Independent body sought to protect rights of domestics REJIMON K
reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Oman trade union leaders have called upon the government to set up an independent body to protect domestic workers’ rights in the Sultanate. “The government should constitute an independent body which can stand up for the rights of domestic workers in Oman. This will help them feel more secure,” Saud Salmi, a trade union leader in Oman, told Times of Oman. “Domestic workers are the most vulnerable to abuse. Moreover, their voices are not heard,” Saud said, adding domestic workers’ rights should be added in the new labour law. There were 242,019 domestic workers in Oman, including 132,164 females as of December, 2014, according to available data. Another trade union leader

said that he has come across many cases of abuse of domestic workers. “Many fail to respect the services of housemaids. We should treat them as human beings and pay them decently for their services. Unfortunately, some don’t. Moreover, they abuse these poor
workers also. So, if the government comes forward for setting up an independent body for these workers, it would be of great help. It can help these workers feel secure,” Mohammed Al Khaldi, board member of General Federation of Oman Trade Union (GFOTU), told Times of Oman. “Majority of the cases arise for non-payment of wages. Last year, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries discussed about unified job contracts, but it didn’t materialise. At least Oman government should initiate this, fix a minimum wage for domestic workers and show an example to others,” Mohammed added. It is estimated that there are 2.4 million domestic workers in the six GCC countries. Last week, Kuwait’s National Assembly passed a law regulating the labour rights of domestic workers. >A6

Companies have been warned that new rules will punish the firms which don’t pay wages into banks
MUSCAT: Companies which do not pay their employees’ salaries through the banking system will be fined, and even face closure, under tough rules set to be brought in to enhance the Wage Protection System (WPS). In line with Article 53 of the Labour Law, the WPS was introduced in January 2014 by the Ministry of Manpower and the
Central Bank of Oman (CBO), making wage payment in the private sector mandatory through authorised banks to ensure the employees’ rights and prevent labour-related problems. In an exclusive interview with Times of Oman, Suhail Al Khusaibi, head of the WPS programme at the Ministry of Manpower, said at the moment there is no punishment for companies which do not comply with the rules, for a number of reasons. >A6
