pollera Congo.
En este espectáculo se hizo homenaje a la Reina Catalina Monserrate (1920-1994), quién fue en múltiples ocasiones Reina del Palenque de Portobelo, siendo aún después de su muerte, un gran modelo a seguir por sus contemporáneas. En el Museo de la Real Aduana de Portobelo se realizó, en honor a esta emblemática Reina Conga, una muestra de arte y una exposición de su pollera, asimismo de piezas audiovisuales con memorias de su corte y allegados, lo cual conmovió a los portobeloños.

Portobello celebrated its first Festival of the Congo Pollera on May 17th, 2012 honoring the important role that black women have traditionally played in Congo society and supporting the social and cultural development of the Colon Province. This remarkable festival was dedicated to Queen Catalina Monserrate (1920-1994) who was crowned on multiple occasions in her “Palenque*” at Portobello. She has continued to be, even in her passing, an exemplary model for the women of the community to follow. Her memory was honored by the Real Aduana Museum of Portobello with the museum’s inclusion of a piece of art, an exposition of her polllera, and audio visual materials with moving memories of her and her courts.

Uno de los atractivos del festival fue el Desfile de Polleras en el Muelle de Santiago de la Gloria, donde las reinas y congos atracaron en el muelle para deleitar a los espectadores desfilando las vistosas polleras congas a su máximo esplendor.
The parade of polleras at the Santiago de la Gloria pier was one of the highlights of the festival. The crowds were delighted when the queens and congos came alongside the pier and then splendidly paraded in their bright polleras .

Esta actividad cultural y artística contó con la participación de 10 palenques en escena, además de presentaciones de danzas congo y conjuntos musicales y folclóricos. Se destacó además la feria artesanal y gastronómica del mar, la cual permitió que el público degustara de los diversos platos y sabores de la comida costeña. Ten “palenques” participated in this culturally artistic festival. There were dance presentations, musical and folkloric groups and local artisanal crafts to see and buy. The seafood stalls gave visitors the opportunity to taste and enjoy the diverse flavors and dishes of the Caribbean Coast.

His swimmers are ethereal beings suspended in cool blues and surrounded in silence. They fade away and turn into water or air. Even without faces, they are watching us ... or rather inviting us to look at them, to participate in the eternal search for answers. Maybe together we will come to the conclusion that human reality is a constant question. Full of mysteries and baffling at times, his paintings always seek to tell a story. His figures frozen in time, challenge space. They transform, their essence flows like the water that surrounds them. They are as real as their stories and as ephemeral as a dream. “Ballenas jorobadas invaden la ciudad de Panamá” “Humpback whales invade Panama City” ontados en un pequeño helicóptero, volamos sobre el Golfo de Panamá en busca de ballenas jorobadas para capturar imágenes de su migración, reproducción y nacimiento, como parte de un proyecto fotográfico y documental de la Fundación Albatros Media que promueve su conservación. Cada año, entre los meses de junio y septiembre, el Pacífico panameño es visitado por las ballenas jorobadas del hemisferio Sur, ya que estas se reproducen en aguas cálidas, migran a la Antártida, y luego retornan al año de gestación para dar a luz. Las crías nacen entre julio y agosto, y aprovechan las ensenadas de aguas bajas y calmas del trópico para aprender a sobrevivir en los mares. Hoy, preocupado por el exterminio de la biodiversidad, por las malas artes de pesca, por la contaminación, por la acidificación del mar debido al cambio climático, y luego de una década de aventuras marítimas, hago un alto en la “ruta de gigantes”. Quiero presentar unos extractos de mi diario de viaje acompañado del siguiente portafolio de imágenes (que actualmente se presentan en las calles y centros comerciales de la Ciudad de Panamá con motivo de la reunión anual de la Comisión Ballenera Internacional). Las mismas reflejan la grandiosidad de estas magníficas viajeras de los mares, como un llamado a emprender su conservación.

On a small helicopter we flew over the Gulf of Panama in search of humpback whales. Our mission, to photograph their migration, reproduction and births as part of a photo documentary project to promote conservation by the Albatros Media Foundation. Every year, between June and September, the Panamanian Pacific is visited by humpback whales that migrate from the south. They reproduce in warm waters, then migrate to Antarctica and return to give birth the following year. The young are born between July and August and take advantage of the shallow water inlets and the calm of the tropics to learn to survive in the open sea. Today, we are concerned about the destruction of biodiversity, bad fishing practices, pollution, and ocean acidification caused by climate change. After a decade of maritime adventures, I make a stop at “the path of the giants” to share the following photographs which reflect the grandeur of these great travelers of the seas. We also aim to call attention to the importance of their conservation.

