rising numbers

MUSCAT: Thousands of students face an uncertain future as the crisis deepens among Indian schools which are again looking at up to 55 children in a classroom. School admission prospects for nearly 50 per cent of Indian children in Oman look bleak as the number of applicants for new admissions is double the tentative vacancy list for the coming year. “There is a 10 per cent rise in the number of applications for fresh admissions this year. The schools in the capital together have got nearly 5,000 applications and we are working on various possibilities to offer admissions to all. But it may not be as per their first choice,” Wilson George, chairman of the board of Indian Schools in Oman, told the Times of Oman. The tentative list of Indian schools in Oman shows that there are only around 2,400 seats

available for all classes, including morning and afternoon shifts. The six Indian schools in the capital are in Muscat, Darsait, Ghubra and Wadi Kabir in addition to Seeb and Mabelah. On an average, around 50 to 55 students are accommodated in junior classes in some of the Indian schools in Muscat due to space constraints. On Monday, the Muscat Municipality and Municipal Council in a joint meeting decided to convey to the Indian schools in and

around Darsait to cap the intake of new admissions to ease traffic congestion. There are around 13,000 students in the two Indian schools in and around Darsait and residents have complained about the traffic chaos caused during working hours. Speaking about the plans to bring down the number, the chairman said this year they have decided not to take the same number of children in lower classes on par with the num-

ber of those who pass out from higher classes. “Every year, around 400 students pass out from higher classes from the Indian School Muscat. So, eventually there will be 400 vacancies available in the lower classes. However, we have agreed not to fill all 400 vacancies, so as to keep the numbers down. Moreover, we have permission to have different sessions in some other schools and expansions are progressing there too,” added the chairman. >A6

DEFINING MOMENT

Can Oman oil sector weather low price storm? SALEH AL SHAIBANY

saleh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: It is going to be a tough year and perhaps beyond 2015 for Oman’s oil industry for both suppliers and producers, as low oil prices show no signs of recovery, delegates at an oil seminar said yesterday. Officials and experts were in agreement that there are challenges that the local energy industry must resolve but warned both contractors and producers must work together to weather the low oil prices storm. “It is a crisis but the message is very clear to all companies in the oil industry that we must identify opportunities in this difficult time. If we enjoyed the benefits when the oil prices were high, we must accept the challenge now that the

oil prices are down. Now we have to see things differently,” Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, undersecretary of Oil and Gases, told delegates at an oil industry seminar at Grand Hyatt Hotel yesterday. He added that this was a particularly defining moment to test the relationship between the government and the contractors in the oil industry. “We have to see whether our relationship with contractors is solid or not about costs, best practices;

whether they are cutting corners or take short cuts. They (contractors) need to be professional by working together to overcome the low oil prices challenges,” Al Aufi pointed out. But the undersecretary’s biggest concern was the job security of Omani workers in the oil industry. “If Omanis are to lose their jobs, we want to be informed. Contractors must tell us about it so we can work together in this respect,” he added. Raoul Restucci, Petroleum Development Oman’s (PDO) Managing Director, said that this year would be particularly difficult for Oman’s oil industry but urged contractors to be positive and stay on track. “It’s going to be a very difficult second quarter or third quarter or even 2015 but we are repositioning ourselves for the challenge

and stay on track on the lower oil price situation. I don’t see this as a crisis but it is challenging times. Oil prices at $50 or $60 per barrel is a tough going but it will pick up just as fast. At PDO, we are up to the task with our EOR (Enhance Oil Recovery) programme,” Restucci said. Other producers in the country echoed similar sentiments. The local subsidiary of oil giants Occidental said it has already taken measures to offset the lower oil prices situation. “It is a tricky situation and we are re-engineering and re-designing ourselves. We also need to be efficient and reduce costs. We have to sustain productions by reevaluating our operations,” Said Al Balushi, technical senior vice president of Occidental Oman, said in his address to the delegates.
