FROM THE WORDS OF HIS MAJESTY THE SULTAN
On the occasion of the 10th National Day
‘His Majesty’s Wisdom’ We have much indeed to be thankful for. But while it is right that we should draw confidence and strength from our achievements, it is to the future that we must turn our eyes and harden our resolve. We must not for one moment relax that effort or allow ourselves to think that our task is done

MUSCAT: Two families are suffering today; one prays for the recovery of a woman fighting for her life, another is grieving for the death of their loved one in the road smash which unites both victims. It is an all too familiar story. Oman is, sadly, no stranger to road tragedy, but it is one which has sparked a debate, and a warning from police, after CCTV footage of the moment of collision was uploaded to social media and
shared widely online. The video footage was leaked from cameras of a fuel station capturing the intensity of the accident. However, shortly after it surfaced on a number of social media groups, it drew fire for being too graphic. Graphic content Some commentators said it should not have been posted at all. Others said there should have been a warning of graphic content. However, other voices pointed to the graphic images seen everyday on the media, whether it be plane crashes, the Syrian civil war, or the refugee toddler who drowned being carried from the waters. Speaking to the Times of Oman, a Royal Oman Police (ROP) official reminded the public that it had recently urged people through Twitter to not share any media on road accidents as it might cause grief for the victim’s family or lead to unwarranted rumours. An ROP source explained that uploading such videos is a punishable crime and that action can be taken if the victim’s family complains. “Action can only be taken
by the public prosecution,” he said, adding, “this is a punishable crime; the person who recorded the video can be punished for his individual act in case the victim’s family decides to complain to the public prosecutor”. The ROP source also said the punishment would depend on the level of harm caused by sharing such content. In this case, Times of Oman has decided to publish only a screen shot of the moments leading up to the crash, and has not carried the video on any of its platforms out of respect for the families. Talking about the accident, an ROP official said an Omani woman, who was driving from the Darsait traffic light towards the Muttrah port, lost control of her vehicle in Al Zahiya area near a petrol station, hitting into a flag pole, and then veering off the road and crashing into a car coming from the opposite direction. The Omani man who was driving the other car was killed on the spot, and the woman is battling for her life at the hospital, the ROP official said. >A4
THEFT FROM CAR
Expat businessman thanks ROP for arresting thieves TIMES NEWS SERVICE MUSCAT: An expatriate, who lost OMR14,700 in a car theft incident, has thanked the Royal Oman Police (ROP) for their efforts in arresting the thieves. “I sincerely thank ROP for their commendable job in arresting the criminals from far away countries,” said Mohammed Kabir Ahmed, managing director of United Dreams, whose money was stolen after the criminals smashed the window of the car. This is a story that must be shared in the Times of Oman’s #Oman Pride campaign, he said. The incident took place when Ahmed parked his vehicle in front of a bank in the CBD area of Ruwi and had gone to another

I then realised that I needed more money, so I went to another bank on foot to withdraw some more money,” Ahmed, who has been in construction, trading, earth works, hotel and restaurant businesses in Oman for the last three decades, recalled.
After 20 minutes, when he returned to his car after withdrawing OMR1,000, he discovered that someone had broken open the rear glass, opened the boot of the car, and stolen an envelope containing cash. Good news “I was in Spain when I got the good news. After coming back, I got in touch with ROP and they told us that with help of the Interpol, they had arrested the threemember gang, which was behind the theft,” Ahmed said. According to him, the theft was committed by three men, who had come to Oman on a tourist visa. “The ROP has managed to arrest them from another country,” he said. >A4

taqriqh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: “We are opening hopefully Muscat (airport) by quarter one or quarter two maximum (of) 2017,” said Sheikh Aiman Al Hosni, CEO of Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC). Al Hosni was speaking at a global conference for airport service managers that began in Muscat on Monday. He also revealed that the government had decided to build five new airports five years ago, and construction contracts for the Duqm and Sohar airports had already been awarded. “Contractors have started
work in Duqm already and we will start in Sohar shortly. Then we have Ras Al Hadd to complete,” he added. Al Hosni also pointed out that the Salalah airport had been operational since June this year, and the official opening would be held on November 11. He said discussions are on with the government to keep the present airport as terminal two for low-cost airlines. “We are still discussing that part,” he said. Al Hosni also revealed plans to expand the airport in five decades to increase passenger capacity, for which the first stage is under way, in which 12 million passengers are expected every year.
