‘His Majesty’s Wisdom’

Concern for the different forms of our national heritage, both tangible and intangible, has always been at the centre of our attention. The reason for this is the important role it plays in the enrichment of our intellectual and artistic life and in promoting creativity and innovation in society. We would like, therefore, to express our delight at the inclusion of several Omani cultural and natural sites on the World Heritage List. These sites provide clear evidence of the contribution made by Omanis throughout the ages in building civilizations and in interacting with other cultures.

hassan@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: A fire threat remains a major challenge for establishments in Oman, especially in the summer, an official has cautioned. “Unorganised and poorly marked storage of cables and flammable materials in any building raises the risk of damage by fire,” said Colonel Said Al Asmi, assistant general manager for Operations at the Royal Oman Police (ROP). Lack of proper safety precautions at some hotels, ports, banks and other facilities in Oman can put them at a risk of catching fire, Al Asmi said, adding that fire cases increase during summer

1 year plement it in the Sultanate now,” he asserted, adding that while the labour law can protect the private sector employees, it may not be possible in some cases. “In cases where contracts expire, it becomes difficult to protect the affected employee. These people end up with no job and no source of income,” said Al Battashi. He explained that such employees have several financial responsibilities to fulfil and sometimes even end up in jail. “Most of the employees who lose their jobs fail to pay their their financial dues and in most cases they require additional cash to pay lawyers to handle their legal cases in courts,” said Al Battashi. >A4

Al Wusta and Dhofar regions. The ministry will review the situation again on Wednesday. While heavy rain fell in Rustaq and surrounding areas on Monday, from Tuesday afternoon, heavy rain fell in Buraimi, Sohar, Nizwa, Ibri, Nakhal and Muscat. “It rained heavily in Buraimi, Sohar, Nizwa, Ibri and Nakhal in the afternoon. who lose their jobs is under discussion

MUSCAT: A ‘redundancy’ fund to support Omanis working in the private sector who lose their jobs is under active discussion, says a leading trade union official. The chairman of General Federation of Trade Unions in Oman, a representative body of private sector employees, said he met with the officials of Public Authority of Social Insurance, to discuss setting up of a Security Fund to finance Omani private sector employees who lose their jobs. “Employees registered under the social security records losing their jobs due to cost-cutting or non-renewal of contract upon its completion, could be financed 60 per cent of their salary for six months from the fund, from the day they go jobless,” said Nabhan Al Battashi, chairman of the Trade Union. “The proposal to pay 60 per cent of the salary is not fixed; it depends on the investment level of the fund in the future. It can be more or less than 60 per cent of the employee salary,” said Al Battashi. The Trade Union is also suggesting the period to be one year, instead of six months. “We feel six-month time is still not enough for employees who have lost their jobs. This period was arrived at after considering that such employees can find jobs, or may sort out the issues with the employers,” explained Al Battashi. “Such funds exist everywhere in the world and it’s time to im-

due to high temperatures. He was talking to the Times of Oman on the sidelines of the “Fourth Symposium on Security of Vital Installations’,” which commenced on Tuesday at the Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa. Al Asmi also delivered a lecture on “Planning security components” which, according to him, are measures aimed at protecting items, employees, data and costumers inside buildings, offices and storages. Other security risks include protests by workers inside or outside a facility, bomb threats, terrorism, destruction of data, spying, theft, alcohol or drug abuse while at work and natural dis-

asters. “However, fire incidents are the most repeated cases,” he pointed out. Oman records a fire case every three hours, according to a 2015 report by the National Centre for Statistics and Information. Reports show that 3,335 fire

incidents were reported in Oman in 2014, with 23 per cent of the incidents being reported in residential facilities. That year, 755 house fires, 55 cases of building fires and 57 cases of apartment fires were reported. Al Asmi also said many shops in Oman lack modern security technology. The symposium, which will continue until Thursday, will also discuss several other topics, such as best practices in security consultancy, transport security, importance of vehicle inspection and social media security monitoring. The event also showcases latest technology and devices used for security and can be deployed by authorities in Oman.
