reji@timesofoman.com fahadnews@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: A four-year-old girl who was allegedly left unattended on a bus owned by a training centre, reportedly died of suffocation in Bid Bid on Monday. Confirming the incident, a source at the Bid Bid police station said that investigations are already on. Yousif Ahmed, a Bid Bid resident, said the girl had been left unattended inside the bus and
might have suffocated to death. In July, in a similar incident, a six-year-old Omani boy and his cousin died after mistakenly locking themselves in a car, as their parents entertained guests in the Omani boy’s home. The boys were in the car for two hours. While one boy died inside the car, the other died later in the hospital. Police had said that the children suffocated due to the high
temperature inside the car. “Leaving children alone in a car or bus is unpardonable negligence. By doing that, we are inviting danger and risking their lives,” Mark Pudwell, training manager at Competence HR, told the Times of Oman. Dr Basheer, a senior internist at Badr Al Samaa Hospital in Ruwi, said that death due to suffocation or lack of oxygen inside a car can happen in any climate,
even during winter. But in this part of the world, cases like this occur mostly during the summer. “To avoid such tragedies, parents or guardians must make sure that all the passengers, mostly toddlers, are out of the vehicle before they lock it,” added Basheer. Meanwhile, Rajeev NS, who is running a transport firm for the last 30 years, said that extra care should be taken while transporting children. >A6
Transport law It also discussed the general transport law and the draft of the terrestrial transportation law. The need to ensure coordination with the municipality affairs committee with regard to improving some villages in the Wilayat of Muttrah was also discussed. It was also suggested during the meeting that Muscat Festival should be developed to attract more tourists and business in the Sultanate. The Municipal Council has recommended using the example of countries that have successfully adapted legislation to maintain cleanliness. >A6

Oman to get flash flood alert system Times News Service

MUSCAT: Oman will get an early warning system to predict flash flood three to six hours before it occurs, said Ahmed Al Barwani, water resources expert at the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources. “The model is expected to be ready in the next 12 months in cooperation with the meteorology department,” he said, while
presenting a paper on ‘Flood mitigation and management’, at the second edition of the Drainage Rehabilitation and Wastewater Management conference that opened in Muscat on Monday. Mohsin Mohamed Al Shaikh, chairman of Muscat Municipality, inaugurated the conference. Al Barwani said work on this has already been assigned to a consultant in California, US. Elaborating on flash flood, he
said that in areas of steep topography, in small drainage basins, and wadis, floodwaters can rise very quickly with little or no warning. “When floods tend to be intense, short-term event of high velocity, they are known as flash floods,” he said. The entire incident lasts only for four to six hours and damages usually begin to occur within an hour after heavy rainfall. “Here, the rainfall in arid areas
tend to be very localised, intense, and for short durations, falling on bare land with limited or sparse vegetative cover generating flash floods,” he explained. Floods are a natural phenomenon and unavoidable, so awareness is very important to avoid casualties, and people should follow the weather forecast. “We should not forget that floods can occur anytime, so we should be on alert,” he noted.
