‘His Majesty’s Wisdom’ Oman can only continue her development, and enable her community to cope proficiently and keep pace with all the changes taking place around it, if she has young people of this kind – that is, ambitious young people with strong characters and a deep sense of responsibility and patriotism.

MUSCAT: Amid doom and gloom across the GCC driven by low oil prices, the Sultanate’s property market is still looking positive to Omani residential buyers and expatriate renters alike, according to the latest data released by one of Oman’s major real estate companies. ERA-Oman has just completed its fourth quarter ‘Market Overview’, which shows that rents are likely to remain stable, thumbs up if you are an expat renting, but equally healthy residential sales for Omanis wanting to buy are being driven by affordable and accessible finance offered by banks, especially due to growth of Islamic finance. Its eight-page report details where it says are the most popular one and two-bedroom rental locations across Muscat, and what tenants can expect to
INSPIRING YOUNG WINNER
In a first, Omani national bags ‘Unsung Hero Award’ TARIQ AL HAREMI
tariqh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Yahya Al Hatmi is the first Omani working in the Sultanate to be recognised with the “Unsung Hero Award”, presented at the Hotelier Middle East ceremony in Dubai. His seniors are of the view that Al Hatmi has always won people over with his positive attitude and cheerful demeanour. #Omanpride features this inspiring young winner, who believes that the hard work he puts in now will help him climb the corporate ladder at his workplace. “It does not make a difference whether you are a manager, supervisor or a room attendant. What counts is the difference you make in your work environment,” said Al Hatmi, who has been working at the Intercontinental Hotel for around two years. Better performance “Some people come in to work, complete their hours and go home, while others make an effort to develop their abilities and perform better. I believe I would be placed in the latter category because I want to make a difference,” he added. The “Unsung Hero of the Year” award, according to Hotelier Middle East’s website, is awarded to

THE HOME OF GOOD NEWS
#OMANPRIDE “the real unsung heroes; those that chop vegetables all day, sweep lobby floors, valet parked cars, clean rooms, and always manage to have a smile on their
face, and have a ‘can do’ attitude”. Al Hatmi said he always makes enough effort to do his job professionally and always ensures that the guests have a good experience, adding that positive customer feedback had helped him win the award and that he is grateful for it. When the Times of Oman asked him a sensitive question about being tipped and how he felt about it, he said he tried as much as he could to refuse tips, simply because he is just doing his job. Although it’s not necessary to tip, guests and customers find it customary and it shows appreciation for the level of service received. “I try as much as I can to kindly refuse any tips from my customers so that they feel I’m just doing my job. I always tell my guests, ‘This is my job sir/ma’am, you don’t have to give me anything’”, said Al Hatmi. “Sometimes they keep insisting and when I do take the tip, I just consider it a small token of appreciation based on my service,” he added. He also mentioned that it does not feel right to take tips from guests when he is getting a fixed salary. “I always try to be hospitable and treat my guests nicely to gain their loyalty for the hotel and not for tips,” Al Hatmi explained. >A4
ARABIAN SEA
Low pressure to bring rain STAFF REPORTER
MUSCAT: A low pressure system has formed over the south-west of the Arabian Sea and is moving in the north-west direction, a tweet posted by the Public Authority for Civil Aviation, stated. “There is a feature that we are watching, which is developing off southwest India. It may develop into a tropical depression or a weak tropical cyclone later this
week or weekend. It will follow a track similar to Chapala, but this feature will not be nearly as strong,” Jason Nicholls, senior meteorologist from Accuweather.com told the Times of Oman. Rain “This low pressure system will bring some rain to Yemen and perhaps southern Oman around Monday or Tuesday of next week,” Jason added.

pay, starting from a minimum of OMR350 for a one-bedroom and up to OMR900 for a two-bed room in premium properties. Good news It also reports good news for property buyers with prices set to maintain their levels, but not rise significantly in 2016. While this is less good news for anyone wanting to make a quick profit, it will encourage more young Omanis to take their first step on the property ladder, especially as banks are helping them achieve that goal through access to lowcost lending. Hassan Mohammed Juma,
ERA-Oman’s Managing Director, said: “We see the role of the banks as very helpful to sustaining the performance of the property market for the remainder of this year and throughout 2016. “We manage approximately 1,800 properties and we look at the portfolio we are seeing stability in the rental levels, no drops. We are still signing contract renewals with no problem. Supply will continue to increase though so we will be monitoring that on a quarter by quarter basis.” ERAOman’s report is in stark contrast to other GCC markets which are experiencing much more volatility due to oil prices. >A7
