Just a few days after medics told her father she had a 10 per cent chance of surviving 70 per cent burns from a car fire, Ghazal is breathing, eating and smiling all on her own. Ghazal and her brother Suleiman were pulled from their burning family car at a Sur filling station on August 24 after their father had gone to buy groceries. Equipment removed Her father revealed she is now out of immediate danger and medical equipment attached to her tiny frame for the past five weeks has now been removed. She is even eating a little. As recently as seven days ago, her father Mohammed wrote a letter to hospital doctors begging them to do all they could and Ghazal’s future looked bleak. The doctors in-charge of her care had told him she had just a 10 per cent shot at surviving, given her tender years and the 70 per cent burns covering her body. “She is much better and she’s able to eat now, albeit a little, at least something is entering her stomach. All the support machines have been removed, only the ones for monitoring are still on,” said her father. >A6 TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES

Her three-year-old brother Suleiman was released from hospital two weeks ago and is recovering at home. Ghazal, however, still has a mountain to climb. Her open wounds are cleaned for four hours every day and the smallest microbe could still take her young life, but that doesn’t stop Ghazal smiling from ear to ear in her hospital bed, surrounded by new toys.

CUP OF TREE
Omani students design environment-friendly coffee, tea cups HASSAN SHABAN AL LAWATI
hassan@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: If you love the environment and having coffee or tea, then this product might be your “cup of tree.” A group of Omani students have good news for coffeeholics as they have introduced a paper cup that can be planted in the soil and can grow to produce arugula and radish. The environment-friendly product called ‘Naf’ has proved to be a hit amongst companies in the Sultanate as students have received orders for 11,000 cups, according to Hala Al Rashdi, a member of a student-run company. “We are planning to earn prof-

it by charging firms for placing their advertisements on the cups’ sleeve, while we distribute them at local coffee shops,” she explained. A designer and 14 students from the Sultan Qaboos University have
started their ambitious project last April, and are planning to go commercial soon. The group consists of six boys and eight girls from the colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, Com-
merce and Science. The steps on how to plant the cup will be printed on the sleeves. Each cup will include seeds in its base and only needs to be buried slightly beneath the ground
and should be watered daily for it to grow into a plant. Al Rashdi explained that the project will contribute to making Oman greener by increasing the number of people who plant trees. “We have a considerable number of people who are fans of coffee/tea,” Al Rashdi said, adding that these cups might help develop a new habit. “People will see how amazing it is to see your plant growing,” she said. Al Rashdi explained that the company’s main objective is to raise awareness about environment and to make Oman greener. The team is currently reaching out to customers through social media and personal marketing.
