reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: All fuel prices in Oman went up at midnight as the roll-out of the new M91 fuel left some petrol station owners confused. The Ministry of Oil and Gas announced that the country’s new fuel—M91—will cost 173 baisas a litre. That’s four baisas more than the regular fuel it is replacing, which is M90. The price of Super grade petrol was hiked to 183 baisas from 179 per litre and a litre of diesel now costs 187 baisas, up from 185 baisas. M90 has now been replaced with M91, according to the ministry. Orpic, Oman’s national refining and petrochemicals firm, confirmed on Sunday that MOGAS 91 or M91 fuel will be available from November 1. According to Orpic, the fuel looks set to master the market in Oman, with up to 85 per cent of all cars on Oman’s roads being able to use it. >A4

have detained a number of suspects

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: A number of men have been detained by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) over the alleged sexual assault and murder of a Filipina hotel waitress in Muscat. The management of the Qurum hotel, where the victim Pinky Pamittan worked, reported her missing last Thursday after she failed to turn up for work for two days. She was a bar/restaurant employee at the hotel, popular with tourists.

Police in Boushar launched an investigation and her body was found dumped in a wadi behind the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque on Friday. “More than one, maybe three” men have been arrested in connection with her death, according to police. “She was found on Friday and was working as a waitress in a hotel restaurant. So far we don’t know the cause of death, but her body is in the morgue. Initial reports suggest that she was kidnapped and raped.” “The incident most probably occurred on Wednesday after the management reported

solve as soon as possible. I’m coming there.” She added that Pinky was about to celebrate her 32nd birthday, on November 6, and thanked everyone for the support shown to her and her family. Her stunned friends back home posted messages under the hashtag #JusticeforPinky on Facebook and called for media support to highlight her case. “She was my best friend. We did schooling together. It is shocking to hear about the tragedy. I am in touch with her husband and others,” Michelle Carnate, Pamittan’s friend, told the Times of Oman. >A4

Mwasalat currently manages around 212 school buses for the Ministry of Education, 35 buses for a private school and 85 buses from universities. Dismissing claims that the bus, where a toddler died on Sunday belonged to Mwasalat, Ahmad bin Ali Al Bulushi, chief executive officer of Mwasalat, said all its school buses have safety precautions in place. “A button is located in the back

a missing person on Thursday. The police were only able to find her on Friday thrown in a wadi near the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque,” the ROP spokesman added. Pamittan had travelled to Oman to work in the tourism industry so that she could earn money to support her young son, back home in the Philippines, who is with his father. gautam@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: A flat in a building opposite the Oman Commercial Centre, popularly known as OC Centre in downtown Ruwi was gutted by a fire that started at around 8.45am yesterday. Fire engines and emergency services rushed to flat number 51 on the fifth floor of Hussam Towers in Ruwi when they were alerted about the incident. Rented out by a long-time resident of the building, Jinesh Prasad Mishra, the flat caught fire in the early hours of the morning

with their only child, a daughter, who is in grade 9, being at home because of the Diwali holidays, while both Mishra and his wife were at work. “The daughter came to my house and knocked on the door, she told me there was a fire,” said Jayachandran, a neighbour who lives on the same floor. “I entered their house and saw the curtains and half the bed was on fire.” “I immediately went back home and brought my fire extinguisher, but it was of no use. I then used another extinguisher but that didn’t help either. Then I tried to throw a bed sheet of mine over the fire, but that too didn’t stop the blaze.” >A5