Anclando en muchas comunidades de pescadores artesanales pude también conocer su dura realidad, y entender que la observación de ballenas, delfines y lobos marinos, de manera reglamentada y ordenada, podría ser una de las formas de llevar una mejor calidad de vida a estas comunidades marino-costeras, agobiadas económicamente por la merma de las especies comerciales. Es que el avistamiento de ballenas es un negocio global que practican más de 9 millones de personas y representa más de 1 billón de dólares anuales. Sin duda, una gran oportunidad de desarrollo, y una esperanza para los más necesitados. A pesar de los beneficios económicos de la conservación de cetáceos, las ballenas son arponeadas y descuartizadas a bordo de los buques balleneros de Japón, Noruega e Islandia. Japón (que lleva a cabo anualmente lo que ellos llaman “cacería con fines científicos”), y sus aliados, Noruega e Islandia, pretenden incrementar a nivel global la cacería comercial de ballenas con objeto de consumo humano, para usos industriales o para alimentos de mascotas. Si bien la Comisión Ballenera Internacional impuso una moratoria para la caza de cetáceos desde 1986, Japón, Noruega e Islandia, tratan actualmente de poner fin a la prohibición, ante una oleada mundial de críticas y protestas. Una de las tantas razones que llaman a su conservación, y que salta a la vista, es que valen muchísimo más vivas que muertas.
It deserves our awareness and protection. It was on these expeditions that I was able to capture unrivalled moments of whales in their delivery room. It is through this experience that I learned to value them as a symbol of the ocean’s purity. Anchoring in many artisanal fishing communities, I witnessed their harsh reality. I was able to understand that organized and regulated whale, dolphin and sea lion watching could lead to a better quality of life for these coastal communities. Whale watching is enjoyed by over 9 million people and brings in over 1 billion dollars annually. This is undoubtedly a great opportunity for development and hope for the needy. Despite the economic benefits of cetacean conservation, whales are hunted and slaughtered by whaling ships from Japan, Norway and Iceland. Japan (under the guise of what they claim is “hunting for scientific research”) and its allies, Norway and Iceland, plan on increasing the commercial hunting of whales. The aim of this increase is for industrial use and to make pet food. Although the International Whaling Commission imposed a moratorium on whaling in 1986, Japan, Norway and Iceland are currently trying to end the ban. This has spurred a global wave of criticism and protests against them.

ara quienes crecimos en este paraíso tropical, es casi imposible imaginarnos el paisaje que rodea nuestras costas sin la figura inigualable de los cocoteros mecidos por la brisa del mar. Las esbeltas palmeras que crecen en desorden invitándonos al descanso y tentándonos con sus exóticos frutos que prometen frescura. Es que hablar de coco(cocos nucifera) es hablar de playa, de agua de pipa y arroz con guandú. Es una fruta que de apariencia es ruda, grande y redonda, y esconde uno de los secretos de la naturaleza mejores guardados. Su exterior duro cubierto por una capa fibrosa cuando se seca guarda celosamente su tesoro suculento compuesto de una pulpa carnosa y un líquido transparente lleno en su justa proporción de todos los elementos de la tabla periódica (¿recuerdan las clases de química?), eso quiere decir muchos minerales y vitaminas pero ...¡sin calorías!.

