Employers drag labour disputes to courts where employees are forced into a long legal battle causing more miseries to them in a foreign land

MUSCAT: Some workers in Oman are living on the street without food for up to two years because employers are delaying or failing to turn up to dispute hearings. Employers failing to attend settlement meetings at labour dispute departments and the cases moving to court is leaving employees in the lurch, say trade union leaders, social workers and embassy officials. “In the current mechanism, employers are not bound to attend the settlement meetings

He is waiting for the judgment to be executed,” Shaji said, adding that Parvesh’s case is not an isolated one. >A5

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Despite a baggage belt breakdown at Muscat airport and delays at Dubai Airport forcing airlines to reschedule and cancel flights from Muscat yesterday morning, Oman Airport’s departure status by Saturday evening revealed that operations are getting back to normal. All flights to Dubai on Saturday afternoon departed on time and other flights scheduled for today evening are ready to fly according to normal schedules. However, Oman Air tweeted that due to Dubai Airport restrictions, the airline was forced to cancel WY605/606 and WY623/624 on Saturday. A travel agent in Muscat said that flights to Muscat are still suffering disruptions.

Staff Reporter MUSCAT: Rescue teams from the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) have found the body of a man near Raysut on Saturday, the authority tweeted. STUDY

Parents of autistic children suffer from depression Staff Reporter MUSCAT: Almost half of all parents of autistic children in Oman suffer from depression, according to a recent report published by the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). The report revealed that 46 per cent of the caregivers of CASD (Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder) were noted to have depression. According to the report, all in-

dices of stress, depression, and anxiety were higher in CASD, compared with other caregivers in the control group and it added that, therefore, there are strong grounds to contemplate a mechanism to help such a vulnerable group of family caregivers. Previous studies carried out in Euro-American populations have also unequivocally indicated that psychological disorders for caregivers of CASD

are marked with high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Intellectual disabilities The study aimed to examine whether there is variation in the performance of indices of stress, depression, and anxiety explored via depression, anxiety and the Stress Scale 21 among caregivers of CASD, caregivers of children with intellectual disabilities, and caregivers of typi-

cally developing children. Omani researchers had three aims. The first aim of the study was to compare the socio-demographic indices between CASD and parents of non-ASD children. The second aim was to explore the performance of indices of stress, depression, and anxiety among CASD and parents of nonASD children. The third aim was to delineate the relationship between ASD and

indices of stress, depression, and anxiety after adjusting for potential confounders. The case–control study was designed to examine stress, anxiety, and depression among parents of children, with and without diagnosed ASD. In conclusion, the study indicated that caregivers of ASD are noted to have adverse psychological states that manifest as stress, depression, and anxiety. >A6
