DEBATE ON DRESS: Expats and tourists have been urged to respect the country’s dress code.

Expats called on to respect dress code Debate over what some tourists and expat residents wear in public places has reopened on social media

MUSCAT: A debate over the way expats dress in Oman, and whether there should be stricter regulation for both tourists and residents, has reopened after the issue was highlighted on social media. Male and female visitors to public places in the Sultanate should respect the cultural values of the country, people from different walks of life say unanimously,

while expressing differing opinions on the need for a dress code. Some also believe that more awareness should be created among visitors through distributing information materials at various locations. The discussion on dress code was prompted once again after a man was stopped at City Centre Muscat for wearing shorts. The person had complained that he was singled out while there were many other people wearing shorts in the mall. In a statement, a spokesperson for Majid Al Futtaim, which owns and operates the mall, said, “City Centre Muscat highly values its visitors’ feedback, and we are sorry that the customer in this instance was dissatisfied with the handling of a recent visit to the mall by a member of our security staff.” Courtesy policy “All of Majid Al Futtaim’s shopping malls have a courtesy policy in place, which is in line with the government policy on dress codes, to guide our visitors in wearing

clothing that is culturally appropriate, and ensuring the comfort of all guests,” the statement read. The spokesperson added, “We do continually review City Centre Muscat’s policies in line with customer feedback and will consider these comments carefully to ensure that we are in line with our visitors’ expectations and government policy.” Respecting local culture Ligi George from the public relations section of the Women’s Guild in Oman (WGO), said people should respect the local customs and traditions, adding that there are various ways to create more awareness. “The dress code policy in the Sultanate is by and large mentioned clearly in many malls and other public places. While some places may not have specified a dress code, a majority of expatriates and visitors in the country dress themselves moderately in accordance with the local customs,” George told the Times of Oman (TOO). >A6 TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES

Dreamliner soon on Muscat-London route Times News Service MUSCAT: British Airways’ (BA’s) new 787-9 Dreamliner will start flying from Muscat and Abu Dhabi to London’s Heathrow Airport from November 6. Travel agents in Oman said that by including the Dreamliner aircraft on the Muscat route, BA is trying to compete with other Gulf carriers that operate the Dreamliner and Airbus 380 aircraft to various destinations across Europe. “Now, the passengers from Muscat will have a choice in whether they want to travel in a Dreamliner or an Airbus 380 to Europe,” said Lohithakshan Kizhakkayil, a travel consultant at New Star International Travel

and Tour LLC. The agents also pointed out that travelling in the Dreamliner would be more comfortable as they have dimmable windows, and facility to adjust cabin pressure and humidity to comfortable levels compared to other planes. “Besides that, it can carry more passengers,” another travel agent said. Interestingly, Qatar Airways has already introduced the Dreamliner service in Oman, with two flights departing from the Muscat International Airport every day. The Muscat-Abu Dhabi announcement comes on the back of BA confirming that the first route to benefit from its new aircraft will be Delhi from October 25.>A6

A number of suggestions were discussed, including issuing new licences to network providers, lowering call charges for mobile phones and internet data usage and strengthening 4G signals in all wilayats in Muscat governorate to provide the best service to subscribers. >A2
