RELIEF TO WORKERS: This year the three-month-long mid-day break begins today. – Times of Oman

Call ministry to report mid-day break violations The Ministry of Manpower has asked for people’s help in ensuring that the offenders are punished and workers get the due relief

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: As the mid-day break begins today, the Ministry of Manpower says that public can call them directly at 80077000 or 24766470 if they see any violations. “The public can directly call the number and report violations. The violating companies will be penalised and the workers will be provided relief,” an official from the Ministry of Manpower said. “The department concerned and its officials are set to help the workers and penalise the companies who are violating mid-day break rule. The officials are already carrying out a campaign among the workers on how to beat

the heat,” the officials added. The regulations on occupational safety and health at facilities governed by the Labour Law issued by Ministerial Decision No. 286/2008, Article 16, prohibit the employment of workers at construction sites, or in open spaces, during periods of high temperature, particularly from 12:30pm to 3:30pm in the months of June, July, and August. Higher temperature This year’s three-month-long mid-day break begins today. Last week, the temperatures at many places in the Sultanate were hovering at around 48 degree Celsius and the global weather predictions have revealed that summer will be hotter

as the sea surface temperatures are going up due to the El Nino phenomenon. “The International Labour Organisation (ILO) codes and other treaties warn of risking workers’ health and safety by putting them to work under harsh conditions. It is inhuman to compel workers to toil under this scorching heat,” Mohammed Al Khaldi, board member of General Federation of Oman Trade Union (GFOTU), told the Times of Oman. “Workers can directly contact us if the companies are violating the mid-day break rule. We will coordinate with the ministry to penalise the violators,” Mohammed said, adding that the trade union is conducting awareness programmes for workers on how to beat the heat and keep themselves fit during these days when the temperature in the country is hovering around 50 degree Celsius. In 2014, during the mid-day break period, the ministry had inspected 700 facilities and fined 172 for violating the rule. In 2013, the ministry fined close to 35 companies. >A3 TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES
