Get ready for November 14 ‘extra-super moon’ Omani fishermen REJIMON K CHIEF REPORTER

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Start preparing for November 14, when the moon will be at its closest to earth since 1948. If you miss it, then your next similar chance will come on November 25, 2034. According to the Unites States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the moon will appear up to 14 per cent

bigger and 30 per cent brighter than an average full moon during the event on November 14. However it’s not always easy to tell the difference. A 30 per cent difference in brightness can easily be masked by clouds or the competing glare of urban lights. “On November 14, it becomes full... arguably making it an extra-super moon,” NASA said. The Moon will be 356,509 kilometres closer to that day. According to EarthSky.org, the moon will turn precisely full

on November 14, 2016 at 13:52 UTC (Oman local time 7pm). “This full moon instance will happen in the morning hours before sunrise in western North America and the Pacific islands (to the east of the International Date Line). But no matter. The moon will look plenty full and bright all night long on both nights–November 13 and 14– as it rises in the east around sunset, climbs highest up around midnight, and then sets in the west,” EarthSky.org added.

net a fortune at sea HASAN SHABAN AL LAWATI

MUSCAT: Fisherman Khalid Al Sinani has spent his entire adult life on the seas around Oman, hoping every new day would be the day he lands his dream catch. Last week, his boat finally came in. Khalid’s life is about to take a dramatic turn for the better after he found ambergris, a rare and sought after wax-like substance, during a routine fishing trip in Qurayat. Ambergris is a very costly wax that originates as a secretion in the intestines of the sperm whale. It can be found floating in tropical seas and is used in manufacture of perfume. One kilo can sell for OMR13,000. Khalid hauled in 80kgs. After 20 years of hand-to-mouth life as a fisherman, Al Sinani’s childhood dream of winning the sea lottery had come true on the morning of October 30 when he, along with two of his friends, saw a mass of ambergris floating on the sea, releasing a nasty smell. “We used a rope to collect it and carry it inside the boat,” Al

Sinani said. “I was told earlier that ambergris has an icky smell, but after a couple of days it imparts a pleasant scent,” he explained. “We rushed back to the beach with joy and happiness.” After keeping his valuable harvest in a box, he called some experts to identify the material. >A6
