government grants,
Assistant director general of employment at the Ministry of Manpower
say business leaders ELHAM POURMOHAMMADI elham@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: There is no need for a renewal of grants to job-seekers as it would be an extra burden on the government and would not help improve the work culture in Oman, say representatives of the business community. They believe that enhancing the skills of job seekers through training is a better option than giving them a monthly allowance. An official at the Ministry of
Manpower said that the government’s initiative to allocate a monthly grant to job-seekers was meant to enable and encourage ‘the initiators and active ones’ among them to take up available job opportunities. “This positive step assisted job-seekers until they got jobs, and, on realising that the initiative has achieved its goal, the government stopped disbursing this grant by the mid of 2014,” Yousuf Said Al Mutawa, assistant director general of employment at the
Ministry of Manpower, told the Times of Oman. Abdullah Al Jufaili, general manager of the Fund for Development of Youth Projects (Sharakah), believes that the ministry’s decision is a step forward to reduce the dependence of job seekers on the government. “Not everyone has the motivation to be completely independent,” he said, and added that some may be just relying on receiving everything on a ‘silver platter’.
So, stopping the allowance would mean that people have to stop being dependent and find a source of income, said Al Jufaili. The official believes that continuing to provide job-seekers with a regular allowance would only increase the ‘burden’ on the government as their number would keep increasing. Al Jufaili also said this was not a viable option as the government is investing in a number of projects in various sectors and is seeking ways to cover the ex-
penditure and recover from the unfavourable market conditions in 2008 and 2014. “So, I think there is enough of a burden on the government to cover such expenses. We should work towards empowering the nationals to be active and independent,” he said. Wrong message Amer Al Fadhil, managing director of Competence HR, one of the 30 successful candidates for the National CEO Programme, also believes that providing jobseekers with a monthly grant is not helpful. Giving a certain amount to people who are looking for a job does not send a positive message, he noted. Najim Al Kitani, managing partner at Biyaq Laboratories, a 100 per cent Omani-owned analytical laboratory service provider, says he personally thinks the government made the right decision by stopping the grant. More efforts There was a period when there was a need to support those seeking for jobs, especially the young people, and now ending it means encouraging job seekers to put in more efforts, he said. >A6

Sultanate to make its mark at sailing regatta
SARAH MACDONALD sarah@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Hot temperatures and high humidity this summer in Oman and the other GCC countries are resulting in more serious health risks for people with heart disorders, experts say. The latest figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that almost 40 per cent of mortality in the region was caused by cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), making the disease a prominent issue in Oman. The WHO estimates that 49 per cent of deaths from non-communicable diseases in Oman are due to cardiovascular diseases. Dr Benny Panakkal, chief cardiologist and group medical director, Badr Al Samaa said July was one of the worst months he’s seen for the number of heart attacks, due partly to the heat and to complications caused by people with CVDs fasting during Ramadan. “Last month we had a peak of

Nine Omanis were killed and 39 others were injured in the accident. The collision between a bus carrying 54 Omanis who were returning from Makkah after the Umrah pilgrimage and a truck parked at the road shoulder resulted in the death of seven people at the Al Oyoon Hospital in Al Ahsa. Two others died at the King Fahd Hospital. The bodies were brought back to Oman in a Royal Oman Air Force plane, while another plane brought

Fire A fire broke out at a factory in Al Ansab in the Muscat Governorate, according to the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA). The blaze was extinguished and no casualties were reported in the incident.
SALALAH: From tweeting emergency phone numbers to messaging safety tips and warnings about fog condition throughout the Khareef season in Salalah, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) is constantly using social media to engage and communicate effectively with the citizens and residents and help them keep safe. As a large number of visitors travel to and from Dhofar Governorate, the ROP strives to keep road travellers safe and promote road safety. Speaking to the Times of Oman, an ROP official said, “We came out with timely updates through social media to keep citizens informed and safe.” With Khareef Salalah almost coming to an end and Salalah Festival beginning, the ROP officials continue to be on high alert. The ROP’s Twitter account continues to issue messages to spread awareness, specifically targeted at drivers and visitors to Salalah, in view of sudden showers and fog. if he is not careful while driving along the mountains. The ROP constantly urges citizens to follow safety guidelines during their visit. They tweeted a post on how to enjoy a tour of the Dhofar Mountains and hills while remaining safe. The ROP said in the tweet, “While touring the mountains, follow the regulations for safety
during autumn and always drive carefully while negotiating the mountain because fog can lower your visibility.” Advice against swimming In addition to road safety, the ROP advises visitors against swimming in the sea. With many deaths reported because of drowning due to negligence, one must raise
awareness on this count. “The ROP keeps informed those venturing into the sea about the height of waves and rough conditions,” said the tweet. According to the latest statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, between June 21 and August 1, 238,675 people visited Salalah while Omanis comprised 67 per cent of total visitors. A total of 86 per cent of the trips were made by land whereas 14 per cent travelled by air. Furthermore, the NCSI also reported that 99 per cent of this year’s visitors to Salalah are from the GCC, including the Sultanate. Since most visitors arrived by land, it is safe to say that some could be speeding to cut the amount of time to reach their final destination. The ROP said in a tweet, “Did you know that speeding is the most common cause of deadly accidents? It’s better to arrive late to your destination than arrive on a stretcher.” “We strive for safety in order for you to enjoy your time in Salalah. Cooperate with us to keep you safe and secure,” said the tweet.
