reating a safe environment for you and your children is one of the most important things when building a house. There are a number of hazards that are present in each and every home but thankfully, there are ways to prevent these dangers.

FALLS You might think that falling down the stairs is not considered as a hazardous situation; however, it is considered as one of the most common household hazards. So how would you prevent your children or yourself from falling down the stairs and injuring your head or breaking a bone? You need to make sure your stairs are safe by having solid handrails and good lighting as well as adding safety gates in case you have any children in the house. To avoid slipping in the bathroom or in the house, you can add rugs or non-slip stickers. You can also install supports in the bathroom to help the elderly and children get in or out of the shower. FIRES Accidental fires are one of the worst things that could happen to your house. Not only do they destroy everything you own, they could cause a loss of life which is devastating. So how could we prevent accidental fires from happening in the first place? And how could we prevent one from escalating to a disaster? When building a house, one of the main

things that you need to make sure is you install a fire alarm and you have to make sure it’s working from time to time or if it needs a change in battery. Buying a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket can help reduce the damage and stop the fire from getting out of hand. CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that might cause headaches and dizziness as well as vomiting. High level of exposure might even lead to death. What makes this poisonous gas more dangerous than other gases? Carbon monoxide is impossible to detect by smell, sight, or sound. In order to detect carbon monoxide, you have to install a carbon monoxide detector that notifies you whenever this gas reaches high levels in your home. You might be wondering where this gas comes from and how would it reach high levels in your home? The answer is quite simple. To prevent carbon monoxide leaks in your house, you have to keep maintaining your home at least once a year. Examples for things that you have to maintain to prevent leakage of carbon monoxide are water heaters or air conditioners and any other devices that might use gas or oil. POISONING A lot of items in our houses are considered poisonous such as cleaning supplies which are found in every house. When

building a house, you need to have a storage room for supplies that could be poisonous. Store your medications in a higher cupboard in order to keep them out of your children’s reach is one of the most important things. You have to have a drawer that holds your personal products such as make up and hair products and even soap to keep away from your children or any pets that you might own. BURNS Burns are not as common as other hazards mentioned above; however, it’s caused by two common things found in almost every house which are dishwashers and stoves. These burns happen usually to children or to women while they’re cooking. When buying a dishwasher, make sure to add a safety lock in order to keep your children from opening the dishwasher and getting burns or any other injuries. As for stoves, you can add stove knob covers which prevent children from turning on the stove and prevents adults from accidently bumping into the knob and turning it on. Stove knob covers prevent accidental fires from happening as well. If you ever wondered what is the ‘secret ingredient’ that makes the space more inviting, here is the answer. When it comes to space it has a lot to do with textures. A study shows that, even though texture is more subtle than colour, form or pattern, it is perceived both by sight and touch. Plus, elements with texture often inspire one to imagine what something feels like without touching it. Our brain actually feels drawn into a space that has pleasant textures. For example, a smooth textured back drop wall, a polished natural wood surface or a chunky, woven throw-blanket draped over a sofa, each of the elements has a

Let’s take a look at a few ways to use texture and how this understated quality can bring more warmth, depth and interest to your home. 1. A textural canvas You can make a ‘feature wall’ or an ‘accent wall’ using wall cladding in natural stone effect, or use textured paint for a wall as a back drop along with good lighting that enhances its textural quality. One can also splurge for textured wallpaper as it can be a great way to make a space luxurious without looking too over-the-top. When choosing textured wallpaper, keep in mind the effect you’d like to create in the room for instance, satin finishes have a smooth texture that reflects some light, giving a baroque-like feeling of opulence.
