Oman’s population expected to exceed 8 million by 2040 MUSCAT: Oman’s population could exceed 8 million by 2040, a study conducted by the National Centre for Statistics & Information (NCSI) has pointed out. In the same period, the labour market will witness 568,000 new recruits. The Sultanate will also see a number of development projects in the housing, electricity, water, health and education sectors, coming to fruition at an aggregate cost of over OMR2.9 billion, the study said. The study envisaged three scenarios with regard to population growth: high, medium and low increase. Assuming a high increase scenario ---based on a fertility rate of 4.5 births per woman, and 44.5 per cent of the population expected to be expatriates ---the number of Sultanate’s inhabitants will reach 8,000,170 in 2040, while it would be 6,000,770 if expatriates account for 33 per cent of the total population. With per capita GDP standing at the 2014 figure of OMR7,863, the high increase in population

cording to a World Bank study), the increased output will reach OMR269 billion (keeping expatriates at 44.5 per cent) while it will be OMR216 billion if expatriates make up 33 per cent of the population. ment last week and was planning his wedding. The other Indian victim has two young daughters. The accident happened early Sunday morning around 01:30 in Al Khoud. According to a senior official from the ROP, a minor accident took place in Al Khoud, where the driver left the accident scene. “After contacting him, he came back driving fast, which resulted in another accident claiming the lives of two expatriates, two police officers and the life of a co-passenger in the car. Investigations are still underway,” the official said, adding that the Omani national who drove the car is hospitalised

with serious injuries. “The driver was drunk,” the ROP spokesman added. Traffic Law Article 50 of Oman’s Traffic Law states that, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol is punishable by imprisonment of up to one year and/or a fine of up to OMR500. The law adds that if the DUI results in an injury or death, it is punishable by imprisonment between one and five years. The Indian victims have been identified as Shanavas Attumpuram and Sainul Abdeen from the south Indian state of Kerala. >A6