It is hard for us who have grown up in the tropics to imagine our coastal beaches without coconut palms gently swaying in the breeze. These svelte palms invite us to relax and tempt us with their exotic and refreshing fruit, the coconut (cocos nucifera.) To think of it is to think of beaches, coconut water and coconut with pigeon pea rice. Its large, roundish and rough appearance guards one of nature’s best secrets. The hard, fibrous exterior jealously protects a succulent treasure of meaty pulp and a clear liquid that seems to contain the entire Periodic Chart of Elements, remember it from Chemistry class? It really has lots of vitamins and minerals, andwithout the calories!
No sucede lo mismo con la pulpa que aporta aproximadamente 350 calorías por cada 100 gramos, pero esto se compensa con el exquisito y exótico sabor que aporta a muchas preparaciones. . El coco es un fruto tropical del cual se aprovecha prácticamente todas sus partes, tanto de la planta como del fruto. Del coco se extrae también aceite al que se le atribuyen propiedades calmantes, regenerativas y hasta adelgazantes. También son aprovechables la madera de su tallo y sus hojas usadas con frecuencia como techo en algunas pintorescas construcciones. En la costa atlántica de nuestro país, específicamente en las provincias de Colón y Bocas del Toro y la comarca de Kuna Yala, existen muchísimos platos cuyo ingrediente característico es la leche de coco. Precisamente es de la Comarca Kuna Yala la receta que les ofrezco en esta oportunidad, una versión de la famosa TULEMASE, deliciosa sopa de pescado con leche de coco, plátano, ñame y yuca, que espero que preparen y disfruten.
I cannot say the same for the pulp which has 350 calories in every 100 grams (approx. 4½ oz.), but that is compensated by its exotic, exquisite flavor. The coconut palm is full of good things. Coconut oil has calming, regenerative and even slimming properties. Its stalk provides wood, and its branches are often used for thatching those picturesque roofs. On our Atlantic Coast, especially in the provinces of Bocas del Toro, Colon, and Guna Yala, there are many dishes whose characteristic ingredient is coconut. I would like to take the opportunity to offer you one of these recipes from Guna Yala. This is a version of their famous Tulemasa, a delicious fish soup made with coconut milk, plantain, ñame, and yucca (manioc.)
TULEMASE
Ingredientes: 2 libras de pescado de carne firme (corvina, robalo, pargo, mero) cortado en ruedas. 64
Ingredients 2 lbs of firm fleshed fish (corvina, bream, snapper, grouper) cut in rounds.
1 plátano pintón, pelado y picado en ruedas de
1 just ripe plantain, peeled and cut in 1” round pieces
1 pulgada. ½ libra de yuca, pelada y cortada en pedazos de 1 pulgada
½ lb. yucca peeled and cut in 1” cubes
½ libra de ñame, pelado y cortado en pedazos de 1 pulgada. 1 cebolla pequeña picadita. 2 dientes de ajo picaditos. 2 hojas de culantro.
½ lb. ñame peeled and cut in 1” cubes 1 small onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 culantro leaves 2 cups of coconut milk
2 tazas de leche de coco.
1½ liters of fish broth, made from the head and tail of fish
1 ½ litros de caldo de pescado*. (Hecho con la cabeza y la cola del pescado).
Salt and pepper
C/n de sal y pimienta negra recién molida.
Garnish with a wedge of lemon, chopped green onion and parsley

Procedure:
Colocar en una olla de metal el caldo de pescado y dejar hervir. Agregarle la cebolla, el ajo y las hojas de culantro, y añadirle el plátano, ñame y la yuca. Sazonar con sal y pimienta. Dejar cocinar por diez minutos y luego añadirle el pescado, dejar cocinar por unos cinco minutos más y agregarle la leche de coco. Cocinar hasta que el plátano y los tubérculos se ablanden y servir.
Bring the broth to a boil in a heavy pot. Add the onion, garlic, culantro, plantain, yucca, and ñame. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for ten minutes and add the fish. Cook for five minutes and add the coconut milk. Remove the cooked fish, debone it, skin it, and set it aside. Boil the plantain, yucca, and name until tender, add the deboned fish and serve immediately. It’s great with a squeeze of lime and a dash of hot sauce.

El Campamento / The camp. Estas fueron las palabras de Travis Taliaferro, presidente de la Cámara de Turismo de Boquete y organizador del Barú EcoFest 2012. Esta iniciativa tuvo lugar los días 21 y 22 de abril, en el marco del Día Mundial de la Tierra, donde participaron 280 personas y un total de 20 periodistas cubrieron el evento, el cual contó además con la presencia de autoridades, apoyo médico y auxiliar. Llegada a la cima A las 5:30 a.m. del domingo 22, luego de una noche de poco descanso considerando el esfuerzo físico y el agotamiento de haber emprendido la escalada el día anterior, el grupo de caminantes reanudó el ascenso al Volcán Barú, y cerca de las 6:10 a.m. llegaron a la cima. Concientizando Crear conciencia sobre la importancia que tiene este sitio y su atractivo turístico, fue uno de los fines por los que se realizó esta actividad, comenta Eneida Palma, Administradora de la ANAM en Chiriquí. El Volcán Barú posee áreas protegidas, las cuales deben conservarse de manera adecuada por parte de aquellas personas que lo visiten; y de esta manera garantizar el desarrollo sostenible de este hermoso sitio natural. 74
“The goal is to form the largest group ever to summit the Baru, and give due importance to the highest point in our land”, explained Travis Taliaferro, President of Boquete’s Chamber of Commerce and organizer of Baru EcoFest 2012. This event took place the 21st and 22nd of April as part of Earth Day. It was attended by 280 people and 20 journalist as well as local authorities and a trained medical staff.
