Sub-letting homes is illegal in Oman, says Municipality RAHUL DAS FAHAD AL GHADANI
MUSCAT: Homeowners, and even tenants, have been warned that sub-letting of properties to third parties such as tourists is illegal. An official at the Muscat Municipality said many people defy the authorities by offering their homes up for rent ahead of the summer vacations, when they travel, especially on websites such as Airbnb.com, a growing phenomenon in many parts of the world.
The website currently has 80 properties listed for rent in Oman, starting from around OMR20 per night, allowing people to select an entire villa, private room or bunk beds on the terrace online. Experts say tenants could be liable for huge fines if the lease is not licensed, amid a series of legal challenges against Airbnb overseas, including in New York and Spain. In Muscat, tenants subletting flats without the consent of the municipality or from their landlord can be evicted and can attract large penalties. >A6

MUSCAT: Summer is never easy in Oman, but the weathermen are warning that this year the Sultanate is in for a long hot spell with temperatures consistently reaching up to 49 degree Celsius throughout June and July. “This is due to the dry wind coming from the north western part of the country. From August onwards, the mercury levels may start to dip from what it is now,” said an official from the Oman meteorological department. On Tuesday, temperatures were hovering at around 49°C in Khasab, Sunyanah and Fahud, apart from Adam and Al Mudhaibi. “The entire region is suffering from dry wind. The temperature recordings are almost the same everywhere in the region,” added the official. On Wednesday, the meteorological department recordings showed that the temperature at Fahud was 47° Celsius, the highest till noon. For tomorrow, it has predicted temperatures of 45°C, but Accuweather.com recorded 50°C in Ibri on Wednesday. Meteorologists from AccuWeather, the American media company that provides commercial weather forecast services worldwide, said that the present

conditions in Oman will continue until mid-June, but that there may be some respite sooner. “Temperatures for the region may climb a few degrees higher over the coming weeks. However, the high temperature, at least in Muscat, occurs in mid-June. So there are chances of extreme heat dropping off by the end of the month. That said, we will be looking at warmer than normal temperatures for much of the summer, and a few highs near 50°C for the region are certainly possible. However, 55°C will be difficult to achieve, and as of now AccuWeather is not predicting any 55°C highs, in any of the major cities in the Arabian Peninsula,” said Evan Duffey, meteorologist at AccuWeather. Asked whether it would be the worst summer in Oman’s history, Duffey said the temperature over the past few months has been warm but not extreme. “Temperatures in Muscat since May 1 have only averaged 1.7°C above normal. The real heat wave began in Muscat on May 24 and since then temperatures have averaged 3.8°C above normal,” added Duffey. >A3
