While 109 firms followed the rule out of the 125 companies which were visited, 16 companies were found violating the midday break in 2016

fahadnews@timesofoman.com rahuldas@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Sixteen companies have already been fined in the first six days of the midday break law. Inspectors have already raided 125 construction sites over the first six days of the rule, which came into effect on June 1. The rule, which is effective from June 1 until the end of August, bans work at outdoor sites between 12.30pm and 3.30pm when the summer heat is at its peak. By Sunday, temperatures in Oman

are expected to hit 43 degree Celsius. “We took action against 16 companies out of the 125 companies we visited,” said Salim Al Badi, director general of labour welfare at the Ministry of Manpower. All these violations took place in the first six days of the month, when the inspection teams visited several companies in Oman. According to Salim Al Badi, fines have been slapped on the companies that were found flouting the rule. “While 109 firms followed the rule out of the 125 companies which were visited, 16 companies were found violating the midday break in 2016,”

he added. He didn’t specify how much fines the companies were told to stump up. In 2015, 391 companies were penalised by the ministry for violating the midday break rule which included 138 businesses in Amerat, 122 in Seeb, 98 in Bausher and 33 in Muttrah. Mohammed Al Zadjali, head of the legal committee of Majlis Al Shura, said companies can be penalised with fines ranging from OMR100 to OMR500, or a jail term of not more than one month, or both, according to the Article 118 of the Oman Labour Law, companies can be penalized. >A7

MUSCAT: News that an Omani village has only three fasting hours every day is untrue, according to the Ministry of Tourism. Newspapers and TV channels, including Al Arabiya, reported on Monday that the remote village of Wakan, located 150km from Muscat, has one of the shortest days in the world. It was mentioned that the sun rises at 11am and sets at around 2.30pm. “This is not possible. Even if it is difficult to see the sun in some mountainous areas, it doesn’t mean that the sun has not risen”

an official at the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs (MERA) told the Times of Oman. Nasser Al Riyami, member of the municipal council in the

Wilayat of Nakhl said that “the rumour is just funny”. “I don’t know the reason behind spreading such false news. We, the citizens of Wakan and Wadi mas-

tal villages fast like any other Muslims in the country,” he said. The rumour has been circulating on social media on the first day of Ramadan. The village is nestled in the wilayat of Nakhl in North Al Batinah governorate, nearly 2,000 metres above the sea level and is accessible only by donkeys, horses and four-wheel vehicles. Al Riyami said that Wakan is a small agricultural village which attracts many tourists from Oman and other GCC countries. The little village is famous for its fresh apricots, peaches, grapes and pomegranate, which, according to Al Riyami, grow during summer season.>A7
