Omani school student dies in Mudhaibi accident REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: An Omani kindergarten student died in a road accident in Mudhaibi on Wednesday morning, while another child is battling for his life, police officials said. Twelve other children were also injured in the accident. “Two vehicles were involved in the collision. One was a car and the other was a minivan in which the children were travelling. The accident occurred on Al Mudhaibi highway,” the police official told Times of Oman. Road safety experts have been

calling for effective measures for tackling dangerous driving practices that put the lives of children at risk daily. They have also been urging the authorities for the promulgation of proper law to regulate the school bus transport and drivers. On March 5 this year, the department dealing with buses at the Ministry of Education, issued guidelines regarding standards which the government school buses must meet. Oman has seen many accidents in the recent past in which many children have died or suffered injuries. >A6

Bosses abuse amnesty to save money A top official from Manpower says that employers who use the immigration amnesty as a loophole to save money will face court

REJIMON K /FAHAD AL GHADANI

reji@timesofoman.com fahadnews@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Companies in Oman accused of misusing the immigration amnesty to save costs and avoid their responsibilities to employees have been warned they will face court, a top official at the Ministry of Manpower told Times of Oman. There have been reports that employers have been letting their workers’ visas expire and then cutting them adrift without paying their notice period or flight home, which is the legal duty of any boss. During the immigration amnesty, fines for overstaying workers are waived and the illegal employee is forced to pay his own fare home, thus some companies have seen this as a loophole to avoid their obligations. However, Said bin Naser Al Sadi, advisor to the Minister of Manpower, told Times of Oman that the ministry will stand with workers, not bosses, if it can be proved the amnesty has been abused. He said: “If a worker approaches us with such complaints with tangible evidence, then we will probe the case and if their claims are genuine, we will stand with them and fight for their rights in the court. Whenever an overstaying expatriate approaches us, we look into his issues and then sort it out.”

According to three Asian country embassies in Oman, around 21,000 overstaying migrant workers have left Oman using the amnesty which was announced in May this year. The amnesty was extended for another three months in July, which will come to an end on October 31. “We have learnt from our earlier mistakes. We want to streamline the job market,” the advisor added. An official from the Bangladesh embassy said that around 14,353 Bangladeshis have left Oman making use of the amnesty. “Around 8,000 are waiting for their turn to complete the procedures and fly back home,” the official added. While an official from Pakistan embassy said that around 4,000 Pakistanis have left Oman and 500 more are waiting, an Indian embassy official said that a total

of 2,937 Indians have registered with the Indian embassy to avail of the amnesty. “The exact figures of those who have actually left Oman under the amnesty is not available with us,” the Indian embassy official said. The previous amnesties were granted in 2005, 2007 and 2010. “It’s good to know that many are turning up to make use of the amnesty. Around 25,000 overstaying from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan have made use of amnesty in 2010 which also lasted for six months officially,” Shaji Sebastin, a Muscat-based social worker said, urging that those who are overstaying should come forward and make use of the amnesty. When the amnesty was announced, the three Asian countries had estimated that at least 50,000 overstaying migrant workers in Oman would make use of the scheme.
