expats in the Sultanate, as per the Royal Orders of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. This is the first time in recent years that people have been given a longer holiday with a chance to relax, re-energise and enjoy the festive occasion with family and friends. Last year, the Eid Al Adha holiday had lasted just two days, or four if counting the weekend. The holiday is also a golden opportunity for people to leave the country with travel agencies expecting online and telephone bookings in the coming days. “I do expect a boom in bookings
TWO-WEEK TIME
hasan@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: People who bought Galaxy Note 7 in Oman will be allowed to replace their smartphones with new ones in two to three weeks, an official at Samsung Oman said. The company has already discussed the matter on Sunday with the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) following reports about the device’s faulty batteries that can catch fire and even explode. Shops have stopped selling Galaxy Note 7 all across the Sultanate and will only resume marketing the smartphone after receiving the new stock. “The new shipment will arrive in two weeks,” the source confirmed, explaining that Samsung immediately stopped the sale
days,” said Rajadurai. Deepal Pallegangoda, Country Manager of Mihin Lanka, said that they are fully booked from September 8 to 16. “This time, our flights to Sri Lanka and other connecting destinations too are fully booked. Sri Lanka has a lot to offer for visitors and we had marketed the same well in advance,” Deepal added. Though travelling is tempting enough, some argue that as some schools have just begun the new academic year, staycation is on the cards. >A6

within the next few days,” said Arun, Manager of the Holiday Division – Fayeda Travel and Tourism. “I believe it will be a good month for us,” added the confident travel agent. Speaking to Joe Rajadurai, Qatar Airways’ Country Manager in Oman, he said that many people are booking short-haul destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Maldives and Colombo. “As of now, we have some booked flights but not as much, but it happens every time that we will see a significant increase in bookings within the next two
when the problem cropped up. “Although the number of affected phones may seem like a drop of water in an ocean, Samsung will not take any risks as the consumers’ safety is a priority,” he stressed. The TRA issued a statement saying, “the TRA announces the suspension of applications for the type approval of the Samsung (Galaxy Note 7) due to the risks of the battery catching fire while charging. Should there be any update on this issue the TRA will advise the public of the same.” “Things go wrong. That’s the reality of life,” said Laura Ries, president of brand-strategy firm Ries & Ries. “What matters is how you deal with it. For a highend product, that means you go out of your way to give people replacements, get out in front and handle the problem.” >A5

GCC SURVEY
4.6% pay hike for workers expected next year: Survey TARIQ ZIAD AL HAREMI
tariqh@timesofoman.com
MORNING MINUTE
MUSCAT: Employees in the Sultanate could see a 4.6 per cent increase in salaries next year, according to a survey conducted by Aon Hewitt. In a GCC survey of 600 multinational companies and locally owned corporations, it is predicted that salary earnings will increase an average of 4.6 per cent. According to the GCC Salary Increase Survey, “Salaries have been largely influenced by fluctuating oil prices and states’ initiatives to diversify national economies.” “While 2016 proved to be a challenging period for economic expansion in some markets, over
the next few years new policies governing inflation, taxation, diversification and commodity pricing are anticipated to come into effect and lead to a general upswing in GCC salaries,” according to the study. According to the survey, a hike of 4.6 per cent is expected in 2017, as opposed to 4.2 per cent in 2016. Meanwhile, Ahmed Al Hooti, a board member of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that these situations, such as salary increases, are related to growth. “Everything like this is always linked to growth. If there is economic growth, and disregarding oil prices, you then depend on the true growth, the true economy,” said Al
Hooti. “The true economy means that you create big scale projects, your sector is active, and you have unlimited commercial activities. You shouldn’t be concerned with oil prices or government situations,” added Al Hooti. Robert Richter, GCC compensation Survey Manager – AON Hewitt Middle East, added, “Lower oil prices are likely to continue moderating the GCC’s economic growth this year, but a refreshed focus on non-oil sectors, along with sustained programmes of state investments, should underpin GDP expansion into 2017.” According to the survey, the highest salary increases in 2016 were seen in the pharmaceutical,
media, food, beverage and tobacco industries. The lowest salary increases were in telecommunications, construction, and oil and gas. However, the study indicates that pays in these sectors are expected to rise in 2017. “4.6 per cent will impact a lot of things. Look at the industries that have high Omanisation. “If you increase the salaries, the difference is going to come from the consumer,” said Emad, an Omani Business Owner. When asked whether it will have a negative impact on Oman, he said, “Sadly yes. The country needs more revenue entering it for sustained growth, otherwise it becomes a zero sum equation.. which is bad.”
