MUSCAT: Non-resident Indians (NRIs) will have to pay more for their tickets as the Indian government hiked marginally the service tax on airfares in its union budget for the financial year 2015-2016, on Saturday. According to the budget, flying is set to become marginally dearer in the next financial year thanks to the hike in service tax from 12.36 per cent to 14 per cent, but it will be applicable only for tickets purchased in India. Airlines officials and travel agents say that the hike will be nearly 2 per cent of the ticket price. >A3

Tourism impact Regarding the tourism impact, the official said that Oman has been actively involved with international and regional associations, societies and organisations for decades. With 50 per cent of the world’s population within only seven hours flying time from the Muscat airport, the Sultanate has in recent times captured the world’s attention, being named as one of the world’s most exciting, emerging tourist destinations. “In fact, the Sultanate has been approached to host many of the world’s most prestigious world congresses and events but did not have a suitable venue to do so. That is, of course, until the development of the new OCEC. It is being developed by Omran as a fully integrated convention precinct, supported by four hotels — a fivestar, two four-star and a threestar, with a combined capacity of 1,000 rooms,” said the CEO of Omran. >A5
