Expats sending families home as money fears grow Some expats are opting for cheaper accommodation while others are either sending their families back home or have put on hold their visit to the Sultanate amid the austerity drive announced by the government
Expatriates in Oman are feeling the heat of austerity measures and are taking a number of steps to reduce spending and boost saving

babaumar@timesofoman.com reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Expatriates say they are sending their families back home, or halting plans to bring them to Oman, to cut the living costs after the Sultanate released its austerity-driven budget for 2016. Other families say they are moving to cheaper accommodation ahead of changes to the sub-
sidy on the price of oil recently announced, which they fear will drive up the cost of living. Indian expat, Ashraf Ahmed, who works at a cleaning service company at Wadi Al Qabir, told Times of Oman (TOO) that he can’t afford to keep his wife and three children in Oman anymore. “I am sending them back to Kerala (south Indian state),” he said, adding, his salary of OMR620 isn’t enough to make things work in the ongoing conditions.
His colleague Chandra, who lives in Al Khuwair, has already dispatched his family to India. “There were talks about upsetting economic condition here. That’s why I sent back my wife and two children. But I hope I will be able to bring them back again,” Chandra told TOO. Syed Tawheed, an FMCG supervisor at Swiss Arabian per-
fumes, said, “My parents and siblings were supposed to visit me for at least four months. But I have asked them to hold on for some time.” Tawheed said he applied for their visit visa in December last year but after the austere budget, he isn’t sure if they can really live with them amid the difficult economic situation. “I’m single and I know I won’t
be affected much. But people with visiting families or a wife and school-going children will have to think twice before shelling out money…this may, however, see increase in remittances,” he noted. Cheaper apartments One tactic being embraced by families trying to stay together is to move into cheaper accommodation. S Banerjee, a private firm staffer, who pays around OMR380 at Rex Road in Ruwi neighbourhood, said, “I am planning to move to an older apartment. That should help me save at least OMR70,” he said, adding, “I can always switch to a new building if things become normal again.” Pankaj R, who works in a publishing house, said he moved from his old apartment prior to budget announcements. >A6

Staff Reporter MUSCAT: Around 12,000 direct and 7,000 indirect jobs are expected to be created after the completion of an OMR500 million project that will transform the Port Sultan Qaboos into the region’s primary waterfront destination. The project consists of four zones and the first phase is expected to be complete in 2019, Minister of Transport and Communications Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi, said during a media briefing held at the ministry
on Monday. The first zone of the tourism-based mixed-use project will shape the waterfront’s heart and will consist of a fisherman wharf, a fish souq, a five-star marina hotel, a four-star family hotel, and a hotel operated by branded residential apartments and starter apartments for first time buyers. Destination shopping, waterside restaurants and cafes, boutiques, offices, entertainment and cultural facilities, as well as super yacht and leisure boat marina will also be featured in the first zone.
Half of the total investment amount will be allocated for the development of the first phase, the minister said. The total built-up area of the project will be around 450,000 square metres, and the project will include six hotels, residential units and many other components. One more hotel, which belongs to the Muscat Municipality, may be added later, Al Futaisi said. As for the components of the project, Dr Al Futaisi said that it would include “6” hotels of five, four and three-star that would
provide 1,500 hotel rooms, 65 apartments, 219 family residential units and other buildings, according to the ONA. A project specific “Waterfront Development and Operations Company” will be established for the implementation of the project, which is expected to be complete in 2027. The minister expressed hope that the company will be registered in three months. The project, which will generate revenues and profits starting from 2022. >A6
MUSCAT: A plan to develop a 200,000 square metres (sqm) parking area at the Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ) is expected to reduce congestion in the Muttrah area, Minister of Transport and Communications Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi said on Monday. Speaking at a press briefing to announce the PSQ waterfront project, Al Futaisi said, “The total built-up area will be around 450,000 sqm, plus 200,000 sqm allocated for parking. This 200,000 sqm parking will be divided into around 6,000 parking lots.” This is the minimum and more parking lots can be added later, the minister stated. He said the development of new parking area will help reduce gridlock in the Muttrah area, which is currently facing congestion problems due to insufficient parking space. The Sultanate plans to transform PSQ into the region’s primary waterfront destination and number one tourist attraction in the country. The project will blend traditional Omani heritage and aesthetics with modern technology and focus on maintaining sustainability and harmony with the environment. A Royal Decree had called for PSQ to be converted from a commercial port to a fully integrated tourist port by shifting all commercial import, export, general cargo and container activities to the Sohar Industrial Port.
