“Collecting money as per the new tax system at check-in counters will be an inconvenience for passengers and us. So, we advise them to contact us in advance if their tickets do not include the new tax,” said B B Kulkarni, country manager of Air India and Air India Express.

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Passengers will be paying out an extra OMR1.2 million per month after Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) raised its departure tax, and flyers are already being forced to shell out new charges. Airlines have started to collect the extra money at check-in counters and in offices from departing international passengers, who have not paid it because they purchased the tickets before the tax was brought in yesterday, said travel agents and airline officials. “We have started to collect the extra OMR3 as per the new tax system at the check-in counters at the airport from those who did not pay while purchasing tickets,” said Riyaz Kuttery, general manager, Jet Airways Oman. “At our offices also, we are informing passengers purchasing

tickets about the tax,” he said. The OAMC had issued a circular stating that from March 2 onwards, all international departing passengers will have to pay OMR8 and transit passengers will have to pay OMR1 as new passenger charges. Avoiding inconvenience A top official from Air India said that passengers who have not paid the new tax have to contact the Air India office or travel agents from where the tickets were purchased to avoid inconvenience at the last minute.

Extra earnings Meanwhile, data reveals that airports in Muscat and Salalah together can earn around OMR1.2 million per month extra with the new tax system. In total, 403,761 departing international passengers from Muscat and Salalah airports in January paid OMR2.01 million under the old tax system, the new amount with the increase of OMR3 will make it OMR3.2 million. “If we consider the number of departing passengers in January as a basis for calculation, then also the OAMC will be able to earn an extra OMR1.21 million,” said a travel agent. “In addition to this, when transit passengers pay OMR1 each as per the new tax system, the total amount collected will be OMR1.21 million,” added the travel agent. >A6 FIRST LARGE-SCALE PLANT

MUSCAT: Work on Oman’s first large-scale wind energy project will start in June this year, a top-level official at the Rural Areas Electricity Company (Raeco) told journalists here on Monday. The $200 million-project, which will generate 50 megawatt of electricity, will be funded by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar). The ambitious project, which is aimed at reducing dependence on conventional gas-fired power projects, has reached the tendering stage and a contract to build the project will be awarded by the end of the month, said Raeco chief executive officer Eng. Hamad bin Salim Al Maghderi. “Several international firms are bidding for the project,” he said, adding, “We are expecting to start the work in June and complete the work by 2016.” >A6

FAHAD AL MUKRASHI

fahad@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Indian schools in and around Darsait area will be told to put a cap on intake of new admissions to ease traffic congestion, said a source from the Muscat Municipality. “The decision has been taken in today’s meeting to tell the Indian schools in Darsait to cut down on the number of students and also to put a cap on new admissions,” said the source. “Moreover, to ease traffic congestion in the area, the schools should provide a school bus system and also find out certain assembly points to drop and pick up students,” added the source. There are around 13,000 students in different schools in and around Darsait. A majority of the children travel to and from school in private cars, which eventually leads to chaos during peak hours. “We have also decided to urge the Indian School authorities to speed up work on both schools in Bausher and Amerat. Residents of Mabelah and Seeb area have to enrol their children only in the Indian schools at Mabelah and Seeb. They should not try to enrol

their wards in the Indian schools in Darsait,” added the source. Moreover, the Municipal Council, along with the municipality, has decided not to allow any further expansion of the existing Indian School buildings in Darsait. Currently, to enter and exit areas in Darsait near the schools during working hours, it takes at least an hour with long queues of cars seen. According to the source, a request will be made to the Royal Oman Police to provide more policemen in the area to regulate traffic. New roads will also be constructed to ease traffic congestion. Meanwhile, speaking to the Times of Oman, Wilson George, chairman of Indian Schools in Oman, said they have been receiving communications from the municipality and the Ministry of Education in the past regarding traffic issues. “We have already initiated numerous measures and will continue to do so. We are aware that numbers in the Indian School Muscat are pretty high and we have already planned to reduce them in this facility,” said the chairman.
