KEEP YOUR HOME COOL STORY HANEEN AL LAWATI
S
ome countries around the world enjoy summer; however, in Oman, summer tends to be very hot and people try to avoid going out as much as possible. Work and outdoor activities become really hard because of the harsh weather. So, is there a way to keep our house cold and cool especially in the summer?
Here are a few ideas of some cooling systems that can keep your house cold.
CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONERS AND HEAT PUMPS Each system consists of a large compressor that is located outdoors that drives the whole process and then it’s distributed throughout the house using air ducts. Heat pumps are closer to air conditioners except that the cycle is reversed and is used in heating the house during cold winters. ROOM AIR CONDITIONERS Room air conditioners are sized to cool just one room so a number of them are required for a whole house. However, they’re still cheaper than buying central systems. They work the same way as the system above as the compressor is located outdoors and then spreading around the room or in case you have a couple of air conditioners, the whole house. EVAPORATIVE COOLERS Evaporative coolers are less common than other systems; however, they’re an effective alternative especially in very dry areas. They work by pulling fresh outside air through moist air pads and then the air is circulated through the house. The experience of feeling cold when you get out of a swimming pool. DUCTLESS MINI-SPLIT AIR CONDITIONERS Mini-split air conditioners are very popular especially in houses without ductwork. They also use an outside compressor. However, the difference is that each room or zone has its own air handler. These indoor units are usually mounted on the walls or ceilings. The most important benefit of having a mini-split air conditioner is the flexibility in cooling individual rooms or zones. STATE OF THE ART COOLING A new home climate control technology is called Night Breeze which is designed to save energy in hot climates. It consists of a house fan, an air conditioner, and indirect water heater that run under one control system. There are also other technologies such as Coolerado Cooler which is an evaporative cooling technology as well as Thermal Energy Storage which works by storing energy in ice so at night, electricity is used to freeze water and the ice can cool the air in the house during the day. —lifestyle@timesofoman.com

Put a little food colouring in your toilet tank and wait, if the colour starts to appear without flushing, then you have a major leak and you should fix it immediately. INSTALL WATER-SAVING SHOWER HEADS AND LOW-FLOW FAUCET AERATORS Taking a long, hot shower can use up to five to ten gallons of water for every extra minute you use the shower in. You can reduce your shower time by installing a shower head which automatically pauses a running shower when it gets warm. Low-flow shower heads use up less than 2.5 gallons of water per minute.
USE YOUR DISHWASHER AND WASHING MACHINES FOR ONLY FULL LOADS Automatic dishwashers and washing machines should be fully loaded when used in order to save as much water as possible. For partial loads, you can adjust the water to match the amount of clothes you want to wash. Also try to avoid the permanent press cycle in washing machines which uses extra 20 litres (5 gallons) for an extra rinse. PLANT DROUGHT-RESISTANT LAWNS, SHRUBS AND PLANTS Using drought-resistant lawns such as the new ‘eco-lawn’ and planting plants that need less water is always an option to conserve water. However, the easiest way to save water is by group-
ing plants that need the same amount of water and watering them all at once instead of watering them separately. ADD ORGANIC MATTER AND USE EFFICIENT WATERING SYSTEM FOR YOUR PLANTS Adding organic material to your soil can help increase its absorption and therefore saves a bit of water. You can also reduce the amount of water used for plants and shrubs by placing the soaker hoses in a strategic way or by installing one of the following systems: Rain barrel water catchment system which is saving rain water in order to meet your watering needs or the drip-irrigation system which consists of a network of pipes that supplies soil with water directly. —lifestyle@timesofoman.com
